Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) are emerging anthropogenic compounds that have recently become the target of global concern due to their ubiquitous presence in the ...environment, persistence, and bioaccumulative properties. This study was carried out to investigate the migration of PFOS and PFOA in soils and groundwater in a U.S. metropolitan area.
We observed elevated levels in surface soils (median: 12.2 ng PFOS/g dw and 8.0 ng PFOA/g dw), which were much higher than the soil-screening levels for groundwater protection developed in this study. The measured levels in subsurface soils show a general increase with depth, suggesting a downward movement toward the groundwater table and a potential risk of aquifer contamination. Furthermore, concentrations of PFOS and PFOA in monitoring wells in the source zone varied insignificantly over 5 years (2009–2013), suggesting limited or no change in either the source or the magnitude of the source. The analysis also shows that natural processes of dispersion and dilution can significantly attenuate the groundwater contamination; the adsorption on aquifer solids, on the other hand, appears to have limited effects on the transport of PFOS and PFOA in the aquifer. The probabilistic exposure assessment indicates that ingestion of contaminated groundwater constitutes a much more important exposure route than ingestion of contaminated soil. Overall, the results suggest that (i) the transport of PFOS and PFOA is retarded in the vadose zone, but not in the aquifer; (ii) the groundwater contamination of PFOS and PFOA often follows their release to surface soils by years, if not decades; and (iii) the aquifer can be a major source of exposure for communities living near point sources.

The importance of biofilm in tire derived aggregates (TDA) based underground systems has been investigated in this paper, to assess the utilization of tire waste as a cost-effective and sustainable resource for stormwater treatment. The primary objective of this study is to look into the role of biofilms in preventing metal leaching from a TDA based stormwater treatment system and to estimate the life span of a TDA based stormwater treatment system. TDA subjected to different influents to promote or limit the growth of biofilms were analyzed for their leaching and adsorption potential for fifteen different metals through 72 flushes, which is representative of roughly 9 years of TDA exposure to storm events in the upper Midwest USA. Biofilm growth on a manufacturing byproduct (wire exposed-TDA) was higher than on the traditional TDA. The presence of biofilm on TDA had a minor impact on orthophosphate adsorption as observed in a previous study conducted by the authors. However, metals such as iron, zinc and copper, which were previously a concern, had substantially lower leaching into the stored runoff. In addition, the orthophosphate removal from runoff by TDA with a biofilm through 72 flushes indicates that TDA based underground systems can have orthophosphate removal life span beyond 8–9 years. Thus, TDA with biofilms in an underground storage/infiltration chamber has the potential to establish itself as a sustainable, cost-effective, and long life-span alternative for stormwater remediation of orthophosphate pollution without leaching of metals.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) are persistent organic pollutants that have been found to be ubiquitous in the environment. This article, for the first time, delineates ...removal areas of these polar compounds on a coagulation diagram that associates chemical conditions with different coagulation mechanisms. Variables considered were solution pH, coagulant dosage, coagulants (alum and ferric chloride), natural organic matter (NOM), initial turbidity, and flocculation time.
The jar-test results show that conventional coagulation (alum dosage of 10–60 mg/L and final pH of 6.5–8.0) removed ≤20% of PFOS and PFOA. These chemicals tended to be removed better by enhanced coagulation at higher coagulant dosages (>60 mg/L) and (thus) lower final pH (4.5–6.5). A coagulation diagram was developed to define the coagulant dosage and solution pH for PFOS/PFOA removal. The results suggest that the primary PFOS/PFOA removal mechanism is adsorption to fine Al hydroxide flocs freshly formed during the initial stage of coagulation; increasing flocculation time from 2 to 90 min could not further improve PFOS and PFOA removals. Furthermore, the effect of NOM on PFOS/PFOA removal by coagulation was examined, and possible removal mechanisms were discussed.

Our hypothesis that longer-chained perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) outcompete shorter-chained PFAAs during adsorption was tested in this study, wherein the adsorption interactions of six frequently ...detected PFAAs with kaolinite clay were modeled and examined experimentally using various suspension compositions. Competitive adsorption of PFAAs on the kaolinite surface was observed for the first time, and longer-chained PFAAs outcompeted those with a shorter chain. The electrostatic repulsion between adsorbed PFAA molecules is a primary inhibitory factor in PFAA adsorption. An increase in aqueous sodium or hydrogen ion concentration weakened electrostatic repulsions and changed the adsorption free energy. Therefore, the adsorption of a shorter-chained PFAA with weaker hydrophobicity could occur at high sodium or hydrogen ion concentrations. The experimental and modeling data suggest that the adsorption of shorter-chained PFAAs (≤4 perfluorinated carbons) in freshwater with a typical ionic strength of 10–2.5 is not thermodynamically favorable. Furthermore, by measuring the electrokinetic potential of kaolinite suspension in the presence of PFAAs, we found that the kaolinite surface became more negatively charged because of the adsorption of PFAAs. This observation indicates that the adsorbed PFAA molecules were within the electrical double layer of the kaolinite surface and that they contributed to the potential at the slipping plane. The possible alignments of adsorbed PFAA molecules on the kaolinite surface were then proposed.

