A method for direct and continuous detection of ion motion during different perturbation events of the fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) experiment is demonstrated. The modifications ...necessary to convert an ordinary FTICR cell into one capable of performing simultaneous excitation/detection (SED) using a capacitive network are outlined. With these modifications, a 200-fold reduction in the detection of the coupled excitation signal is achieved. This allows the unique ability not only to observe the response to the perturbation but to observe the perturbation event itself. SED is used successfully to monitor the ion cyclotron transient during single-frequency excitation, remeasurement and excite−τ−excite experiments.

In this study we examined the structural chromosomal aberrations (CA) and sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) of 12 nurses handling moderate quantities of antineoplastic drugs. Urinary thioethers were ...also measured to assess the potential exposure to alkylating drugs. Two control groups with similar mean age and smoking habits and working in the same hospital were also studied: 1) control clerks and 2) control nurses. Our study did not show any clear increase of chromosomal damage in exposed nurses as compared to controls. However, CA in control nurses were significantly increased (p = 0.05) with respect to control clerks. The results of baseline urinary excretion of thioethers were statistically higher (p less than 0.02) in exposed subjects than in control clerks.
This chapter treats several approaches for employing nanophotonics or near-nanophotonics concepts to create low-power switches. The partly interrelated issues of low power dissipation and small ...device footprint are elucidated and figures of merit for switches formulated. Both optically and electronically controlled optical switches are treated and the crucial role of material development emphasized, illustrated by several examples, including both theoretical analysis of switch concepts and experimentally realized switches. Thus, electronically controlled switches based on hybrid, metamaterial and nanoparticle plasmonics, electrooptic polymers as well as switches based on silicon and photonic crystals are discussed. The all-optical switches focus on third-order nonlinear effects and carrier-induced refractive-index changes in III-V materials, as well as on emerging concepts of near-field-coupled quantum-dot switches. A brief comparison to electronic switches is done.
Five patients (3 females; 2 males) who underwent gastrectomy for carcinoma were administered adjuvant chemotherapy and high dose medroxyprogesterone acetate (HD-MPA) as supportive therapy. MPA ...administered p.o. was regularly absorbed; the drug was well tolerated and was almost lacking in toxicity. MPA, thanks to its myeloprotective activity and its anabolic effects, can be used as supportive therapy in the treatment of a wide range of malignancies.
From December 1971 to December 1976 224 patients with Hodgkin's disease underwent diagnostic laparotomy and splenectomy under a multidisciplinary protocol of treatment. In 149/224 (66.5%) the ...clinical stage of the disease was confirmed, whereas in 75/224 (33.5%) it was modified after surgery. In 7.6% of the patients (17/224) there were postoperative complications. One patient died of myocardial infarction. The rate of complications in the last 100 cases was 5%. Preoperative patient selection, excluding those definitely in stage IV, is of relevance, and it can be done by iliac crest biopsy and laparoscopy. Although a better exploitation of some diagnostic procedures (lymphangiography, laparoscopy) and the expanding use of chemotherapy may reduce in the future the need for staging laparotomy and splenectomy, diagnostic laparotomy is still indicated for the selection and preparation of patients for radiation therapy in stages I, II and III.
A special stereotaxic device is described which was conceived and built to integrate the peculiar orthogonal approach of the well known Talairach apparatus with a polar approach. The device is useful ...to reach small and deep-seated brain targets, particularly those located on or close to the midline. Its use in several different stereotaxic operations, such as thalamotomy, brain-tumor biopsy, or radiotherapy, proved its flexibility, safety, and reliability.
