7Be electron capture neutrinos, via neutrino–electron scattering in an ultra-pure liquid scintillator. This paper is mostly devoted to the description of the detector structure, the photomultipliers, the electronics, and the trigger and calibration systems. The real performance of the detector, which always meets, and sometimes exceeds, design expectations, is also shown. Some important aspects of the Borexino project, i.e. the fluid handling plants, the purification techniques and the filling procedures, are not covered in this paper and are, or will be, published elsewhere (see Introduction and Bibliography).

The old silicon vertex detector (SVD1) of the Belle detector, operating at the high-luminosity asymmetric energy e+e− collider KEKB, was replaced by an upgraded version (SVD2) in 2003. The new ...detector has modified geometry and redesigned readout electronics, providing a larger polar angle acceptance, better vertex resolution, improved radiation hardness and reduced dead time. The operation of the detector started successfully in October 2003. The basic concepts of the SVD2 design as well as its performance after 10 months of data taking are described in this paper.

neutrinos emitted in the pp cycle of the sun. Neutrinos will be detected by their elastic scattering on electrons in 100
...ton of liquid scintillator. The neutrino event rate in the scintillator is expected to be low (
∼
0.35
events per day per ton), and the signals will be at energies below 1.5
MeV, where background from natural radioactivity is prominent. Scintillation light produced by the recoil electrons is observed by an array of 2240 photomultiplier tubes. Because of the intrinsic radioactive contaminants in these PMTs, the liquid scintillator is shielded from them by a thick barrier of buffer fluid. A spherical vessel made of thin nylon film contains the scintillator, separating it from the surrounding buffer. The buffer region itself is divided into two concentric shells by a second nylon vessel in order to prevent inward diffusion of radon atoms. The radioactive background requirements for Borexino are challenging to meet, especially for the scintillator and these nylon vessels. Besides meeting requirements for low radioactivity, the nylon vessels must also satisfy requirements for mechanical, optical, and chemical properties. The present paper describes the research and development, construction, and installation of the nylon vessels for the Borexino experiment.

We report on the study of a new liquid scintillator target for neutrino interactions in the framework of the research and development program of the Borexino solar neutrino experiment. The ...scintillator consists of 1,2-dimethyl-4-(1-phenylethyl)-benzene (phenyl-o-xylylethane, PXE) as solvent and 1,4-diphenylbenzene (para-Terphenyl, p-Tp) as primary and 1,4-bis(2-methylstyryl)benzene (bis-MSB) as secondary solute. The density close to that of water and the high flash point makes it an attractive option for large scintillation detectors in general. The study focused on optical properties, radioactive trace impurities and novel purification techniques of the scintillator. Attenuation lengths of the scintillator mixture of 12

nm were achieved after purification with an alumina column. A radiocarbon isotopic ratio of

Polarization measurements in the X-ray and gamma-ray energy range can provide crucial information on massive compact objects such as black holes and neutron stars. The Polarized Gamma-ray Observer ...(PoGO) is a new balloon-borne instrument designed to measure polarization from astrophysical objects in the 30–100
keV range, under development by an international collaboration with members from United States, Japan, Sweden and France. To examine PoGO's capability, a beam test of a simplified prototype detector array was conducted at the Argonne National Laboratory Advanced Photon Source. The detector array consisted of seven plastic scintillators, and was irradiated by polarized photon beams at 60, 73 and 83
keV. The data showed a clear polarization signal, with a measured modulation factor of
0.42
±
0.01
. This was successfully reproduced at the 10% level by the computer simulation package Geant4 after modifications to its implementation of polarized Compton/Rayleigh scattering. Details of the beam test and the validation of the Geant4 simulations are presented.

We report the direct measurement of the {sup 7}Be solar neutrino signal rate performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The interaction rate of the 0.862 MeV ...{sup 7}Be neutrinos is 49{+-}3{sub stat}{+-}4{sub syst} counts/(day{center_dot}100 ton). The hypothesis of no oscillation for {sup 7}Be solar neutrinos is inconsistent with our measurement at the 4{sigma} C.L. Our result is the first direct measurement of the survival probability for solar {nu}{sub e} in the transition region between matter-enhanced and vacuum-driven oscillations. The measurement improves the experimental determination of the flux of {sup 7}Be, pp, and CNO solar {nu}{sub e}, and the limit on the effective neutrino magnetic moment using solar neutrinos.

Atlas-type models are constant-parameter models of uncorrelated stocks for equity markets with a stable capital distribution, in which the growth rates and variances depend on rank. The simplest such ...model assigns the same, constant variance to all stocks; zero rate of growth to all stocks but the smallest; and positive growth rate to the smallest, the Atlas stock. In this paper we study the basic properties of this class of models, as well as the behavior of various portfolios in their midst. Of particular interest are portfolios that do not contain the Atlas stock.

The successful deployment of the Borexino solar neutrino detector required assorted physical and chemical operations to produce exceptional pure fluids and fill multiple detector zones. The ...composition and flow rates of high purity gases and liquids had to be precisely controlled to maintain liquid levels and pressures. The system was required to meet exceptional requirements for cleanliness and leak-tightness. A large scale modular system connecting fluid receiving, purification and fluid delivery processes was developed for Borexino. At the core is a flow control system that delivers scintillator components to plants for purification, and then fills the Borexino detector volumes with ultrahigh purity buffer or ultrahigh purity scintillator. The liquid handling system maintains precise control over the liquid levels and differential pressures between the different volumes of the detectors that are separated by flexible nylon vessels. The preparation, commissioning and operation of the system for filling the Borexino detector with scintillator is described.

An equity market is called "diverse" if no single stock is ever allowed to dominate the entire market in terms of relative capitalization. In the context of the standard Ito-process model initiated ...by Samuelson (1965) we formulate this property (and the allied, successively weaker notions of "weak diversity" and "asymptotic weak diversity") in precise terms. We show that diversity is possible to achieve, but delicate. Several examples are provided which illustrate these notions and show that weakly-diverse markets contain relative arbitrage opportunities: it is possible to outperform or underperform such markets over any given time-horizon. The existence of this type of relative arbitrage does not interfere with the development of contingent claim valuation, and has consequences for the pricing of long-term warrants and for put-call parity.
