The development of active, cost-effective and stable oxygen-evolving catalysts is one of the major challenges for solar-to-fuel conversion towards sustainable energy generation. Iridium oxide ...exhibits the best available compromise between catalytic activity and stability in acid media, but it is prohibitively expensive for large-scale applications. Therefore, preparing oxygen-evolving catalysts with lower amounts of the scarce but active and stable iridium is an attractive avenue to overcome this economical constraint. Here we report on a class of oxygen-evolving catalysts based on iridium double perovskites which contain 32 wt% less iridium than IrO2 and yet exhibit a more than threefold higher activity in acid media. According to recently suggested benchmarking criteria, the iridium double perovskites are the most active catalysts for oxygen evolution in acid media reported until now, to the best of our knowledge, and exhibit similar stability to IrO2.
Abstract Background The current standard treatment for locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) was conventional–fractionation radiotherapy plus concurrent–adjuvant chemotherapy as ...recommended by the Intergroup-0099 Study. This combined analysis of the NPC-9901 and the NPC-9902 Trials aims to provide more comprehensive data to evaluate the efficacy of the Intergroup-0099 regimen and the contributing factors. Methods Eligible patients with stage III-IVB non-keratinizing NPC were randomly assigned to radiotherapy-alone (RTi group: 218 patients) or chemoradiotherapy (CRTi group: 223 patients) using cisplatin (100 mg/m2 ) for three cycles in concurrence with radiotherapy, followed by cisplatin (80 mg/m2 ) plus fluorouracil (1000 mg/m2 /day for 4 days) for three cycles. The median follow-up was 6.1 years. Findings Comparison by intention-to-treat showed that the CRTi group achieved significant improvement in overall failure-free rate (FFR), locoregional-FFR and cancer-specific survival ( p ⩽ 0.019); but the improvements for distant-FFR and overall survival (OS) were statistically insignificant ( p ⩾ 0.14). Further exploratory studies based on actual treatment showed that an additional improvement achieved was a significant gain in OS (CRTa versus RTa group: 72% versus 63% at 5-year, p = 0.037). Multivariate analyses showed that the dose of cisplatin during the concurrent phase had significant impact on locoregional-FFR and OS, while that of fluorouracil during the adjuvant phase was significant for distant-FFR. The 5-year locoregional-FFR for patients who received 0–1, 2 and 3 concurrent cycles were 79%, 88% and 88%, respectively; the corresponding distant-FFR by adjuvant cycles were 68%, 78% and 77%, respectively. Interpretation Our results support the current practice of adding concurrent cisplatin plus adjuvant cisplatin-fluorouracil to radiotherapy for treating patients with locoregionally advanced NPC. The concurrent phase is important for locoregional control and survival, cisplatin 200 mg/m2 in two concurrent cycles might be adequate. Additional chemotherapy using fluorouracil-containing combination contributed to improving distant control.

We assessed current status of multi-model ensemble (MME) deterministic and probabilistic seasonal prediction based on 25-year (1980-2004) retrospective forecasts performed by 14 climate model systems ...(7 one-tier and 7 two-tier systems) that participate in the Climate Prediction and its Application to Society (CliPAS) project sponsored by the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation Climate Center (APCC). We also evaluated seven DEMETER models' MME for the period of 1981-2001 for comparison. Based on the assessment, future direction for improvement of seasonal prediction is discussed. We found that two measures of probabilistic forecast skill, the Brier Skill Score (BSS) and Area under the Relative Operating Characteristic curve (AROC), display similar spatial patterns as those represented by temporal correlation coefficient (TCC) score of deterministic MME forecast. A TCC score of 0.6 corresponds approximately to a BSS of 0.1 and an AROC of 0.7 and beyond these critical threshold values, they are almost linearly correlated. The MME method is demonstrated to be a valuable approach for reducing errors and quantifying forecast uncertainty due to model formulation. The MME prediction skill is substantially better than the averaged skill of all individual models. For instance, the TCC score of CliPAS one-tier MME forecast of Niño 3.4 index at a 6-month lead initiated from 1 May is 0.77, which is significantly higher than the corresponding averaged skill of seven individual coupled models (0.63). The MME made by using 14 coupled models from both DEMETER and CliPAS shows an even higher TCC score of 0.87. Effectiveness of MME depends on the averaged skill of individual models and their mutual independency. For probabilistic forecast the CliPAS MME gains considerable skill from increased forecast reliability as the number of model being used increases; the forecast resolution also increases for 2 m temperature but slightly decreases for precipitation. Equatorial Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies are primary sources of atmospheric climate variability worldwide. The MME 1-month lead hindcast can predict, with high fidelity, the spatial-temporal structures of the first two leading empirical orthogonal modes of the equatorial SST anomalies for both boreal summer (JJA) and winter (DJF), which account for about 80-90% of the total variance. The major bias is a westward shift of SST anomaly between the dateline and 120°E, which may potentially degrade global teleconnection associated with it. The TCC score for SST predictions over the equatorial eastern Indian Ocean reaches about 0.68 with a 6-month lead forecast. However, the TCC score for Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) index drops below 0.40 at a 3-month lead for both the May and November initial conditions due to the prediction barriers across July, and January, respectively. The MME prediction skills are well correlated with the amplitude of Niño 3.4 SST variation. The forecasts for 2 m air temperature are better in El Niño years than in La Niña years. The precipitation and circulation are predicted better in ENSO-decaying JJA than in ENSO-developing JJA. There is virtually no skill in ENSO-neutral years. Continuing improvement of the one-tier climate model's slow coupled dynamics in reproducing realistic amplitude, spatial patterns, and temporal evolution of ENSO cycle is a key for long-lead seasonal forecast. Forecast of monsoon precipitation remains a major challenge. The seasonal rainfall predictions over land and during local summer have little skill, especially over tropical Africa. The differences in forecast skills over land areas between the CliPAS and DEMETER MMEs indicate potentials for further improvement of prediction over land. There is an urgent need to assess impacts of land surface initialization on the skill of seasonal and monthly forecast using a multi-model framework.

