The effects of supplementing canthaxanthin on productive and reproductive aspects of broiler breeders were examined in this study. In total, 360 female pullets and 36 roosters were placed in an ...open-sided house with 12 pens, each pen with an area of 7.0 m2 (3.5 x 2.0 m). At 42 wk of age, the breeder hens and roosters were distributed into 2 experimental groups with similar BW and uniformity. From 46 to 66 wk of age, one group received 6 mg/kg of canthaxanthin supplemented in the diet and the other group received the diet without the addition of canthaxanthin (control diet). Body weight was measured every 28 d, the laying rate was calculated weekly, and mortality was evaluated at the end of the study. Twenty-one weekly incubations were performed to evaluate fertility and incubation responses. To evaluate the antioxidant effect of canthaxanthin at different storage times and during the incubation process, eggs from each treatment were subject to thiobarbituric reactive substances analysis. Body weight, mortality, and laying rate were not affected by the inclusion of canthaxanthin in the breeder’s diets. An increase in hatchability of total and fertile eggs (P ≤ 0.0001 and P ≤ 0.0003, respectively) in breeders fed canthaxanthin during the experimental period was observed. Canthaxanthin also improved breeder fertility and reduced embryo mortality. This can be attributed to reductions in embryo mortality in the first 48 h of incubation and in the last wk of incubation. No differences were observed in BW and quality of the chicks. A reduction of thiobarbituric reactive substances was observed in yolks from stored hatching eggs produced by breeders fed diets plus canthaxanthin. The same effect was observed in yolks of eggs stored for 4 d and incubated for 7 d. The supplementation of broiler breeder diets with canthaxanthin improved the hatchability rate, fertility, and reduced the presence of thiobarbituric reactive substances in eggs.

Foi utilizado um delineamento completamente ao acaso com cinco níveis de tratamentos para OAS (0, 25, 50, 75 e 100%), com oito repetições de duas aves cada, como substituto ao óleo de soja refinado (OS) incluído até um nível máximo de 8% na formulação da dieta. O índice de acidez e os coeficientes K232 e K270 mostraram um efeito linear crescente (P<0,001) com o aumento dos níveis de inclusão de OAS na formulação das dietas. Os coeficientes K232 e K270 não foram alterados com o armazenamento das rações durante 7 dias. A suplementação com OAS durante 56 dias não afetou o desempenho produtivo das codornas. Os resultados não mostraram efeitos do OAS sobre a metabolizabilidade de ingredientes, exceto para gordura bruta que exibiu um efeito quadrático decrescente até o nível de 50% de substituição do óleo de soja por OAS (y= 94,31-1,186x+0,018x2, R2= 0,28, P= 0,02). ABSTRACT This study evaluated the effects of soybean acid oil (OAS) on oxidation products specific extinctions coefficients (K232 and K270) and metabolizability of diets and productive performance in quails. A total of 80 dual-purpose quails were used in a 56-days experiment. A completely randomised design with five treatment levels of OAS (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) as a dietary replacer for soybean oil (OS) included up to 8% in the diet formulation were used, with eight replicates of two birds each. The acidity index and K232 and K270 coefficients showed a crescent linear effect (P<0.001), with increasing levels of OAS in the diet formulation. There were no changes in K232 and K270 values during 7-days of diet storage. Supplementation with OAS during 56 days has no effect on quail’s productive performance. The results showed no effects of OAS on metabolizability of ingredients except for crude fat that exhibited a quadratic effect that was decrescent to the level of 50% of OAS supplementation as soybean oil replacer (y= 94.31-1.186x+0.018x2, R2= 0.28, P= 0.02). In conclusion, dietary inclusion of OAS up to 8% in the diet during a short period of time (56-days) produce no adverse effects on productive performance of quails.
To evaluate lung and liver changes in two experimental models using intraperitoneal carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and bile duct ligation (BDL). methods: Twenty-four male Wistar rats were divided into a ...control group (CO) and an experimental group (EX). We evaluated the liver transaminases (AST, ALT, AP), arterial blood gases (PaO2, PCO2 and SpO2) and lipid peroxidation by TBARS (substances that react to thiobarbituric acid) and chemiluminescence. We also evaluated the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and histology of lung tissue and liver.
There were significant differences in AST, ALT, ALP and PaO2 between CO group and EX group (P<0.05). The levels of TBARS, chemiluminescence and activity of enzyme superoxide dismutase were increased to different degrees in the CCl4 groups: CO and in the BDL -EX (P<0.05, respectively). In the lung histology, an increase in the wall thickness of the pulmonary artery and a diameter reduction in the CCl4 animal model were observed: comparing CO group with EX group, we observed a reduction in thickness and an increase in the diameter of the artery wall lung.
Both experimental models have caused liver damage and alterations in the artery wall that are associated with major changes in pulmonary gas exchange.
Members of the bacterial family Flavobacteriaceae are widely distributed in the marine environment and often found associated with algae, fish, detritus or marine invertebrates. Yet, little is known ...about the characteristics that drive their ubiquity in diverse ecological niches. Here, we provide an overview of functional traits common to taxonomically diverse members of the family Flavobacteriaceae from different environmental sources, with a focus on the Marine clade. We include seven newly sequenced marine sponge-derived strains that were also tested for gliding motility and antimicrobial activity.
Comparative genomics revealed that genome similarities appeared to be correlated to 16S rRNA gene- and genome-based phylogeny, while differences were mostly associated with nutrient acquisition, such as carbohydrate metabolism and gliding motility. The high frequency and diversity of genes encoding polymer-degrading enzymes, often arranged in polysaccharide utilization loci (PULs), support the capacity of marine Flavobacteriaceae to utilize diverse carbon sources. Homologs of gliding proteins were widespread among all studied Flavobacteriaceae in contrast to members of other phyla, highlighting the particular presence of this feature within the Bacteroidetes. Notably, not all bacteria predicted to glide formed spreading colonies. Genome mining uncovered a diverse secondary metabolite biosynthesis arsenal of Flavobacteriaceae with high prevalence of gene clusters encoding pathways for the production of antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxic compounds. Antimicrobial activity tests showed, however, that the phenotype differed from the genome-derived predictions for the seven tested strains.
Our study elucidates the functional repertoire of marine Flavobacteriaceae and highlights the need to combine genomic and experimental data while using the appropriate stimuli to unlock their uncharted metabolic potential.

