Attempting to mix the three management specifications -- Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT), ITIL, and ISO 17799 -- can be daunting, and much work has been done to harmonize them. ISO/TEC 17799:2000 specifies best practices for security in 12 areas and offers guidance on such topics as protecting personal data, internal information, and intellectual property. By wrapping process, people, and technologies together, ITIL with COBIT and ISO 17799 give IT the reference framework for governing its operations.
