In this paper, an efficient multi-scale method is presented. Discrete block domains with high mesh resolution are used to resolve fine scale features and the number of the blocks to be solved is kept ...as small as being sufficient for constructing a block–block spatial spectrum. A pointwise spectrum for the blockwise variation is generated for each mesh point on the corresponding block boundaries. These block-to-block spectra provide the required formation for all the block interfaces, and hence enable the fine scale solutions in these solved blocks to be mapped to a large domain simultaneously. The structured blocking also provides a convenient domain division for parallel processing. The method has been implemented in a 3-D time-marching finite volume solver for the Reynolds-averaged compressible Navier–Stokes equations. The double Fourier series is adopted to construct the pointwise spatial spectrum, which is well suited for wall bounded problems where a domain layer with fine scale resolution is required. Several test cases of mass and heat transfer problems have been examined and the results show consistently that the accurate solutions for fine scale domains can be obtained very efficiently with a reduction in degrees of freedom by two orders of magnitude, illustrating the potential of solving complex problems which might currently be intractable.

Leaf chlorophyll is central to the exchange of carbon, water and energy between the biosphere and the atmosphere, and to the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. This paper presents the first ...spatially-continuous view of terrestrial leaf chlorophyll content (ChlLeaf) at the global scale. Weekly maps of ChlLeaf were produced from ENVISAT MERIS full resolution (300 m) satellite data using a two-stage physically-based radiative transfer modelling approach. Firstly, leaf-level reflectance was derived from top-of-canopy satellite reflectance observations using 4-Scale and SAIL canopy radiative transfer models for woody and non-woody vegetation, respectively. Secondly, the modelled leaf-level reflectance was input into the PROSPECT leaf-level radiative transfer model to derive ChlLeaf. The ChlLeaf retrieval algorithm was validated using measured ChlLeaf data from 248 sample measurements at 28 field locations, and covering six plant functional types (PFTs). Modelled results show strong relationships with field measurements, particularly for deciduous broadleaf forests (R2 = 0.67; RMSE = 9.25 μg cm-2; p < 0.001), croplands (R2 = 0.41; RMSE = 13.18 μg cm-2; p < 0.001) and evergreen needleleaf forests (R2 = 0.47; RMSE = 10.63 μg cm-2; p < 0.001). When the modelled results from all PFTs were considered together, the overall relationship with measured ChlLeaf remained good (R2 = 0.47, RMSE = 10.79 μg cm-2; p < 0.001). This result is an improvement on the relationship between measured ChlLeaf and a commonly used chlorophyll-sensitive spectral vegetation index; the MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI; R2 = 0.27, p < 0.001). The global maps show large temporal and spatial variability in ChlLeaf, with evergreen broadleaf forests presenting the highest leaf chlorophyll values, with global annual median values of 54.4 μg cm-2. Distinct seasonal ChlLeaf phenologies are also visible, particularly in deciduous plant forms, associated with budburst and crop growth, and leaf senescence. It is anticipated that this global ChlLeaf product will make an important step towards the explicit consideration of leaf-level biochemistry in terrestrial water, energy and carbon cycle modelling.

Recent findings on wall-bounded turbulence have prompted a new impetus for modelling development to capture and resolve the Reynolds-number-dependent influence of outer flow on near-wall turbulence ...in terms of the ‘foot-printing’ of the large-scale coherent structures and the scale-interaction associated ‘modulation’. We develop a two-scale method to couple a locally embedded near-wall fine-mesh direct numerical simulation (DNS) block with a global coarser mesh domain. The influence of the large-scale structures on the local fine-mesh block is captured by a scale-dependent coarse–fine domain interface treatment. The coarse-mesh resolved disturbances are directly exchanged across the interface, while only the fine-mesh resolved fluctuations around the coarse-mesh resolved variables are subject to periodic conditions in the streamwise and spanwise directions. The global near-wall coarse-mesh region outside the local fine-mesh block is governed by the augmented flow governing equations with forcing source terms generated by upscaling the space–time-averaged fine-mesh solution. The validity and effectiveness of the method are examined for canonical incompressible channel flows at several Reynolds numbers. The mean statistics and energy spectra are in good agreement with the corresponding full DNS data. The results clearly illustrate the ‘foot-printing’ and ‘modulation’ in the local fine-mesh block. Noteworthy also is that neither spectral-gap nor scale-separation is assumed, and a smooth overlap between the global-domain and the local-domain energy spectra is observed. It is shown that the mesh-count scaling with Reynolds number is potentially reduced from $O(R{e^2})$ for the conventional fully wall-resolved large-eddy simulation (LES) to $O(Re)$ for the present locally embedded two-scale LES.
To establish an artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict subsolid nodules (SSNs) before percutaneous core-needle biopsy (PCNB). The results of the two methods were compared to provide ...guidance on the treatment of SSNs.
This was a single-centre retrospective study using data from 1,459 SSNs between 2013 and 2021. The ANN was developed using data from patients who underwent surgery following computed tomography (CT) (SFC) and validated using data from patients who underwent surgery following biopsy (SFB). The prediction results of the ANN for the PCNB group and the histopathological results obtained after biopsy were compared with the histopathological results of lung nodules in the same group after surgery. Additionally, the choice of predictors for PCNB was analysed using multivariate analysis.
There was no significant difference between the accuracies of the ANN and PCNB in the SFB group (p=0.086). The sensitivity of PCNB was lower than that of the ANN (p=0.000), but the specificity was higher (p=0.001). PCNB had better diagnostic ability than the ANN. The incidence of precursor lesions and non-neoplastic lesions in the SFB group was lower than that in the SFC group (p=0.000). A history of malignant tumours, size (2–3 cm), volume (>400 cm3) and mean CT value (≥–450 HU) are important factors for selecting PCNB.
Both ANN and PCNB have comparable accuracy in diagnosing SSNs; however, PCNB has a slightly higher diagnostic ability than ANN. Selecting appropriate patients for PCNB is important for maximising the benefit to SSN patients.