Early mobilization is beneficial for critically ill patients because it reduces muscle weakness acquired in intensive care units. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of functional ...electrical stimulation (FES) and passive cycle ergometry (PCE) on the nitrous stress and inflammatory cytometry in critically ill patients. This was a controlled, randomized, open clinical trial carried out in a 16-bed intensive care unit. The patients were randomized into four groups: Control group (n=10), did not undergo any therapeutic intervention during the study; PCE group (n=9), lower-limb PCE for 30 cycles/min for 20 min; FES group (n=9), electrical stimulation of quadriceps muscle for 20 min; and FES with PCE group (n=7), patients underwent PCE and FES, with their order determined randomly. The serum levels of nitric oxide, tumor necrosis factor alpha, interferon gamma, and interleukins 6 and 10 were analyzed before and after the intervention. There were no differences in clinical or demographic characteristics between the groups. The results revealed reduced nitric oxide concentrations one hour after using PCE (P<0.001) and FES (P<0.05), thereby indicating that these therapies may reduce cellular nitrosative stress when applied separately. Tumor necrosis factor alpha levels were reduced after the PCE intervention (P=0.049). PCE and FES reduced nitric oxide levels, demonstrating beneficial effects on the reduction of nitrosative stress. PCE was the only treatment that reduced the tumor necrosis factor alpha concentration.

What is known already
PCOS is one of the most common endocrinopathies in women. It has been reported to be associated with psychological distress and dissatisfaction with self-appearance due to clinical features of the syndrome, such as hyperandrogenism, metabolic disorders, obesity, and infertility, leading to lower self-esteem and an increased risk of developing ED. This association presents a clinical dilemma, as the primary treatment for PCOS emphasizes the importance of weight loss, leading to potential distress in patients and worsening ED behaviors.
Study design, size, duration
This was a cross-sectional study. The sample size was calculated with the formula for comparison of proportions in two independent groups, with a confidence level of 95% and power of 80%, obtaining a minimum sample size of 116 participants per group. We included a total of 643 women between July to August 2022.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
643 women who attended a gynecological consultation in Murcia, Spain were included, 238 with PCOS and 450 controls. The information was collected online. The score of the EDE-Q questionnaire and the clinical epidemiological characteristics were compared between the groups. Pearson Chi-square was used for categorical variables, and Mann Whitney U test for quantitative variables. Statistical significance was considered with a P-value <0.05. The data were analyzed with the SPSS version 20.
Main results and the role of chance
We found an increased risk of presenting ED in women with PCOS than in women not reporting PCOS (27% vs 13.7%). The odds of presenting an abnormal EDE-Q score (>4) were greater in women with PCOS (odds ratio OR 2.325, 95% confidence interval CI, 1.55, 3.47, P < 0.001) than in women without PCOS. Clinically significant elevated scores were observed in the PCOS group for all four subscales of ED, but with a more significant impact on the eating concern scale (OR 2.49, 95% CI, 1.47, 4.21, P < 0.001). We found more prevalence of binge episodes in the PCOS group (OR 1.8, 95% IC, 1.3, 2.5, P < 0.001). When evaluating the characteristic of women with diagnosis of PCOS, we observed a higher body mass index (30.4 vs 23.4 95% CI, 0.89-1.4, P < 0.001) and more prevalence of amenorrhea (100% vs 87%, P < 0.001) in women with ED diagnosis than in women without ED.
Limitations, reasons for caution
The limitations observed in our study were that the information was based on an online questionnaire, so there is a possible reporting bias or misunderstanding of the questions.
Wider implications of the findings
The present study shows that women with diagnosis of PCOS have an increased risk of presenting ED than women without PCOS. This is more prevalent in women with a longer period of amenorrhea and a higher body mass index.
