A representative population of men (n=233) and women (n=321) from Goteborg, a city on the south western coast of Sweden.
One hour diet history interviews were performed and 35 specific foods and food groups were identified; in addition a diet quality index (DQI) was calculated. Differences in food choices and diet quality scores were tested across educational and socio-economic index categories (SEI).
Men with higher education and SEI had higher diet quality scores than those with lower socio-economic status, while no differences in DQI were noted in women. Further analysis of women based on their husband's occupational group also yielded no differences in diet quality. When studying individual foods, socio-economic differences were observed in women and men.
Selection of food varies by education and occupational status in both sexes although socio-economic disparities in diet quality were observed in men only.
Background. Clinical studies have shown that radiotherapy can induce vascular disease at the site of exposure but is usually not clinically evident until years after treatment. We have studied ...irradiated human arteries and veins to better understand the underlying biology in search of future treatments. The aim was to investigate whether radiotherapy contributed to a sustained expression of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) in human arteries and veins. Methods. Irradiated arteries and veins were harvested, together with unirradiated control vessels, from patients undergoing free tissue transfer reconstruction at a median time of 90 weeks 5–650 following radiation exposure. Differential gene expression of PAI-1 was analysed, together with immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF). Results. PAI-1 gene expression was increased in both arteries (p=0.012) and veins (p<0.001) in irradiated compared to unirradiated control vessels. IHC and IF indicated that cells expressing PAI-1 were located in the adventitia of both arteries and veins and colocalized with cells positive for CD68, CD45, and α-SMA in arteries and with CD45 and α-SMA in veins. Conclusion. The current study shows a sustained upregulation of PAI-1 in both arteries and veins after exposure to ionizing radiation, indicating a chronic inflammation mainly in the adventitia. We believe that the results contribute to further understanding of radiation-induced vascular disease, where targeting PAI-1 may be a potential treatment.

The Nordic School of Public Health (NHV) was jointly founded in 1953 by the Nordic countries. Until 1979, the school provided ad hoc courses on public health topics, using external teachers drawn ...mainly from the Nordic countries. At the time, the permanent staff of the school was small. In 1979, it began a Master's degree programme and a few academic positions were established and filled, to support these courses. The programme included four main areas: Epidemiology, Social Medicine, Environmental Health and Health Services Administration. Epidemiology was compulsory in all Master of Public Health (MPH) exams, but there were a handful of optional courses that could be substituted for the other subjects. This paper tells the story of Epidemiology at NHV from about 1980, up until closure of the school in 2014. The original MPH model ran until 1995. Nursing Science entered NHV from about 1985 and worked mainly with qualitative research that often focused on individual patients. The new methods attracted nurses, midwives, psychologists and other groups that previously had been less represented in NHV. Being quantitative and population oriented, Epidemiology lost its unique position as a mandatory subject for the MPH examination. In addition the 'New Public Health' proposed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that advocated health promotion and the philosophy of salutogenesis became a challenge for the programme in epidemiology: pathogenesis no longer was of primary interest. From 1995, the MPH format changed repeatedly and a DrPH programme was begun. For the last 8 years of its existence, NHV offered a reasonably comprehensive, basic course in Epidemiology. Throughout the years, epidemiology training and research at NHV were very traditional. In being a relatively free institution in terms of academic choices, NHV should have contributed to the development and innovation of epidemiology in public health. For several reasons, this did not happen.

Euperipatoides kanangrensis. We show that the development of the onychophoran brain is considerably different from arthropods. Neural precursors seem to be generated at random positions rather than in distinct spatio-temporal domains as has been shown in insects and chelicerates. The different mode of neural precursor formation is reflected in the homogenous expression of the proneural and neurogenic genes. Furthermore, the morphogenetic events that generate the three-dimensional structure of the onychophoran brain are significantly different from arthropods. Despite the different mode of neural precursor formation in insects and chelicerates (neuroblasts versus neural precursor groups), brain neurogenesis shares more similarities in these arthropods as compared to the onychophoran. Our data show that the developmental processes that generate the brain have considerably diverged in onychophorans and arthropods.