The Pearl River Delta (PRD) region in southeastern China is one of the most polluted industrial and metropolitan areas in the world. We report single‐particle measurements of the refractory black ...carbon (rBC) component in ambient aerosol in the region, and we interpret the results to improve understanding of the importance of rBC for radiative forcing in this region and others like it. A Single‐Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) provided rBC mass loadings, size distributions, and mixing state information. Average rBC loadings are approximately an order of magnitude higher than those measured near Houston, Texas, a major U.S. metropolitan area. The rBC in the PRD is also more often internally mixed with nonrefractory materials than is rBC around Houston. Localized atmospheric heating from rBC solar absorption reached an average rate of 0.4 K d−1. A one‐dimensional discrete ordinates radiative transfer (DISORT) model coupled with the average measured rBC is used to illustrate the potential local contribution of rBC mass and associated scattering aerosol to the radiative forcing. Solar energy deposition rates in the atmosphere at the sampling site due to rBC absorption are estimated to have an average value of 17 W m−2 and be largest in the first 1 km above the ground. These results indicate that rBC has significant potential to influence local meteorology and climate parameters in the PRD region.

Experimental realization of a universal set of quantum logic gates is the central requirement for the implementation of a quantum computer. In an 'all-geometric' approach to quantum computation, the ...quantum gates are implemented using Berry phases and their non-Abelian extensions, holonomies, from geometric transformation of quantum states in the Hilbert space. Apart from its fundamental interest and rich mathematical structure, the geometric approach has some built-in noise-resilience features. On the experimental side, geometric phases and holonomies have been observed in thermal ensembles of liquid molecules using nuclear magnetic resonance; however, such systems are known to be non-scalable for the purposes of quantum computing. There are proposals to implement geometric quantum computation in scalable experimental platforms such as trapped ions, superconducting quantum bits and quantum dots, and a recent experiment has realized geometric single-bit gates in a superconducting system. Here we report the experimental realization of a universal set of geometric quantum gates using the solid-state spins of diamond nitrogen-vacancy centres. These diamond defects provide a scalable experimental platform with the potential for room-temperature quantum computing, which has attracted strong interest in recent years. Our experiment shows that all-geometric and potentially robust quantum computation can be realized with solid-state spin quantum bits, making use of recent advances in the coherent control of this system.

The effects of carbon content on the microstructure and room-temperature mechanical properties of Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 high-entropy alloy (HEA) were systematically investigated. The results showed that ...heavy carbon alloyed HEA could possess supreme combination of high tensile strength (935MPa) and high ductility (~ 74%). The excellent mechanical properties were ascribed to as follows: the high content interstitial carbon atoms strengthens the matrix greatly through suppressing dislocation motion and promoting the deformation-induced twinning at room temperature, which enhance the strength and ductility. Simultaneously, the ductility is further secured for single FCC structure maintained due to appropriate carbon alloying. Our findings provide a novel strategy for developing HEAs with excellent mechanical properties.

Supersymmetry (SUSY) helps solve the hierarchy problem in high-energy physics and provides a natural groundwork for unifying gravity with other fundamental interactions. While being one of the most ...promising frameworks for theories beyond the Standard Model, its direct experimental evidence in nature still remains to be discovered. Here we report experimental realization of a supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM) model, a reduction of the SUSY quantum field theory for studying its fundamental properties, using a trapped ion quantum simulator. We demonstrate the energy degeneracy caused by SUSY in this model and the spontaneous SUSY breaking. By a partial quantum state tomography of the spin-phonon coupled system, we explicitly measure the supercharge of the degenerate ground states, which are superpositions of the bosonic and the fermionic states. Our work demonstrates the trapped-ion quantum simulator as an economic yet powerful platform to study versatile physics in a single well-controlled system.
Metastasis is a major clinical obstacle in the treatment of gastric cancer (GC) and it accounts for the majority of cancer-related mortality. MicroRNAs have recently emerged as regulators of ...metastasis by acting on multiple signaling pathways. In this study, we found that miR-7 is significantly downregulated in highly metastatic GC cell lines and metastatic tissues. Both gain-of-function and loss-of-function experiments showed that increased miR-7 expression significantly reduced GC cell migration and invasion, whereas decreased miR-7 expression dramatically enhanced cell migration and invasion. In vivo metastasis assays also demonstrated that overexpression of miR-7 markedly inhibited GC metastasis. Moreover, the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF1R) oncogene, which is often mutated or amplified in human cancers and functions as an important regulator of cell growth and tumor invasion, was identified as a direct target of miR-7. Silencing of IGF1R using small interefering RNA (siRNA) recapitulated the anti-metastatic function of miR-7, whereas restoring the IGF1R expression attenuated the function of miR-7 in GC cells. Furthermore, we found that suppression of Snail by miR-7, through targeting IGF1R, increased E-cadherin expression and partially reversed the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Finally, analyses of miR-7 and IGF1R levels in human primary GC with matched lymph node metastasis tissue arrays revealed that miR-7 is inversely correlated with IGF1R expression. The present study provides insight into the specific biological behavior of miR-7 in EMT and tumor metastasis. Targeting this novel miR-7/IGF1R/Snail axis would be helpful as a therapeutic approach to block GC metastasis.
