Bottlenose dolphins encountered around the Irish coast are considered part of a wide‐ranging coastal community; however, knowledge on the significance of the north of Ireland for this species is ...limited by a lack of dedicated effort.
Through social media, the opportunity now exists to gather large volumes of citizen science data in the form of high‐quality images, potentially extending the spatial and temporal scope of photo‐identification studies.
The purpose of this study was to investigate social media as a data resource for photo‐identification studies and to provide a preliminary assessment of bottlenose dolphins in the north of Ireland. Specifically, the study sought to examine the photo‐identification data for spatial clustering.
The study identified 54 well‐marked individuals and provided evidence of potential year‐round occurrence, with successful re‐sightings throughout the study period (2007–2016). There was a geographic concentration of re‐sightings along the north of Ireland, suggestive of interannual site fidelity. These results provide scientific rationale for strategically targeting the north of Ireland in future research on the Irish coastal community.
For effective conservation of the bottlenose dolphin it is imperative that scientific research, and resultant management objectives, consider wide‐ranging communities such as the Irish coastal community. Our research highlights data collection via social media as a cost‐effective and scientifically valuable tool in the photo‐identification of coastal cetaceans. We recommend that this method is used in research on low‐density and wide‐ranging coastal cetaceans.

Language-rich experiences in early childhood play a critical role in a child's language development, academic success and well-being. This study aimed to understand New Zealand parents/caregivers' ...knowledge and beliefs about language rich experiences and child language development. A survey was developed and distributed online using Qualtrics. Items sought information about participants' demographics, perceived influences and sources of information about child language development. Participants were asked to indicate 'agree' or 'disagree' with 30 statements on child language development using a five point Likert-type scale. Five hundred responses were analyzed. The participant sample was skewed towards those with higher levels of education. Participants showed strong general knowledge of the importance of interpersonal interaction in developing language. The importance of early vocabulary development on children's learning trajectories was not well understood. Levels of parent/caregiver education were correlated with higher accuracy on child language development items. Approximately half the participants had sought information on child speech/language development, with health professionals and the internet being the most commonly used sources. Education opportunities for parent/caregivers on how to maximize child language development in the preschool years may be indicated.
To evaluate whether changes in expression of CD39 by regulatory T lymphocytes (Treg) impact treatment response in inflammatory bowel disease. To then define the biological role of expression of CD39 ...on Treg in an animal model of colitis.
A prospective study of consecutive patients commencing anti-tumor necrosis factor therapy with infliximab (IFX) or adalimumab (ADA), who were then followed for 12 months. Treatment responses were defined both symptomatically and by endoscopy showing mucosal healing. Peripheral blood Tregs were quantified by flow cytometry. Functional importance of CD39 expression by Treg was determined in an adoptive T-cell transfer model of colitis.
Forty-seven patients (ulcerative colitis, n = 22; Crohn's disease, n = 25) were recruited; 16 patients were complete responders and 13 nonresponders to anti-tumor necrosis factor. CD39 expression by Treg was lower in active inflammatory bowel disease and increased significantly after treatment in responders (CD39Treg/total Treg; 8% at baseline to 22.5% at late time point, P < 0.001). Responders were more likely to have therapeutic drug levels and in multivariate analysis therapeutic drug levels were associated with higher expression of CD39 by FoxP3 Treg and lower frequencies of interleukin 17A expressing cells. Tregs with genetic deletion of CD39 exhibit decrements in potential to suppress intestinal inflammation in a murine (CD45RB) T-cell transfer model of colitis in vivo, when compared with wild-type Treg.
Increased expression of CD39 by peripheral blood Treg is observed in the setting of clinical and endoscopic remission in inflammatory bowel disease. Deficiency of CD39 expression by Treg can be linked to inability to suppress experimental colitis.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) infection in cystic fibrosis (CF) is characterized in stages: never (prior to first positive culture) to incident (first positive culture) to chronic. The association of ...Pa infection stage with lung function trajectory is poorly understood and the impact of age on this association has not been examined. We hypothesized that FEV
decline would be slowest prior to Pa infection, intermediate after incident infection and greatest after chronic Pa infection.
Participants in a large US prospective cohort study diagnosed with CF prior to age 3 contributed data through the U.S. CF Patient Registry. Cubic spline linear mixed effects models were used to evaluate the longitudinal association of Pa stage (never, incident, chronic using 4 different definitions) with FEV
adjusted for relevant covariates
Models contained interaction terms between age and Pa stage.
1,264 subjects born 1992-2006 provided a median 9.5 (IQR 0.25 to 15.75) years of follow up through 2017. 89% developed incident Pa; 39-58% developed chronic Pa depending on the definition. Compared to never Pa, incident Pa infection was associated with greater annual FEV
decline and chronic Pa infection with the greatest FEV
decline. The most rapid FEV
decline and strongest association with Pa infection stage was seen in early adolescence (ages 12-15).
Annual FEV
decline worsens significantly with each Pa infection stage in children with CF. Our findings suggest that measures to prevent chronic infection, particularly during the high-risk period of early adolescence, could mitigate FEV
decline and improve survival.