To determine the frequency of cardiomyopathy in children with mitochondrial disease and describe their clinical course, prognosis and cardiological manifestations.
Of 301 children with CNS and ...neuromuscular disease referred to our institution in 1984 to 1999, 101 had mitochondrial disease. Seventeen patients had cardiomyopathy, diagnosed by echo-Doppler investigations, all of the hypertrophic, non-obstructive type. The onset of symptomatic mitochondrial disease ranged from birth to 10 years of age. Eight children had cytochrome-c oxidase deficiency, while the remaining nine had various defects. Cardiomyopathy was diagnosed from birth to 27 years. Left ventricular posterior wall and septal thickness were both increased: z-scores +4.6+/-2.6 and +4.3+/-1.6 (mean+/-SD), respectively. The left ventricular diastolic diameter z-score, +1.3+/-3.4, and fractional shortening, 24+/-13%, displayed marked variations. Nine patients developed heart failure. Eleven patients with cardiomyopathy died, including all eight with cytochrome-c oxidase deficiency, and one patient underwent a heart transplantation. Mortality in children with mitochondrial disease was higher in those with cardiomyopathy (71%) than those without (26%) (P<0.001).
In children with mitochondrial disease, cardiomyopathy was common (17%) and was associated with increased mortality. The prognosis for children with cytochrome-c oxidase deficiency and cardiomyopathy appeared to be particularly unfavorable.
The spectral sensitivity of adult male Cupiennius salei Keys, a nocturnal hunting spider, was studied in a behavioural test. As known from earlier behavioural tests, C. salei will walk towards a ...black target presented in front of a white background. In this study, a black target (size 42×70 cm) was presented in a white arena illuminated by monochromatic light in the range 365-695 nm using 19 monochromatic filters (half-width in the range 6-10 nm). In the first trial, the transmission of the optical filters was between 40% and 80%. In the second trial, the transmission was reduced to 5% using a neutral density filter. At the high intensity, the spiders showed a spectral sensitivity in the range 380-670 nm. In the second trial, the animals only showed directed walks if the illumination was in the range 449-599 nm, indicating a lower sensitivity at the margins of the spectral sensitivity. In previous intracellular recordings, the measured spectral sensitivity was between 320 and 620 nm. Interestingly, these results do not completely match the behaviourally tested spectral sensitivity of the photoreceptors, where the sensitivity range is shifted to longer wavelengths. In order to investigate the molecular background of spectral sensitivity, we searched for opsin genes in C. salei. We found three visual opsins that correspond to UV and middle to long wavelength sensitive opsins as described for jumping spiders.
The arthropod head problem has puzzled zoologists for more than a century. The head of adult arthropods is a complex structure resulting from the modification, fusion and migration of an uncertain ...number of segments. In contrast, onychophorans, which are the probable sister group to the arthropods, have a rather simple head comprising three segments that are well defined during development, and give rise to the adult head with three pairs of appendages specialised for sensory and food capture/manipulative purposes. Based on the expression pattern of the anterior Hox genes labial, proboscipedia, Hox3 and Deformed, we show that the third of these onychophoran segments, bearing the slime papillae, can be correlated to the tritocerebrum, the most anterior Hox-expressing arthropod segment. This implies that both the onychophoran antennae and jaws are derived from a more anterior, Hox-free region corresponding to the proto and deutocerebrum of arthropods. Our data provide molecular support for the proposal that the onychophoran head possesses a well-developed appendage that corresponds to the anterior, apparently appendage-less region of the arthropod head.

We present here a description of early development in the onychophoran Euperipatoides kanangrensis with emphasis on processes that are ambiguously described in older literature. Special focus has ...been on the pattern of early cleavage, blastoderm and germinal disc development and gastrulation. The formation of the blastopore, stomodeum and proctodeum is described from sectioned material using light and transmission electron microscopy as well as whole-mount material stained for nuclei and gene expression. The early cleavages were found to be superficial, contrary to earlier descriptions of cleavage in yolky, ovoviviparous onychophorans. Also, contrary to earlier descriptions, the embryonic anterior-posterior axis is not predetermined in the egg. Our data support the view of a blastopore that becomes elongated and slit-like, resembling some of the earliest descriptions. From gene expression data, we concluded that the position of the proctodeum is the most posterior pit in the developing embryo. This description of early development adds to our knowledge of the staging of embryonic development in onychophorans necessary for studies on the role of developmental changes in evolution.
► Cleavages are superficial and appear identical to that described in the South-African yolk-less ovoviviparous species. ► The initial positioning of the anterior to posterior axis is not fixed in the egg. ► We propose the terms anterior and posterior part of the blastopore to replace older terms. ► The expression of the gene wingless shows the position of the proctodeum. ► This study has clarified the processes that occur in stage 1 of embryonic development in onychophorans.
