Bennu is an ~500‐m‐diameter rubble‐pile asteroid that is the target of detailed study by the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS‐REx) ...mission. Here we use data from the OSIRIS‐REx Laser Altimeter to assess depth‐to‐diameter ratios (d/D) of 108 impact craters larger than 10 m in diameter. The d/D of craters on Bennu ranges from 0.02 to 0.19. The mean is 0.10 ± 0.03. The smallest craters show the broadest range in d/D, consistent with d/D measurements on other asteroids. A few craters have central mounds, which is interpreted as evidence that a more competent substrate lies a few meters beneath them. The range of d/D narrows as crater size increases, with craters larger than 80 m tending toward smaller d/D. At large scales, increases in target strength with depth, combined with target curvature, may affect crater morphometry.

Between 2018 and 2020, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS‐REx) spacecraft orbited a small asteroid called Bennu in preparation to collect a sample for return to Earth. Bennu is a “rubble‐pile” asteroid, meaning an aggregate of rock fragments that have coalesced together in space. OSIRIS‐REx observations showed that Bennu has many craters on its surface, which formed when other, smaller objects collided with it in the past. Crater depths and widths (diameters), in addition to relating to the size and speed of the impacting object, also reflect the physical characteristics of the impacted surface. Accordingly, we measured the depths and diameters of many of Bennu's craters to better understand the surface and interior properties of this rubble‐pile asteroid and how it compares to other asteroids. The smaller craters on Bennu have a variety of depths, even among similarly sized craters. The largest are so wide that they appear to be affected by the curvature of Bennu's surface and by the presence of stronger material at depth. We observe mounds inside some of the smaller craters, supporting the idea that a more competent substrate underlies the surface material.

Vesta is a large differentiated rocky body in the main asteroid belt that accreted within the first few million years after the formation of the earliest solar system solids. The Dawn spacecraft ...extensively imaged Vesta's surface, revealing a collision-dominated history. Results show that Vesta's cratering record has a strong north-south dichotomy. Vesta's northern heavily cratered terrains retain much of their earliest history. The southern hemisphere was reset, however, by two major collisions in more recent times. We estimate that the youngest of these impact structures, about 500 kilometers across, formed about 1 billion years ago, in agreement with estimates of Vesta asteroid family age based on dynamical and collisional constraints, supporting the notion that the Vesta asteroid family was formed during this event.

We investigated the origin of unusual pitted terrain on asteroid Vesta, revealed in images from the Dawn spacecraft. Pitted terrain is characterized by irregular rimless depressions found in and ...around several impact craters, with a distinct morphology not observed on other airless bodies. Similar terrain is associated with numerous marþian craters, where pits are thought to form through degassing of volatile-bearing material heated by the impact. Pitted terrain on Vesta may have formed in a similar manner, which indicates that portions of the surface contain a relatively large volatile component. Exogenic materials, such as water-rich carbonaceous chondrites, may be the source of volatiles, suggesting that impactor materials are preserved locally in relatively high abundance on Vesta and that impactor composition has played an important role in shaping the asteroid's geology.

ABSTRACT
We use Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph long-slit G430M and G750M spectra to analyse the extended O iii λ5007 emission in a sample of 12 nearby (z < 0.12) luminous ...(Lbol > 1.6 × 1045 erg s−1) QSO2s. The purpose of the study is to determine the properties of the mass outflows of ionized gas and their role in active galactic nucleus feedback. We measure fluxes and velocities as functions of radial distances. Using cloudy models and ionizing luminosities derived from O iii λ5007, we are able to estimate the densities for the emission-line gas. From these results, we derive masses of O iii-emitting gas, mass outflow rates, kinetic energies, kinetic luminosities, momenta, and momentum flow rates as a function of radial distance for each of the targets. For the sample, masses are several times $10^{3}$–$10^{7}\, {\rm M_{\odot }}$ and peak outflow rates are from 9.3 × 10−3 to $10.3\, {\rm M_{\odot }}\, {\rm yr^{-1}}$. The peak kinetic luminosities are (3.4 × 10−8)–(4.9 × 10−4) of the bolometric luminosity, which does not approach the (5.0 × 10−3)–(5.0 × 10−2) range required by some models for efficient feedback. For Mrk 34, which has the largest kinetic luminosity of our sample, in order to produce efficient feedback there would have to be 10 times more O iii-emitting gas than that we detected at its position of maximum kinetic luminosity. Three targets show extended O iii emission, but compact outflow regions. This may be due to different mass profiles or different evolutionary histories.
The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security–Regolith Explorer mission will return a sample to Earth from asteroid (101955) Bennu. Digital terrain models (DTMs) of the ...asteroid, and products enabled by them, are key to understanding the origin and evolution of the asteroid, providing geological and geophysical context for the sample, maximizing the amount of sample returned, navigating the spacecraft, and ensuring the safety of the spacecraft during sampling.
The mission has two approaches for producing these DTMs: a camera-based approach and a lidar-based approach. We provide an overview of the methods used for these two approaches and how they fit into the originally planned mission. We also discuss a summary of tests using these plans to evaluate the expected performance of the DTMs and describe the data products derived from them.
•OSIRIS-REx uses two approaches to make digital terrain maps of asteroid Bennu.•Digital terrain maps are produced at global and local scales.•Global shape models from images and laser altimetry achieve 1 to 0.1 m accuracy.•A simulated truth shape model shows that stereophotoclinometry is effective.•Products such as geopotential elevation, slope, and tilt can be derived from the DTMs.

