Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is a common neurological disorder caused by mutations in the gene encoding Neurofibromin, a p21Ras GTPase Activating Protein (GAP)
1. Importantly, NF1 causes learning ...disabilities and attention deficits
2, 3. A previous study showed that the learning and memory deficits of a mouse model of NF1 (
nf1
+/−
) appear to be caused by excessive p21Ras activity leading to impairments in long-term potentiation (LTP)
4, a cellular mechanism of learning and memory
5–7. Here, we identify lovastatin as a potent inhibitor of p21Ras/Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) activity
8, 9 in the brain. Lovastatin is a specific inhibitor of three-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, used commonly for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia
10. We report that lovastatin decreased the enhanced brain p21Ras-MAPK activity of the
nf1
+/−
mice, rescued their LTP deficits, and reversed their spatial learning and attention impairments. Therefore, these results demonstrate that lovastatin may prove useful in the treatment of Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Nuclear stopping has been investigated in central nuclear collisions at intermediate energies by analyzing kinematically complete events recorded with the help of the 4π multidetector INDRA for a ...large variety of symmetric systems. It is found that the mean isotropy ratio defined as the ratio of transverse to parallel momenta (energies) reaches a minimum near the Fermi energy, saturates or slowly increases depending on the mass of the system as the beam energy increases, and then stays lower than unity, showing that significant stopping is not achieved even for the heavier systems. Close to and above the Fermi energy, experimental data show no effect of the isospin content of the interacting system. A comparison with transport model calculations reveals that the latter overestimates the stopping power at low energies.

Equilibrium constants for hydrogen and helium isotopes as a function of density and temperature are measured in the framework of the study made by Qin et al 2012 Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 172701. We ...review and comment on all stages of the analysis and conclude that our measurements are not inconsistent with the results of Qin et al. Improvements are being made to the initial analysis and we raise the issue of the binding energies which has to be clarified.
We report on first experimental observations of nuclear fermionic and bosonic components displaying different behaviours in the decay of hot Ca projectile-like sources produced in mid-peripheral ...collisions at sub-Fermi energies. The experimental setup, constituted by the coupling of the INDRA 4π detector array to the forward angle VAMOS magnetic spectrometer, allowed to reconstruct the mass, charge and excitation energy of the decaying hot projectile-like sources. By means of quantum-fluctuation analysis techniques, temperatures and local partial densities of bosons and fermions could be correlated to the excitation energy of the reconstructed system. The results are consistent with the production of dilute mixed systems of bosons and fermions, where bosons experience higher phase-space and energy density as compared to the surrounding fermionic gas. Our findings recall phenomena observed in the study of Bose condensates and Fermi gases in atomic traps despite the different scales.

Over the past decade, inverse kinematics has been increasingly employed in experimental studies of fission. This approach has yielded a wealth of new observables that can be obtained in single ...measurements, enabling their analysis and correlations. One ongoing application of this technique involves a series of experiments performed at GANIL using the variable-mode, large-acceptance VAMOS++ spectrometer. A recent experiment focused on examining the survival of nuclear structure effects at high excitation energy in both fission and quasi-fission. The results of the study involved a full isotopic identification of fragments, as well as an analysis of the elemental yields their relation to fission dynamics. The results indicate that fission and quasi-fission involve different mechanisms, which could be exploited to distinguish between the two phenomena.

During the last decade, the use of inverse kinematics in the experimental study of fission is bringing a wealth of new observables obtained in single measurements, allowing their analysis and their ...correlations. An ongoing application of this technique is the basis of a series of experiments performed with the variable-mode, large-acceptance VAMOS++ spectrometer at GANIL. A recent experiment has been focused on the survival of the nuclear structure effects at high excitation energy in fission and quasi-fission. The full isotopic identification of fragments, the fission dynamics and the ratio between the production of fragments with even and odd atomic numbers, the so-called proton even-odd effect, are shown. The latter shows a different mechanism for fission and quasi-fission that could be used to separate fission from quasi-fission.