Aim Reproductive traits are important mediators of establishment and spread of introduced species, both directly and through interactions with other life-history traits and extrinsic factors. We ...identify features of the reproductive biology of Australian acacias associated with invasiveness. Location Global. Methods We reviewed the pollination biology, seed biology and alternative modes of reproduction of Australian acacias using primary literature, online searches and unpublished data. We used comparative analyses incorporating an Acacia phylogeny to test for associations between invasiveness and eight reproductive traits in a group of introduced and invasive (23) and non-invasive (129) species. We also explore the distribution of groups of trait 'syndromes' between invasive and non-invasive species. Results Reproductive trait data were only available for 126 of 152 introduced species in our data set, representing 23/23 invasive and 103/129 non-invasive species. These data suggest that invasives reach reproductive maturity earlier (10/13 within 2 years vs. 7/26 for non-invasives) and are more commonly able to resprout (11/21 vs. 13/54), although only time to reproductive maturity was significant when phylogenetic relationships were controlled for. Our qualitative survey of the literature suggests that invasive species in general tend to have generalist pollination systems, prolific seed production, efficient seed dispersal and the accumulation of large and persistent seed banks that often have fire-, heat- or disturbance-triggered germination cues. Conclusions Invasive species respond quicker to disturbance than non-invasive taxa. Traits found to be significant in our study require more in-depth analysis involving data for a broader array of species given how little is known of the reproductive biology of so many taxa in this species-rich genus. Sets of reproductive traits characteristic of invasive species and a general ability to reproduce effectively in new locations are widespread in Australian acacias. Unless there is substantial evidence to the contrary, care should be taken with all introductions.

The widely used, risk-based Lymphome Malin de Burkitt (LMB) chemotherapy regimen has improved survival rates for children with mature B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL); however, associated late ...effects remain understudied. We assessed late health outcomes after LMB treatment in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.
Multivariable regression models compared chronic health conditions, health status, and socioeconomic and neurocognitive outcomes between survivors of NHL treated with the LMB regimen (n = 126), survivors of NHL treated with non-LMB regimens (n = 444), and siblings (n = 1,029).
LMB survivors were a median age of 10.2 years (range, 2.5 to 20.5 years) at diagnosis and 24.0 years (range, 10.3 to 35.3 years) at evaluation. Compared with siblings, LMB survivors were at increased risk for adverse health outcomes. However, survivors of NHL treated with LMB and non-LMB regimens did not differ with regard to risk of having any chronic health conditions, impaired health status, neurocognitive deficits, or poorer socioeconomic outcomes. Increased risk for the following specific neurologic conditions was observed in LMB survivors compared with non-LMB survivors: epilepsy (relative risk RR, 15.2; 95% CI, 3.1 to 73.4); balance problems (RR, 8.9; 95% CI, 2.3 to 34.8); tremors (RR, 7.5; 95% CI, 1.9 to 29.9); weakness in legs (RR, 8.1; 95% CI, 2.5 to 26.4); severe headaches (RR, 3.2; 95% CI, 1.6 to 6.3); and prolonged arm, leg, or back pain (RR, 4.0; 95% CI, 2.2 to 7.1). The survivors from the group C LMB risk group (n = 50) were at the highest risk for these conditions; however, except for worse functional status (odds ratio, 2.7; 95% CI, 1.2 to 5.8), they were not at increased risk for other adverse health status or socioeconomic outcomes compared with non-LMB survivors.
Survivors treated with LMB and non-LMB regimens are largely comparable in late health outcomes except for excess neurotoxicity among LMB survivors. These data inform treatment efforts seeking to optimize disease control while minimizing toxicity.
We report the crystal structures and elementary properties of the new aurobismuthides La3Au3Bi4, Ce3Au3Bi4, Pr3Au3Bi4, Nd3Au3Bi4, Sm3Au3Bi4, and Gd3Au3Bi4. These ternary compounds are found only for ...the large lanthanides and crystallize in the cubic Y3Au3Sb4 structure type, which is a stuffed Th3P4-type derivative. The compounds are electron-precise, leading to semiconducting behavior, and display magnetic properties arising from localized lanthanide f states. Resistivity data, Seebeck coefficient measurements, and electronic structure calculations suggest that these phases are heavily doped, p-type semiconductors. Nd3Au3Bi4 and Sm3Au3Bi4 have Seebeck coefficients of 105 and 190 μV/K at 350 K, respectively, making them worthy of further thermoelectric studies.
