NiFe‐based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are among the most efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts in alkaline medium, but their long‐term OER stabilities are questionable. In this ...work, it is demonstrated that the layered structure makes bulk NiFe LDH intrinsically not stable in OER and the deactivation mechanism of NiFe LDH in OER is further revealed. Both operando electrochemical and structural characterizations show that the interlayer basal plane in bulk NiFe LDH contributes to the OER activity, and the slow diffusion of proton acceptors (e.g., OH−) within the NiFe LDH interlayers during OER causes dissolution of NiFe LDH and therefore decrease in OER activity with time. To improve diffusion of proton acceptors, it is proposed to delaminate NiFe LDH into atomically thin nanosheets, which is able to effectively improve OER stability of NiFe LDH especially at industrial operating conditions such as elevated operating temperatures (e.g., at 80 °C) and large current densities (e.g., at 500 mA cm−2).

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown great performance as general feature representations for object recognition applications. However, for multi-label images that contain multiple objects ...from different categories, scales and locations, global CNN features are not optimal. In this paper, we incorporate local information to enhance the feature discriminative power. In particular, we first extract object proposals from each image. With each image treated as a bag and object proposals extracted from it treated as instances, we transform the multi-label recognition problem into a multi-class multi-instance learning problem. Then, in addition to extracting the typical CNN feature representation from each proposal, we propose to make use of ground-truth bounding box annotations (strong labels) to add another level of local information by using nearest-neighbor relationships of local regions to form a multi-view pipeline. The proposed multi-view multiinstance framework utilizes both weak and strong labels effectively, and more importantly it has the generalization ability to even boost the performance of unseen categories by partial strong labels from other categories. Our framework is extensively compared with state-of-the-art handcrafted feature based methods and CNN based methods on two multi-label benchmark datasets. The experimental results validate the discriminative power and the generalization ability of the proposed framework. With strong labels, our framework is able to achieve state-of-the-art results in both datasets.
Abstract The Type II gamma-ray burst (GRB) 200826A challenges collapsar models by questioning how they can generate a genuinely short-duration event. The other Type I GRB 211211A confused us with a ...kilonova signature observed in the afterglow of a long burst. Here, we propose a comprehensive model in which both bursts are the results of the collapse of Thorne–Żytkow–like objects (TZlOs). The TZlO consists of a central neutron star (NS), with a dense white dwarf (WD) material envelope, which is formed as the aftermath of a WD-NS coalescence. We find that the characteristics of the resultant GRBs depend on whether the TZlO collapses immediately following the WD-NS merger or not. Additionally, the observational properties of the consequent GRBs manifest variations contingent upon whether the collapse of the TZlO results in a magnetar or a black hole. We also show that our model is consistent with the observations of GRB 211211A and GRB 200826A. Specifically, the optical excess in GRB 211211A can be attributed to an engine-fed kilonova, while the supernova bump in GRB 200826A is likely due to the collision between the ejecta and the disk wind shell.
Label distribution learning achieved promising results on ordinal regression tasks such as facial age and attractiveness estimation, especially using deep label distribution learning (DLDL) methods, ...introducing the label distribution learning into deep convolutional neural networks. However, existing DLDL methods have an inconsistency between the training objectives and the evaluation metric, so they may be suboptimal. In addition, these methods always adopt image classification or face recognition models with a large amount of parameters, which carry expensive computation cost and storage overhead. In this paper, we firstly analyze the essential relationship between two state-of-the-art methods (ranking CNN and DLDL) and show that the ranking method is in fact learning label distribution implicitly. This result thus firstly unifies two existing popular state-of-the-art methods into the DLDL framework. Second, in order to alleviate the inconsistency and reduce resource consumption, we design a lightweight network architecture and propose a unified framework which can jointly learn label distribution and regress expectation value. The effectiveness of our approach has been demonstrated on typical ordinal regression tasks including facial age and attractiveness estimation. Our method achieves new state-of-the-art results using the single model with 36× fewer parameters and 3× faster inference speed.

The first gravitational-wave event from the merger of a binary neutron star system (GW170817) was detected recently. The associated short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) has a low isotropic luminosity ...(∼1047 erg s−1) and a peak energy Ep ∼ 145 keV during the initial main emission between −0.3 and 0.4 s. The origin of this short GRB is still under debate, but a plausible interpretation is that it is due to the off-axis emission from a structured jet. We consider two possibilities. First, since the best-fit spectral model for the main pulse of GRB 170817A is a cutoff power law with a hard low-energy photon index ( ), we consider an off-axis photosphere model. We develop a theory of photosphere emission in a structured jet and find that such a model can reproduce a low-energy photon index that is softer than a blackbody through enhancing high-latitude emission. The model can naturally account for the observed spectrum. The best-fit Lorentz factor along the line of sight is ∼20, which demands that there is a significant delay between the merger and jet launching. Alternatively, we consider that the emission is produced via synchrotron radiation in an optically thin region in an expanding jet with decreasing magnetic fields. This model does not require a delay of jet launching but demands a larger bulk Lorentz factor along the line of sight. We perform Markov Chain Monte Carlo fitting to the data within the framework of both models and obtain good fitting results in both cases.
As a typical self-driven many-particle system far from equilibrium, traffic flow exhibits diverse fascinating non-equilibrium phenomena, most of which are closely related to traffic flow stability ...and specifically the growth/dissipation pattern of disturbances. However, the traffic theories have been controversial due to a lack of precise traffic data. We have studied traffic flow from a new perspective by carrying out large-scale car-following experiment on an open road section, which overcomes the intrinsic deficiency of empirical observations. The experiment has shown clearly the nature of car-following, which runs against the traditional traffic flow theory. Simulations show that by removing the fundamental notion in the traditional car-following models and allowing the traffic state to span a two-dimensional region in velocity-spacing plane, the growth pattern of disturbances has changed qualitatively and becomes qualitatively or even quantitatively in consistent with that observed in the experiment.

