CASE HISTORY: Three weanling Thoroughbred fillies were presented during autumn with depression, muscle rigidity and, in one case, colic symptoms and cardiovascular shock. CLINICAL FINDINGS: All ...fillies had abnormal physical examinations that included elevated heart rates and respiratory rates coupled with muscle rigidity through the back and rump. Biochemistry revealed markedly elevated creatinine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase which indicated a myopathy. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT: All three horses were diagnosed with presumptive equine atypical myopathy. The horses received supportive therapy as per the literature available at the time regarding this condition; two responded to supportive therapy and survived, and one was euthanased due to a rapid deterioration in clinical status. PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: Following post mortem of one case, histology of the trapezius muscle demonstrated an acute, severe myofibre degeneration. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Atypical myopathy and a very similar disorder termed seasonal pasture myopathy in North America are potentially fatal, pasture-related syndromes that have been described in Europe and America but have not been previously described in New Zealand. This report describes three presumptive cases of this unique syndrome in New Zealand for the first time; it outlines the characteristics of the condition; and includes recently published information regarding diagnosis and treatment.

We compared the hemodynamic effects of a bolus administration of 1 microg/kg remifentanil for 1, 3, and 5 min (1, 0.33, and 0.2 microg. kg(-1). min(-1), respectively) in patients scheduled for ...coronary artery bypass grafting anesthetized with small-dose propofol. The study was terminated after only eight patients had been enrolled (three received remifentanil at a rate of 1.0 microg. kg(-1). min(-1), two at 0.33 microg. kg(-1). min(-1), and three at 0.2 microg. kg(-1). min(-1)) because of severe hemodynamic instability, which was particularly marked in four patients and consisted of severe bradycardia in one patient and severe hypotension with a reduction in systemic vascular resistance in three others. One patient showed evidence of myocardial ischemia. All patients responded to therapeutic interventions. The results show that remifentanil should be given only by slow infusion to such patients.

The surface adsorption behavior and the solution microstructure of mixtures of the C6 isomer of anionic surfactant sodium para-dodecyl benzene sulfonate, ABS, with nonionic surfactant monodecyl ...triethyleneglycol ether, C10E3, have been investigated using a combination of neutron reflectivity, NR, and small-angle neutron scattering, SANS. In solution, the mixing of C10E3 and ABS results in the formation of small globular micelles over most of the composition range (100:0 to 20:80 ABS/C10E3). Planar aggregates (lamellar or unilamellar vesicles, ULV) are observed for solution compositions rich in the nonionic surfactant (>80 mol % nonionic). Prior to the transition to planar aggregates, the micelle aggregation number increases with increasing nonionic composition. The lamellar-phase region is preceded by a narrow range of composition over which mixtures of micelles and small unilamellar vesicles coexist. The variation in surface absorption behavior with solution composition shows a strong surface partitioning of the more surface-active component, C10E3. This pronounced departure from ideal mixing is not readily explained by existing surfactant mixing theories. In the presence of Ca2+ ions, a more complex evolution of solution phase behavior with solution composition is observed. The lamellar-phase region occurs over a broader range of solution compositions at the expense of the small-vesicle phase. The phase boundaries are shifted to lower nonionic compositions, and the extent to which the solution-phase diagrams are modified increases with increasing calcium ion concentration. The SANS data for the large planar aggregates are consistent with large polydisperse flexible unilamellar vesicles. In the presence of Ca2+ ions, the surface adsorption patterns become more consistent with ideal mixing in the nonionic-rich region of the surface-phase diagram. However, in the ABS-rich regions the surface behavior is more complex because of the spontaneous formation of more complex surface microstructures (bilayers to multilayers). Both in water and in the presence of Ca2+ ions the variations in the surface adsorption behavior and in the solution mesophase structure do not appear to be closely correlated.

We describe the design, construction, calibration and use of a near-infrared thermodynamic radiation thermometer to measure blackbodies from 400 K to 1300 K. The motivation for this work is the ...pending redefinition of the kelvin and the need for direct, thermodynamic temperature measurements of the fixed-point blackbodies presently used in the realization of the temperature scale. The challenges of accurately measuring Planck radiances which vary greatly in radiance level and spectral shape are discussed. Methods to characterize the components used in the radiation thermometer design are described. The use of this radiation thermometer as a relative primary thermometer and the resulting residuals are shown. We describe radiometric calibration procedures for using the radiation thermometer as an absolute primary thermometer. Preliminary data showing the initial radiometric calibration steps are discussed.