For metal matrix composites (MMCs), introduction of low-dimensional nano-carbon materials (NCMs) into three dimensional metallic matrix is commonly applied to enhance mechanical and physical ...properties of metals and thus significantly extend their wide range applications. However, the interfaces between the NCMs and metal matrix are always a major issue for achieving the best enhancement effects. In this paper, we investigated interfacial structures of graphene nanoplates (GNPs) reinforced Cu matrix composites fabricated using a simple and industrially scalable strategy, through integration of interface engineering design methodology and a spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. We then systematically evaluated their physico-mechanical properties, interfacial characteristics and strengthening mechanisms. The in-situ formed WxCy nano-layers and carbide nanoparticles on the surfaces of GNPs and near the interfaces of Cu grains promote strong interfacial bonding and improves the cohesive strength of Cu based nanocomposites. The GNPs-W/Cu composites show a good balance between strength and electrical conductivity. Their 0.2% yield strength and ultimate tensile strength have been improved up to 239.13% (112.73%) and 197.76% (72.51%), respectively, when compared with those of pure copper (or GNPs/Cu composites). Electrical conductivity of GNPs-W/Cu composites shows no apparent changes after the addition of the GNPs. The dislocation strengthening, refinement strengthening and load transfer strengthening were achieved simultaneously through the engineered interfaces in GNPs-W/Cu matrix composites. This work has provided a new strategy to fabricate high-performance NCMs enhanced MMCs by using the interface engineering methodology.

In this synthesis, we assess present research and anticipate future development needs in modeling water quality in watersheds. We first discuss areas of potential improvement in the representation of ...freshwater systems pertaining to water quality, including representation of environmental interfaces, in‐stream water quality and process interactions, soil health and land management, and (peri‐)urban areas. In addition, we provide insights into the contemporary challenges in the practices of watershed water quality modeling, including quality control of monitoring data, model parameterization and calibration, uncertainty management, scale mismatches, and provisioning of modeling tools. Finally, we make three recommendations to provide a path forward for improving watershed water quality modeling science, infrastructure, and practices. These include building stronger collaborations between experimentalists and modelers, bridging gaps between modelers and stakeholders, and cultivating and applying procedural knowledge to better govern and support water quality modeling processes within organizations.

For conventional titanium matrix composites (TiMCs), there is always a trade-off issue between enhanced strength and ductility of these materials. In this study, we explore a new design methodology ...by reinforcing titanium alloy matrix with carbonaceous nanomaterials and investigate the mechanisms for achieving a good balance of their strength and ductility. The TiMCs were synthesized through a low-cost powder metallurgy route using pre-mixed Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) powders and various carbon based nanofillers, including graphite powders (GPs), graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs) and graphene nanoplates (GNPs), and were further rolled at a temperature of 1173 K with a deformation of 66.7%. Among these three types of carbon reinforcing sources, the GNPs are more easily reacted with TC4 matrix and form more contents of TiC phases after sintering owing to their larger amounts of defects than those of the GPs and GONs. TiC products are identified to play a bridging role for not only connecting the TC4 matrix but also forming coherent interfaces with the TC4 matrix, thus facilitating a strong interfacial bonding of the composites. The as-rolled GNPs/TC4 composites exhibit a 0.2% yield strength of 1146.36 MPa (with an elongation of ∼8.1%), which is 24.6%, 9.22% and 5.62% higher than those of pure TC4, GPs/TC4 and GONs/TC4 composites. The GNPs/TC4 nanocomposites show a better balance of strength and ductility than those of the other two types of nanocomposites. The synergetic strengthening mechanisms are identified to be Orowan strengthening effect, effective load transfer capability of GNPs, and in-situ formation of interfacial TiC structures, which provide optimum interfacial microstructures to achieve good mechanical properties of the TiMCs.

