A new species of Megaelosia is described from the Atlantic Forest in the northern part of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Based on examination of topotypic specimens of Megaelosia massarti, this ...species is removed from the synonymy of M. goeldii. Tadpoles of M. lutzae and M. massarti are described and natural history observations of M. massarti and M. goeldii are reported. Diagnoses, measurements, figures, distributional data, and a key for the species of Megaelosia are provided.

This paper reports the construction of a foam nest in a hylid frog identified as Hyla cf rizibilis Bokermann. Although the studied species is morphologically identical to Hyla rizibilis , Bokermann ...(1964, and pers. comm.) observed the typical hylid spawning pattern, without foam, for H. rizibilis . This raises at least two possibilities: these are two sibling species which may differ in breeding habits; or foam nest construction is a local phenomenon. In January 1988, at Ribeirao Branco, Sao Paulo, southeastern Brazil males of Hyla cf rizibilis were observed calling in dense aggregations in a sunny forest clearing during both day and night.

Chiasmocleis leucosticta is a poorly studied species of Neotropical microhylid. Only reports on its vocalization and polyploid karyotype are available in the literature, and its known distribution is ...restricted to the Atlantic Forest in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. This paper reports a new reproductive mode in anurans, the bubble nest, observed in this microhyline frog.

Other essays in this chapter are on amphibian decline and management, landscape ecology, ecotoxicology, importance of museum collections in amphibian conservation, reserve network, population ...manipulations of imperiled species, exotic invading species of fish and amphibians and their impacts on the natural systems, and the importance of natural history in the conservation of amphibians. In the species accounts, account includes (1) historical versus current distribution; (2) historical versus current abundance; (3) life history features, including breeding, eggs, larvae/metamorphosis, juvenile habitat, adult habitat, home range size, territories, aestivation/avoiding desiccation, seasonal migrations, torpor (hibernation), interspecific associations/exclusions, age/size at reproductive maturity, longevity, feeding behavior, predators, anti-predator mechanisms, diseases, and parasites; (4) conservation; (5) a United States distribution map.
