This article explores the opportunities and obstacles of researching women’s trade union activism in the British film and television industries between 1933 and 2017. The surviving material on ...women’s union participation is incomplete and fragmented, and so my research has combined an examination of archival material—the union’s journal and the meeting minutes, correspondence and ephemera of three iterations of its equality committee—with new and existing oral history interviews. Sherry J. Katz has termed this methodological approach “researching around our subjects”, which involves “working outward in concentric circles of related sources” to reconstruct women’s experiences (90). While “researching around my subjects” was a challenging and time-consuming process, it was also a rewarding one, producing important insights into union activism as it relates to gender and breaking new ground in both women’s labour and women’s film and television history. This article concludes with a case study on the appointment of Sarah Benton as researcher for the ACTT’s Patterns report in 1973, revealing the benefits of this methodological approach in reconstructing events which have been effectively erased from the official record.
This article examines how and in what ways workplace 'sexual harassment' achieved social and legal recognition in the UK news press following its importation from North America in the mid-1970s. It ...assesses the role of feminist campaigners working within institutions (trade unions, human rights advocacy, the Equal Opportunities Commission and journalism itself) in shifting public discourse and in using the media to educate and promote social change. We demonstrate that the trajectory was far from a linear progression. Initial hostility within the popular press in the early 1980s was replaced with sympathetic coverage across the party-political spectrum by 1990. However, this consensus broke down in the 1990s as a result of politicised and polarised coverage of a series of claims brought by women in the services and armed forces against the backdrop of debates about 'compensation culture' and membership of the European Union. Whilst change was effected at the level of employment law, formal practice and in the human resources policies of larger employers, 'sexual harassment myths' were resilient as a thread within 'everyday cultural discourse' and, by implication, within informal workplace cultures.

One of two ATLAS Forward Calorimeters, consisting of three modules, one behind the other, was exposed to particle beams of known energies in order to study the detector performance with and without ...the presence of upstream material in the beam, and at the inner edge of the acceptance where shower energy containment is incomplete. Data were taken in the H6 beamline at CERN using electron and hadron beams with energies from 10 to 200 GeV. Results related to the intrinsic detector calibration, based on data taken with a minimal amount of material in front of the detector, have been previously published, but are updated here. This paper focuses on studies of data taken with additional upstream material in place. The effects of this additional material on the linearity and resolution of the response are presented. The response at the inner edge of the acceptance is also investigated. For all analyses, results based on a GEANT4 simulation of the beam-test setup and detector response are also presented.

The effect of cicloxolone sodium (CCX) on the replication of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) was ...investigated. The drug was active during all stages of the virus replication cycle, indicating that it does not operate by the specific inhibition of any single essential virus gene product. The drug reduced the number of VSV particles assembled and released by 100- to 1000-fold. Infectious virus yield was reduced 1000- to 10000-fold, giving a 10-fold or greater increase in the particle/p.f.u. ratio. The reduced number of virus particles produced in the presence of CCX results from two superimposed effects: suppression of VSV secondary transcription and viral protein synthesis, and perturbation of virion assembly. The inhibition of VSV assembly is due to impairment of a Golgi apparatus function related to transport of VSV glycoprotein G to the cell surface, and is characterized by accumulation of viral G and M proteins within the cell. Incubation of VSV-infected cells in the presence of two glycosylation inhibitors, tunicamycin and monensin, similarly leads to intracellular accumulation of G and M proteins, suggesting a common mechanism of action affecting VSV virion assembly. The differential effect of CCX concentration on intracellular levels of the L, N and NS proteins was analysed. CCX also possesses a virucidal effect on mature infectious VSV particles in suspension, 300 µ m reducing the VSV titre about 10-fold in 24 h at 4 °C or 37 °C. The mode of antiviral activity against VSV is compared with that against herpes simplex virus.

Among 118 young adults and 107 community-residing elderly individuals, found that, in young adults, cognitive belief factors ..."externality/control" and "dependency/emotionality" were associated with affective and cognitive aspects of depression. Among older adults, cognitive belief factor "cognitive-emotional rigidity/dependency" was uniquely associated with affective and somatic depressive symptoms. (Author/NB)
The local hadronic calibration scheme developed for the reconstruction and calibration of jets and missing transverse energy in ATLAS has been evaluated using data obtained during combined beam tests ...of modules of the ATLAS liquid argon endcap and forward calorimeters. These tests covered the pseudorapidity range of 2.5<|η|<4.0. The analysis has been performed using special sets of calibration weights and corrections obtained with the Geant4 simulation of a detailed beam-test setup. The evaluation itself has been performed through the careful study of specific calorimeter performance parameters such as e.g. energy response and resolution, shower shapes, as well as different physics lists of the Geant4 simulation.

The effect of cicloxolone sodium (CCX) on the replication of typical representatives of different ...virus families adenovirus type 5 (Ad-5), reovirus type 3 (Reo-3), Bunyamwera and Germiston viruses, poliovirus type 1 (Polio-1) and Semliki Forest virus (SFV) in tissue culture was investigated. The Golgi apparatus inhibitor monensin (Mon) and CCX were shown to have analogous effects on some aspects of virus replication. Although the Mon-like effect of CCX played no role in the antiviral activity against Ad-5, Reo-3 or Polio-1, it could entirely account for the antiviral activity against the Bunyamwera and Germiston viruses, for which inhibition of glycoprotein processing was responsible for the antiviral activity. In the case of SFV, the Mon-like activity of CCX caused cytoplasmic assembly of fully infectious SFV within vacuoles and thus impaired virus release without altering total infectious virus yield. Fewer Ad-5 and Reo-3 progeny were produced in the presence of the drug. CCX had a dose-dependent biphasic effect on the particle:p.f.u. ratio of the Reo-3 yield. At low CCX concentration (<50 µ M ) the virus yield contained poor quality, non-infectious virus, but at higher CCX concentration ( 100 µ M ) low quality virus could no longer be successfully assembled. We conclude that the antiviral effect can be manifested in three ways: (i) by a reduction in the virus particle yield produced; (ii) by a loss of quality (relative infectivity); (iii) by a virucidal effect of the drug. We have previously defined three CCX sensitivity classes. Mechanisms (i), (ii) and (iii) operate against viruses belonging to class CCX s -1 herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1, HSV-2 and vesicular stomatitis virus, but essentially only (i) and (ii) affect Reo-3 (CCX s -2), whereas (i) and possibly (iii) affect Ad-5 (CCX s -2). In the case of SFV (CCX s -3) none of these mechanisms operate, but relocation of assembled virus is found.