We show herein that 1,10-dicyano substitution restricts the paragon fluxionality of bullvalene to just 14 isomers which isomerize along a single cycle. The restricted fluxionality of ...1,10-dicyanobullvalene (DCB) is investigated by means of: (i) Bonding analyses of the isomer structures using the adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP). (ii) Quantum dynamical simulations of the isomerizations along the cyclic intrinsic reaction coordinate of the potential energy surface (PES). The PES possesses 14 equivalent potential wells supporting 14 isomers which are separated by 14 equivalent potential barriers supporting 14 transition states. Accordingly, at low temperatures, DCB appears as a hindered molecular rotor, without any delocalization of the wavefunction in the 14 potential wells, without any nuclear spin isomers, and with completely negligible tunneling. These results are compared and found to differ from those for molecular boron rotors. (iii) Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulations of thermally activated isomerizations. (iv) Calculations of the rate constants in the frame of transition state theory (TST) with reasonable agreement achieved with the BOMD results. (v) Simulations of the equilibration dynamics using rate equations for the isomerizations with TST rate coefficients. Accordingly, in the long-time limit, isomerizations of the 14 isomers, each with C
symmetry, approach the "14 C
→ C
" thermally averaged structure. This is a superposition of the 14 equally populated isomer structures with an overall C

The persistent increase in atmospheric CO2 from anthropogenic sources makes research directed toward carbon capture and storage imperative. Current liquid amine absorption technology has several ...drawbacks including hazardous byproducts and a high-energy requirement for regeneration; therefore, research is ongoing to develop more practical methods for capturing CO2 in postcombustion scenarios. The unique properties of carbon-based materials make them specifically promising for CO2 adsorption at low temperature and moderate to high partial pressure. This critical review aims to highlight the development of carbon-based solid sorbents for postcombustion CO2 capture. Specifically, it provides an overview of postcombustion CO2 capture processes with solid adsorbents and discusses a variety of carbon-based materials that could be used. This review focuses on low-cost pyrogenic carbon, activated carbon (AC), and metal–carbon composites for CO2 capture. Further, it touches upon the recent progress made to develop metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and carbon nanomaterials and their general CO2 sorption potential.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a major cause of chronic liver disease worldwide and can lead to fibrosis and cirrhosis. The latest surveillance report published by the National Institute on Alcohol ...Abuse and Alcoholism showed that liver cirrhosis was the 12th leading cause of death in the United States, with a total of 29,925 deaths in 2007, 48% of which were alcohol related. The spectrum of ALD includes simple steatosis, alcoholic hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and superimposed hepatocellular carcinoma. Early work on the pathogenesis of the disease focused on ethanol metabolism–associated oxidative stress and glutathione depletion, abnormal methionine metabolism, malnutrition, and production of endotoxins that activate Kupffer cells. We review findings from recent studies that have characterized specific intracellular signaling pathways, transcriptional factors, aspects of innate immunity, chemokines, epigenetic features, microRNAs, and stem cells that are associated with ALD, improving our understanding of its pathogenesis. Despite this progress, no targeted therapies are available. The cornerstone of treatment for alcoholic hepatitis remains as it was 40 years ago: abstinence, nutritional support, and corticosteroids. There is an urgent need to develop new pathophysiology-oriented therapies. Recent translational studies of human samples and animal models have identified promising therapeutic targets.
Knowledge of shrinkage mechanism and the accompanied cracking behavior is helpful for better understanding the hydraulic and mechanical performance of clay soil under atmosphere condition. Initially ...saturated thin clay layers were prepared and subjected to air drying in this investigation. Water evaporation, volume shrinkage, surface crack initiation and propagation processes were monitored during the whole drying period. With application of image processing technique, the geometric or morphological characteristics of crack patterns were quantitatively described. Results show that the water in the clay layer evaporated at a near constant rate and then it began to decline when the water content was close to the air entry value. The clay layer volume shrinkage was contributed completely by vertical subsidence before desiccation crack initiation, and the measured final vertical shrinkage strain was several times higher than the lateral shrinkage strain. In addition, it was found that most of the cracks and volume shrinkage occurred during the constant rate of evaporation period while the specimen was still saturated. Crack initiation and propagation generally took place in three stages and terminated at the shrinkage limit. During the process of crack propagation, the crack intersections reached a stable value first and were followed by crack length and crack width.
