Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, an intimate relationship between this disease and cardiovascular diseases has been seen. However, few studies assess the development of ...heart failure during this infection. This study aims to determine the predisposing factors for the development of heart failure (HF) during hospital admission of COVID-19 patients.
A retrospective and multicenter study of patients with HF admitted for COVID-19 in 150 Spanish hospitals (SEMI-COVID-19 Registry). A bivariate analysis was performed to relate the different variables evaluated in patients developing heart failure during hospital admission. A multivariate analysis including the most relevant clinical variables obtained in bivariate analyses to predict the outcome of heart failure was performed.
A total of 16.474 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 were included (57.5% men, mean age 67 years), 958 of them (5.8%) developed HF during hospitalization. The risk factors for HF development were: age (odds ratio OR): 1.042; confidence interval 95% (CI 95%): 1.035-1.050;
< 0.001), atrial fibrillation (OR: 2.022; CI 95%: 1.697-2.410;
< 0.001), BMI > 30 kg/m

< 0.001). Patients who developed HF had a higher rate of mortality (54.1% vs. 19.1%,
< 0.001), intubation rate (OR: 2,36;
< 0.001), and ICU admissions (OR: 2.38;
< 0001).
Patients who presented a higher risk of developing HF were older with cardiovascular risk factors. The risk factors for HF development were age, atrial fibrillation, obesity, and peripheral vascular disease. In addition, patients who developed HF more frequently required to be intubated or admitted to the ICU.

“Retractile mesenteritis” was the first name given to a rare, benign, inflammatory disease that affects the adipose tissue of the intestinal mesentery and less frequently other locations. Now labeled ...as mesenteric panniculitis, the pathogenic mechanism remains unclear. Several stimuli could be involved, and it is sometimes associated with other conditions such as malignancy or autoimmune diseases. We present a case of mesenteric panniculitis with extensive abdominal and extra‐abdominal involvement that developed a few months after SARS‐COV2 infection, raising the hypothesis of this virus as a potential trigger for autoinflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

Restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RADseq) and its derived protocols, such as double digest RADseq (ddRADseq), offer a flexible and highly cost-effective strategy for efficient plant genome ...sampling. This has become one of the most popular genotyping approaches for breeding, conservation, and evolution studies in model and non-model plant species. However, universal protocols do not always adapt well to non-model species. Herein, this study reports the development of an optimized and detailed ddRADseq protocol in Eucalyptus dunnii, a non-model species, which combines different aspects of published methodologies. The initial protocol was established using only two samples by selecting the best combination of enzymes and through optimal size selection and simplifying lab procedures. Both single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were determined with high accuracy after applying stringent bioinformatics settings and quality filters, with and without a reference genome. To scale it up to 24 samples, we added barcoded adapters. We also applied automatic size selection, and therefore obtained an optimal number of loci, the expected SNP locus density, and genome-wide distribution. Reliability and cross-sequencing platform compatibility were verified through dissimilarity coefficients of 0.05 between replicates. To our knowledge, this optimized ddRADseq protocol will allow users to go from the DNA sample to genotyping data in a highly accessible and reproducible way.

. Double digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) was compared with the EUChip60K array in 308 individuals from a provenance-progeny trial. The compared SNP set included 8,011 and 19,008 informative SNPs distributed along the 11 chromosomes, respectively. Although the two datasets differed in the percentage of missing data, genome coverage, minor allele frequency and estimated genetic diversity parameters, they revealed a similar genetic structure, showing two subpopulations with little differentiation between them, and low linkage disequilibrium. GS analyses were performed for eleven traits using Genomic Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (GBLUP) and a conventional pedigree-based model (ABLUP). Regardless of the SNP dataset, the predictive ability (PA) of GBLUP was better than that of ABLUP for six traits (Cellulose content, Total and Ethanolic extractives, Total and Klason lignin content and Syringyl and Guaiacyl lignin monomer ratio). When contrasting the SNP datasets used to estimate PAs, the GBLUP-EUChip60K model gave higher and significant PA values for six traits, meanwhile, the values estimated using ddRADseq gave higher values for three other traits. The PAs correlated positively with narrow sense heritabilities, with the highest correlations shown by the ABLUP and GBLUP-EUChip60K. The two genotyping methods, ddRADseq and EUChip60K, are generally comparable for population genetics and genomic prediction, demonstrating the utility of the former when subjected to rigorous SNP filtering. The results of this study provide a basis for future whole-genome studies using ddRADseq in non-model forest species for which SNP arrays have not yet been developed.
Background
The WHO ordinal severity scale has been used to predict mortality and guide trials in COVID-19. However, it has its limitations.
Objective
The present study aims to compare three ...classificatory and predictive models: the WHO ordinal severity scale, the model based on inflammation grades, and the hybrid model.
Design
Retrospective cohort study with patient data collected and followed up from March 1, 2020, to May 1, 2021, from the nationwide SEMI-COVID-19 Registry. The primary study outcome was in-hospital mortality. As this was a hospital-based study, the patients included corresponded to categories 3 to 7 of the WHO ordinal scale. Categories 6 and 7 were grouped in the same category.

The present study proposes a new severity grading scale for COVID-19 hospitalized patients. In our opinion, it is the most informative, representative, and predictive scale in COVID-19 patients to date.

To determine the prevalence of CMV reactivation in a population admitted for severe COVID-19 to a general hospital.
Point prevalence study in all hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19 (admitted ...either to general wards or ICU). Determination of the presence of CMV DNA in circulating blood. COVID-19 was confirmed in patients with compatible clinical manifestations, usually with pneumonia and a positive nasopharyngeal PCR test.
We included 140 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 who consented to participate. A total of 16 patients (11.42%), had circulating CMV-DNA in peripheral blood at the time of the study. Patients with positive CMV viral load were mainly ICU patients (11/37 -29,7%) and only 5/103 cases (4,85%) were hospitalized into general wards. The accumulated doses of corticosteroids (prednisone equivalents) in the study day were (median and IQR) 987.50 mg (396.87-2,454.68) and 187.50 mg (75.00-818.12) respectively in CMV positive and negative patients (p < 0.001). A significant proportion of CMV positive patients were discovered because of the study and were clinically unsuspected by their physicians. The coinfected COVID-CMV positive population had a higher risk of accumulated secondary nosocomially-acquired infections and a worse prognosis.
CMV reactivation should be systematically searched in patients in COVID-19 cases admitted to the ICU.
Aim of study: To validate and characterize new microsatellites or Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR) markers, located within genomic transcribed sequences related to growth and plant developmental traits, ...in Eucalyptus species.Area of study: Eucalyptus species from different Australian origins planted in Argentina.Materials and methods: In total, 134 SSR in 129 candidate genes (CG-SSR) involved in plant development were selected and physically mapped to the E. grandis reference genome by bioinformatic tools. Experimental validation and polymorphism analysis were performed on 48 individuals from E. grandis and interspecific hybrids (E. grandis x E. camaldulensis; E. grandis x E. tereticornis), E. globulus, E. maidenii, E. dunnii and E. benthamii.Main results: 131 out of 134 CG-SSR were mapped on the 11 chromosomes of E. grandis reference genome. Most of the 134 analyzed SSR (> 75%) were positively amplified and 39 were polymorphic in at least one species. A search of annotated genes within a 25 kbp up and downstream region of each SSR location retrieved 773 genes of interest.Research highlights: The new validated and characterized CG-SSR are potentially suitable for comparative QTL mapping, molecular marker-assisted breeding (MAB) and population genetic studies across different species within Symphyomyrtus subgenus.Keywords: CG-SSR; cross-transferability; EST; eucalypts; microsatellite.
