Understanding of the exact nature of three-nucleon forces is the most challenging topic in the field of nuclear physics. Three-nucleon break-up reaction is a good tool to look into the underlying ...dynamics of the nuclear force, thanks to its rich kinematical phase space which has different levels of sensitivity to three-nucleon force effects. The recent studies on few-nucleon systems have revealed that the current nuclear force models cannot describe nucleon-deuteron scattering data accurately. In the present work, the analyzing powers of the proton-deuteron break-up reaction obtained using a 190 MeV polarized proton beam will be discussed. We present for the first time the vector analyzing powers for the kinematics in which one of the protons scatters to intermediate and large scattering angles at this energy. The results show a fairly good agreement with various theoretical predictions for both intermediate and large scattering angles of the break-up phase space.

We report on a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in electron-induced breakup of He3 proceeding to pd and ppn final states, performed in quasi-elastic kinematics at ...Q2=0.25(GeV/c)2 for missing momenta up to 250MeV/c. These observables represent highly sensitive tools to investigate the electromagnetic and spin structure of He3 and the relative importance of two- and three-body effects involved in the breakup reaction dynamics. The measured asymmetries cannot be satisfactorily reproduced by state-of-the-art calculations of He3 unless their three-body segment is adjusted, indicating that the spin-dependent part of the nuclear interaction governing the three-body breakup process is much smaller than previously thought.

The elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering process can be used to study three-nucleon dynamics, but in order to draw reliable conclusions based on the comparison of theoretical predictions and data, an ...estimation of theoretical uncertainties is necessary. We consider the statistical errors arising from a propagation of uncertainties of the two-nucleon interaction parameters to the three-nucleon system, truncation errors, regulator dependencies, and uncertainties arising from using the formalism of partial waves. We give an example of the nucleon-deuteron spin correlation coefficient Cz,x, obtained within the Faddeev approach, to discuss magnitudes of the above mentioned theoretical uncertainties. We find that using various models of the nuclear forces results in the dominant theoretical uncertainty for the nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering observables.

We report new measurements of the double-polarized photodisintegration of 3He at an incident photon energy of 16.5 MeV, carried out at the High Intensity γ-ray Source (HIγS) facility located at ...Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The spin-dependent double-differential cross sections and the contribution from the three-body channel to the Gerasimov–Drell–Hearn (GDH) integrand were extracted and compared with the state-of-the-art three-body calculations. The calculations, which include the Coulomb interaction and are in good agreement with the results of previous measurements at 12.8 and 14.7 MeV, deviate from the new cross section results at 16.5 MeV. The GDH integrand was found to be about one standard deviation larger than the maximum value predicted by the theories.

We formulate a general and exact method of partial-wave decomposition (PWD) of any nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential and any three-nucleon (3N) force. The approach allows one to efficiently use symbolic ...algebra software to generate the interaction-dependent part of the program code calculating the interaction. We demonstrate the feasibility of this approach for the one-boson exchange BonnB potential, a recent nucleon-nucleon chiral force and the chiral two-pion-exchange three-nucleon force. In all cases very good agreement between the new and the traditional PWD is found. The automated PWD offered by the new approach is of the utmost importance in view of future applications of numerous chiral N3LO contributions to the 3N force in three-nucleon calculations.

We review the construction and applications of exactly Poincaré invariant quantum mechanical models of few-degree of freedom systems. We discuss the construction of dynamical representations of the ...Poincaré group on few-particle Hilbert spaces, the relation to quantum field theory, the formulation of cluster properties, and practical considerations related to the construction of realistic interactions and the solution of the dynamical equations. Selected applications illustrate the utility of this approach.