The human microbiota functions at the interface between diet, medication-use, lifestyle, host immune development and health. It is therefore closely aligned with many of the recognised modifiable ...factors that influence bone mass accrual in the young, and bone maintenance and skeletal decline in older populations. While understanding of the relationship between micro-organisms and bone health is still in its infancy, two decades of broader microbiome research and discovery supports a role of the human gut microbiome in the regulation of bone metabolism and pathogenesis of osteoporosis as well as its prevention and treatment. Pre-clinical research has demonstrated biological interactions between the microbiome and bone metabolism. Furthermore, observational studies and randomized clinical trials have indicated that therapeutic manipulation of the microbiota by oral administration of probiotics may influence bone turnover and prevent bone loss in humans. In this paper, we summarize the content, discussion and conclusions of a workshop held by the Osteoporosis and Bone Research Academy of the Royal Osteoporosis Society in October, 2020. We provide a detailed review of the literature examining the relationship between the microbiota and bone health in animal models and in humans, as well as formulating the agenda for key research priorities required to advance this field. We also underscore the potential pitfalls in this research field that should be avoided and provide methodological recommendations to facilitate bridging the gap from promising concept to a potential cause and intervention target for osteoporosis.

The Large Underground Xenon (LUX) collaboration has designed and constructed a dual-phase xenon detector, in order to conduct a search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), a leading dark ...matter candidate. The goal of the LUX detector is to clearly detect (or exclude) WIMPS with a spin independent cross-section per nucleon of 2×10−46cm2, equivalent to ∼1event/100kg/month in the inner 100-kg fiducial volume (FV) of the 370-kg detector. The overall background goals are set to have <1 background events characterized as possible WIMPs in the FV in 300 days of running.

An accurate diagnosis is an integral component of patient care for children with rare genetic disease. Recent advances in sequencing, in particular whole‐exome sequencing (WES), are identifying the ...genetic basis of disease for 25–40% of patients. The diagnostic rate is probably influenced by when in the diagnostic process WES is used. The Finding Of Rare Disease GEnes (FORGE) Canada project was a nation‐wide effort to identify mutations for childhood‐onset disorders using WES. Most children enrolled in the FORGE project were toward the end of the diagnostic odyssey. The two primary outcomes of FORGE were novel gene discovery and the identification of mutations in genes known to cause disease. In the latter instance, WES identified mutations in known disease genes for 105 of 362 families studied (29%), thereby informing the impact of WES in the setting of the diagnostic odyssey. Our analysis of this dataset showed that these known disease genes were not identified prior to WES enrollment for two key reasons: genetic heterogeneity associated with a clinical diagnosis and atypical presentation of known, clinically recognized diseases. What is becoming increasingly clear is that WES will be paradigm altering for patients and families with rare genetic diseases.

Two competing philosophical paradigms characterize approaches to the evolution of the human mind. One postulates continuity between animal and human behavioral capacities. The other assumes that ...humans and animals are separated by major qualitative behavioral and mental gaps. This paper presents a continuity model that suggests that expanded human mental capacities primarily reflect the increased information processing capacities of the enlarged human brain including the enlarged neocortex, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. These increased information processing capacities enhance human abilities to combine and recombine highly differentiated actions, perceptions, and concepts in order to construct larger, more complex, and highly variable behavioral units in a variety of behavioral domains including language, social intelligence, tool-making, and motor sequences. Environmental input, including self-generated input, interacts with mental constructional capacities to assure that developing humans acquire species-typical and culturally-specific behavioral patterns. This mental constructional model is compatible with our current understanding of differences between human and non-human primate brains, of human brain plasticity, and of the minimal genetic differences between humans and chimpanzees.

Using a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb-1, the observation of a new excited $Ξ^{0}_{b}$ resonance decaying to ...the $Ξ^{-}_{b}$$π$+ final state is presented. The state, referred to as $Ξ_b$(6227)0, has a measured mass and natural width of $m$$(Ξ_b$(6227)0) = $6227.1^{+1.4}_{-1.5}$ ± 0.5 MeV and Γ($Ξ_b$(6227)0) = $18.6^{+5.0}_{-4.1}$ ± 1.4 MeV, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The production rate of the $Ξ_b$(6227)0 state relative to that of the $Ξ^{-}_{b}$ baryon in the kinematic region 2 < $η$ < 5 and pT < 30 GeV is measured to be $\frac{f_{Ξ_b}(6227)^0}{f_{Ξ_b^-}}$ $\mathscr{B}$($Ξ_b$(6227)0 → $Ξ^-_b$$π^+$) = 0.045 ± 0.008 ± 0.004; where $\mathscr{B}$($Ξ_b$(6227)0 → $Ξ^-_b$$π^+$) is the branching fraction of the decay, and $f$$Ξ$$_{b}$$_{(6227)^0}$ and $f$$Ξ$$_{b}^-$ represent fragmentation fractions. Improved measurements of the mass and natural width of the previously observed $Ξ_b$$(6227)^-$ state, along with the mass of the $Ξ^{-}_{b}$ baryon, are also reported. Both measurements are significantly more precise than, and consistent with, previously reported values.