The median survival of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) ranges from 3 to 5 years with current chemotherapeutic regimens. A common secondary genomic alteration detected in MCL is chromosome ...13q31-q32 gain/amplification, which targets a microRNA (miRNA) cluster, miR-17∼92. On the basis of gene expression profiling, we found that high level expression of C13orf25, the primary transcript from which these miRNAs are processed, was associated with poorer survival in patients with MCL (P=0.021). We demonstrated that the protein phosphatase PHLPP2, an important negative regulator of the PI3K/AKT pathway, was a direct target of miR-17∼92 miRNAs, in addition to PTEN and BIM. These proteins were down-modulated in MCL cells with overexpression of the miR-17∼92 cluster. Overexpression of miR-17∼92 activated the PI3K/AKT pathway and inhibited chemotherapy-induced apoptosis in MCL cell lines. Conversely, inhibition of miR-17∼92 expression suppressed the PI3K/AKT pathway and inhibited tumor growth in a xenograft MCL mouse model. Targeting the miR-17∼92 cluster may therefore provide a novel therapeutic approach for patients with MCL.

To explore the interactive influence of the deformation stress state and material microstructural grain size on the fracture behaviour in micro-scaled deformation, a series of micro-scale copper ...specimens of various geometrical dimensions and microstructural grain sizes are prepared and deformed to achieve various stress states represented by stress-related variables, such as the normalised third deviatoric stress invariant and the stress triaxiality. The speckle pattern method of continuous tracking is used to investigate the mechanical responses of materials in various deformation stress states and material microstructures, and a finite-element simulation of each deformation is conducted with the combined surface layer and grain boundary strengthening constitutive model, which considers the contributions of the surface grain, grain interior and grain boundary in representing the grain and geometry sizes. The interactive effects of the normalised third invariant, stress triaxiality and microstructural grain size on the fracture strain are identified and established by accounting for the correlation between the results of simulation and those of physical experimentation. Their influences on the fracture mechanism, mode and behaviour are further explored. The results reveal that greater stress decreases the fracture strain in the tensile deformation of round bar and cylindrical compression and increases the fracture strain in sheet shear and tensile deformations. The larger grain size generates fewer micro-voids, more uneven grain distribution and severer localisation deformation, which accelerates failure. Furthermore, stress triaxiality and the normalised third invariant at a low stress triaxiality are decreased with the increase of grain size, which in turn affects the occurrence of fracture. These effects coexist and compete with each other. In view of these influences, a larger grain size and a higher stress state inhibit the occurrence of fracture for sheet specimens with fracture modes from shear-dominant to dimple-dominant; in contrast, a smaller grain size and a lower stress state inhibit the occurrence of fracture in other cases.

The global organic aerosol (OA) budget is highly uncertain and past studies suggest that models substantially underestimate observed concentrations. Few of these studies have examined the vertical ...distribution of OA. Furthermore, many model-measurement comparisons have been performed with different models for single field campaigns. We synthesize organic aerosol measurements from 17 aircraft campaigns from 2001–2009 and use these observations to consistently evaluate a GEOS-Chem model simulation. Remote, polluted and fire-influenced conditions are all represented in this extensive dataset. Mean observed OA concentrations range from 0.2–8.2 μg sm−3 and make up 15 to 70% of non-refractory aerosol. The standard GEOS-Chem simulation reproduces the observed vertical profile, although observations are underestimated in 13 of the 17 field campaigns (the median observed to simulated ratio ranges from 0.4 to 4.2), with the largest model bias in anthropogenic regions. However, the model is best able to capture the observed variability in these anthropogenically-influenced regions (R2=0.18−0.57), but has little skill in remote or fire-influenced regions. The model bias increases as a function of relative humidity for 11 of the campaigns, possibly indicative of missing aqueous phase SOA production. However, model simulations of aqueous phase SOA suggest a pronounced signature in the mid-troposphere (2–6 km) which is not supported in the observations examined here. Spracklen et al. (2011) suggest adding ~100 Tg yr−1 source of anthropogenically-controlled SOA to close the measurement-model gap, which we add as anthropogenic SOA. This eliminates the model underestimate near source, but leads to overestimates aloft in a few regions and in remote regions, suggesting either additional sinks of OA or higher volatility aerosol at colder temperatures. Sensitivity simulations indicate that fragmentation of organics upon either heterogeneous or gas-phase oxidation could be an important (missing) sink of OA in models, reducing the global SOA burden by 15% and 47% respectively. The best agreement with observations is obtained when the simulated anthropogenically-controlled SOA is increased to ~100 Tg yr−1 accompanied by either a gas-phase fragmentation process or a reduction in the temperature dependence of the organic aerosol partitioning (by decreasing the enthalpy of vaporization from 42 kJ mol−1 to 25 kJ mol−1). These results illustrate that models may require both additional sources and additional sinks to capture the observed concentrations of organic aerosol.

Multi-objective optimization using nondominated sorting genetic ...algorithm II (NSGA-II) is used to maximize the torque and efficiency while reducing the torque ripple of the machine. The torque, torque ripple, and efficiency of the optimized machine have significant improvement by optimizing the machine parameters within a fixed outer axial and radial length. This optimization process can be used to select the best machine design in different aspects' requirement.
