Among the many reasons a signal may deviate from perfect periodicity, quantum-limited jitter is arguably the most fundamental. A clever experiment has now stripped away technical noise to unveil ...quantum-limited jitter of ultrafast soliton frequency combs.

Abstract
Dissipative solitons are self-localized structures that can persist indefinitely in open systems driven out of equilibrium. They play a key role in photonics, underpinning technologies from ...mode-locked lasers to microresonator optical frequency combs. Here we report on experimental observations of spontaneous symmetry breaking of dissipative optical solitons. Our experiments are performed in a nonlinear optical ring resonator, where dissipative solitons arise in the form of persisting pulses of light known as Kerr cavity solitons. We engineer symmetry between two orthogonal polarization modes of the resonator and show that the solitons of the system can spontaneously break this symmetry, giving rise to two distinct but co-existing vectorial solitons with mirror-like, asymmetric polarization states. We also show that judiciously applied perturbations allow for deterministic switching between the two symmetry-broken dissipative soliton states. Our work delivers fundamental insights at the intersection of multi-mode nonlinear optical resonators, dissipative structures, and spontaneous symmetry breaking, and expands upon our understanding of dissipative solitons in coherently driven Kerr resonators.
Coherent continuous wave (CW) terahertz spectroscopy is an extremely valuable technique that allows for the interrogation of systems that exhibit narrow resonances in the terahertz (THz) frequency ...range, such as high-quality (high-Q) THz whispering-gallery mode resonators. Unfortunately, common implementations are impaired by deficiencies in the used data analysis schemes. Here, we show that these deficiencies can be conveniently overcome using the Hilbert transform, and we unveil the theoretical foundations of the method. In particular, by establishing that signals encountered in typical experiments are closely related to analytic signals, we demonstrate that Hilbert transform is applicable even when the envelope varies rapidly compared to the oscillation period. Compelling results from experimental measurements and numerical simulations confirm the broad applicability of the described method.

Parametric nonlinear optical processes allow for the generation of new wavelengths of coherent electromagnetic radiation. Their ability to create radiation that is widely tunable in wavelength is ...particularly appealing, with applications ranging from spectroscopy to quantum information processing. Unfortunately, existing tunable parametric sources are marred by deficiencies that obstruct their widespread adoption. Here, we show that ultrahigh-Q crystalline microresonators made of magnesium fluoride can overcome these limitations, enabling compact and power-efficient devices capable of generating clean and widely tunable sidebands. We consider several different resonators with carefully engineered dispersion profiles, achieving hundreds of nanometres of sideband tunability in each device. In addition to direct observations of discrete tunability over an optical octave from 1,083 nm to 2,670 nm, we record signatures of mid-infrared sidebands at almost 4,000 nm. The simplicity of the demonstrated devices—compounded by their remarkable tunability—paves the way for low-cost, widely tunable sources of electromagnetic radiation.
Dissipative Kerr cavity solitons are pulses of light that can persist in coherently driven nonlinear optical resonators. They have attracted significant attention over the past decade due to their ...rich nonlinear dynamics and key role in the generation of coherent microresonator optical frequency combs. Whilst the vast majority of implementations have relied on homogeneous continuous wave driving, the soliton's 'plasticity' combined with inhomogeneous driving offers attractive advantages for a host of applications. Here we review recent studies into the dynamics and applications of Kerr cavity solitons in the presence of inhomogeneous driving fields. In particular, we summarise the salient theoretical developments that allow for the analysis of cavity soliton motion in the presence of pump phase or amplitude inhomogeneities, and survey relevant experiments across macroscopic fibre ring resonators, monolithic microresonators, and free-space Kerr enhancement cavities.
