Abstract
The journal collection ‘Focus on Physics Competitions’ of the
European Journal of Physics
(EJP) is an ongoing collection within the
European Journal Physics
(EJP). In the year 2020, five ...articles have been submitted within this series. This editorial will briefly sum up the content and ideas of those articles. In addition, the concept of this collection is explained in order to ensure the objectives of this collection are clear and evident for future submissions.
The International Physicists' Tournament (IPT) 2019 dealt with 17 challenging problems. In this article, we present experimental as well as theoretical approaches as examples of one of these tasks. A ...ball placed on a hard and flat surface can oscillate when being hit by a jet of water from above. To explain the oscillations, a theoretical model is introduced and its predictions are compared to experimental measurements. Furthermore, the structure of the IPT itself is characterized briefly in this article, as well as the idea of a new and innovative seminar, which was set up at Erlangen University to prepare and assist students in taking part in the IPT. Furthermore, the educational relevance of physics tournaments such as IPT for physics education at university is discussed in detail.
A scintillating fibre detector with high spatial granularity was built for the Crystal Barrel experiment at ELSA (CB-ELSA) in Bonn. It consists of 513 scintillating fibres with 2
mm in diameter, ...arranged in three layers with cylindrical geometry inside the Crystal Barrel detector surrounding the target cell. Two layers are wound in opposite directions, the third is parallel to the incident beam direction, resulting in an unambiguous hit reconstruction and a position resolution better than 1.6
mm for charged particles. The read-out is done with 16-channel multi-anode photomultipliers. The detector was designed to cover the full angular acceptance of the Crystal Barrel detector with an angular range of

Properties of the Roper resonance, the first scalar excitation of the nucleon, are determined. Pole positions and residues of the P11 partial wave are studied in a combined analysis of pion- and ...photo-induced reactions. We find the Roper pole at {(1371±7)−i(92±10)} MeV and an elasticity of 0.61±0.03. The largest decay coupling is found for the Nσ (σ=(ππ)-S-wave). The analysis is based on new data on γp→pπ0π0 for photons in the energy range from the two-pion threshold to 820 MeV from TAPS at Mainz and from 0.4 to 1.3 GeV from Crystal Barrel at Bonn and includes further data from other experiments. The partial wave analysis excludes the possibility that the Roper resonance is split into two states with different partial decay widths.

The International Physicists' Tournament (IPT) 2019 dealt with 17 challenging problems. In this article, we present experimental as well as theoretical approaches exemplarily to one of these tasks. A ...ball placed on a hard and at surface can show oscillation movement when being hit by a jet of water from above. To explain the oscillations, a theoretical model is introduced and its predictions are compared to the experimental measurements. Furthermore, the structure of the IPT itself is characterized shortly in this article, as well as the idea of a new and innovative seminar which was set up at Erlangen University to prepare and assist students in taking part in International Physicists' Tournament. Furthermore, the educational relevance of physics tournaments like IPT for physics education at university is discussed in detail.
Evidence is reported for the existence of a parity doublet of Delta resonances with total angular momentum J=3/2 from photoproduction of the ppi;{0}eta final state. The two parity partners ...Delta(1920)P33 and Delta(1940)D33 make significant contributions to the reaction. Cascades of resonances into Delta(1232)eta, N(1535)pi, and Na0(980) are clearly observed.