This review interprets highway runoff characterization studies performed on different continents. The results are synthesized to discuss the historical trends, first flush effects of pollutants, ...pollutant form as dissolved vs. particulate, and to identify surrogate water quality parameters. The information presented in this review showed that: (1) variability has been observed in all quality parameters from each continent and among continents; (2) with a few exceptions the variability seems to be within the expected range; (3) inconsistent monitoring data as well as inconsistent quality assurance and quality control measures were reported among studies, which may be partially responsible for variability of water quality results; (4) compared with historic data, the concentration of total Pb decreased exponentially, which can mostly be credited to leaded gasoline phase-out regulation; (5) first flush effects of pollutants based on concentration have been reported consistently (however, mass first flush effects for pollutants have been reported inconsistently compared with concentration first flush effect); (6) most metal pollutants and phosphorus are present in both the particulate and dissolved forms; and (7) strong correlations were observed between TSS, TDS, TOC and iron (Fe) and 13 other constituents and water quality parameters (turbidity, O&G, TPH, DOC, TKN, EC, Cl, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn).

A high resolution computational fluid dynamics model is used to simulate a steady air entraining laboratory scale hydraulic jump. A detailed examination of shear layer instabilities reveals the dynamic relationship between spanwise vortices, free surface fluctuations, and air–water spatial patterns. Spanwise vortices generated at the toe roll-up under a variable depth roller, creating large free surface fluctuations through high velocity water ejections in the roller. The mean shear layer elevation and free surface elevations periodically alternate between positive and negative correlation throughout the roller, driven by dynamic vortex transport. Vortices descending towards the lower wall create an upwelling of non-bubbly fluid into the shear layer that contributes to regions of decreased bubble concentration between vortices. The position of a strong shear layer at the location of maximum air entrainment, directly above the jump toe, leads to highly aerated vortices that influence bubble behavior. Bubbles breakup quickly after entrainment at the toe and bubble clusters are observed most frequently below and at the end of the roller where bubble breakup and energy dissipation are diminished. The dominant separation angle of clustered bubbles is independent of downstream distance and aligns closely with the direction of initial shear, suggesting bubble clustering is a remnant of bubble breakup.

This paper presents a methodology based on multivariate data analysis for identifying input sources of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) detected in 37 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) across more ...than 40 cities in the state of Minnesota (USA). Exploratory analysis of data points has been carried out by unsupervised pattern recognition (cluster analysis), correlation analysis, ANOVA and per capita discharges in an attempt to discriminate sources of PFASs in WWTPs. Robust cluster solutions grouped the database according to the different PFAS profiles in WWTP influent. Significantly elevated levels of perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and/or perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in influent have been found in 18 out of 37 WWTPs (49%). A substantial increase in the concentrations of PFHxA and/or PFOA from influent to effluent was observed in 59% of the WWTPs surveyed, suggestive of high concentration inputs of precursors. The fate of one precursor (8:2 fluorotelomer alcohol) in WWTP was modeled based on fugacity analysis to understand the increasing effluent concentration. Furthermore, population-related emissions cannot wholly explain the occurrence and levels of PFASs in WWTPs. Unusually high influent levels of PFASs were observed in WWTPs located in specific industrial areas or where known contamination had taken place. Despite the restriction on the production/use of PFOA and PFOS, this paper demonstrates that wastewater from industrial activities is still a principal determinant of PFAS pollution in urban watersheds.

This paper compares parameters that characterize vegetation flexibility effects on flow resistance and drag. Drag forces have been measured in a flume for simple cylindrical obstructions of the same ...shape and size but with different flexibility under several flow conditions. This data set is used to fit drag parameters and to relate their value to flexibility through the Cauchy Number. A formulation is presented where the drag coefficient is evaluated as a function of a new calibration velocity parameter which is related to the elastic modulus of the obstruction. While the use of a Vogel exponent and reference velocity provides a similar response, the reference velocity when used is somewhat nebulous and appears to have a critical impact on the parameter and the drag force calculated. The proposed formulation for drag reduction is more consistently estimated for the range of flexibilities in this study.

Impervious surfaces are useful indicators of the urbanization impacts on water resources. Effective impervious area (EIA), which is the portion of total impervious area (TIA) that is hydraulically connected to the drainage system, is a better catchment parameter in the determination of actual urban runoff. Development of reliable methods for quantifying EIA rather than TIA is currently one of the knowledge gaps in the rainfall-runoff modeling context. The objective of this study is to improve the rainfall-runoff data analysis method for estimating EIA fraction in urban catchments by eliminating the subjective part of the existing method and by reducing the uncertainty of EIA estimates. First, the theoretical framework is generalized using a general linear least square model and using a general criterion for categorizing runoff events. Issues with the existing method that reduce the precision of the EIA fraction estimates are then identified and discussed. Two improved methods, based on ordinary least square (OLS) and weighted least square (WLS) estimates, are proposed to address these issues. The proposed weighted least squares method is then applied to eleven urban catchments in Europe, Canada, and Australia. The results are compared to map measured directly connected impervious area (DCIA) and are shown to be consistent with DCIA values. In addition, both of the improved methods are applied to nine urban catchments in Minnesota, USA. Both methods were successful in removing the subjective component inherent in the analysis of rainfall-runoff data of the current method. The WLS method is more robust than the OLS method and generates results that are different and more precise than the OLS method in the presence of heteroscedastic residuals in our rainfall-runoff data.