We present the final results from a high sampling rate, multi-month, spectrophotometric reverberation mapping campaign undertaken to obtain either new or improved H{beta} reverberation lag ...measurements for several relatively low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We have reliably measured the time delay between variations in the continuum and H{beta} emission line in six local Seyfert 1 galaxies. These measurements are used to calculate the mass of the supermassive black hole at the center of each of these AGNs. We place our results in context to the most current calibration of the broad-line region (BLR) R{sub BLR}-L relationship, where our results remove outliers and reduce the scatter at the low-luminosity end of this relationship. We also present velocity-resolved H{beta} time-delay measurements for our complete sample, though the clearest velocity-resolved kinematic signatures have already been published.
We present a Hubble Space Telescope survey of extended O iii λ5007 emission for a sample of 12 nearby (z < 0.12), luminous Type 2 quasars (QSO2s), which we use to measure the extent and kinematics of ...their AGN-ionized gas. We find that the size of the observed O iii regions scale with luminosity in comparison to nearby, less luminous Seyfert galaxies and radially outflowing kinematics to exist in all targets. We report an average maximum outflow radius of ∼600 pc, with gas continuing to be kinematically influenced by the central active galactic nucleus (AGN) out to an average radius of ∼1130 pc. These findings question the effectiveness of AGNs being capable of clearing material from their host bulge in the nearby universe and suggest that disruption of gas by AGN activity may prevent star formation without requiring evacuation. Additionally, we find a dichotomy in our targets when comparing O iii radial extent and nuclear FWHM, where QSO2s with compact O iii morphologies typically possess broader nuclear emission lines.
A growing body of evidence suggests that some, if not all, scattering regions of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are clumpy. The inner AGN components cannot be spatially resolved with current ...instruments and must be studied by numerical simulations of observed spectroscopy and polarization data. We run radiative transfer models in the optical/UV for a variety of AGN reprocessing regions with different distributions of clumpy scattering media. We obtain geometry-sensitive polarization spectra and images to improve our previous AGN models and their comparison with the observations. We use the latest public version 1.2 of the Monte Carlo code STOKES presented in the first two papers of this series to model AGN reprocessing regions of increasing morphological complexity. We replace previously uniform-density media with up to thousands of constant-density clumps. Our modeling shows that the introduction of fragmented dusty tori significantly alters the resulting net polarization of an AGN. Comparison of our models to polarization observations of large AGN samples greatly favors geometrically compact clumpy tori over extended ones.

ABSTRACT We present an analysis of 43 years (1972 to 2015) of spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. This includes 12 years of new unpublished observations (2003 to 2015). We ...compiled about 1600 Hβ spectra and analyzed the long-term spectral variations of the 5100 continuum and the Hβ line. Our analysis is based on standard procedures, including the Lomb-Scargle method, which is known to be rather limited to such heterogeneous data sets, and a new method developed specifically for this project that is more robust and reveals a ∼5700 day periodicity in the continuum light curve, the Hβ light curve, and the radial velocity curve of the red wing of the Hβ line. The data are consistent with orbital motion inside the broad emission line region of the source. We discuss several possible mechanisms that can explain this periodicity, including orbiting dusty and dust-free clouds, a binary black hole system, tidal disruption events, and the effect of an orbiting star periodically passing through an accretion disk.
