The pioneering paper 'Optical rogue waves' by Solli et al (2007 Nature 450 1054) started the new subfield in optics. This work launched a great deal of activity on this novel subject. As a result, ...the initial concept has expanded and has been enriched by new ideas. Various approaches have been suggested since then. A fresh look at the older results and new discoveries has been undertaken, stimulated by the concept of 'optical rogue waves'. Presently, there may not by a unique view on how this new scientific term should be used and developed. There is nothing surprising when the opinion of the experts diverge in any new field of research. After all, rogue waves may appear for a multiplicity of reasons and not necessarily only in optical fibers and not only in the process of supercontinuum generation. We know by now that rogue waves may be generated by lasers, appear in wide aperture cavities, in plasmas and in a variety of other optical systems. Theorists, in turn, have suggested many other situations when rogue waves may be observed. The strict definition of a rogue wave is still an open question. For example, it has been suggested that it is defined as 'an optical pulse whose amplitude or intensity is much higher than that of the surrounding pulses'. This definition (as suggested by a peer reviewer) is clear at the intuitive level and can be easily extended to the case of spatial beams although additional clarifications are still needed. An extended definition has been presented earlier by N Akhmediev and E Pelinovsky (2010 Eur. Phys. J. Spec. Top. 185 1-4). Discussions along these lines are always useful and all new approaches stimulate research and encourage discoveries of new phenomena. Despite the potentially existing disagreements, the scientific terms 'optical rogue waves' and 'extreme events' do exist. Therefore coordination of our efforts in either unifying the concept or in introducing alternative definitions must be continued. From this point of view, a number of the scientists who work in this area of research have come together to present their research in a single review article that will greatly benefit all interested parties of this research direction. Whether the authors of this 'roadmap' have similar views or different from the original concept, the potential reader of the review will enrich their knowledge by encountering most of the existing views on the subject. Previously, a special issue on optical rogue waves (2013 J. Opt. 15 060201) was successful in achieving this goal but over two years have passed and more material has been published in this quickly emerging subject. Thus, it is time for a roadmap that may stimulate and encourage further research.
Fourier analysis plays a major role in the analysis and understanding of many phenomena in physics and contemporary engineering. However, students, who have often discovered this notion through ...numerical tools do not necessarily understand all the richness that can be derived from joint analysis in the temporal and spectral domains, particularly in the field of optics. As part of the second year of the master's degree in Physics Lasers and Materials at the University of Burgundy, we have set up a series of experiments to highlight these concepts and to show, on a non-trivial example of periodic phase modulation, the precautions to be taken in the interpretation of the various experimentally accessible spectra. This hands-on session, made possible through the use of research infrastructure, is also an introduction to the use of standard optical telecommunications equipment.
Dielectric loaded surface plasmon waveguides (DLSPPWs) comprised of polymer ridges deposited on top of CMOS compatible metal thin films are investigated at telecom wavelengths. We perform a direct ...comparison of the properties of copper (Cu), aluminum (Al), titanium nitride (TiN) and gold (Au) based waveguides by implementing the same plasmonic waveguiding configuration for each metal. The DLSPPWs are characterized by leakage radiation microscopy and a fiber-to-fiber configuration mimicking the cut-back method. We introduce the ohmic loss rate (OLR) to analyze quantitatively the properties of the CMOS metal based DLSPPWs relative to the corresponding Au based waveguides. We show that the Cu, Al and TiN based waveguides feature extra ohmic loss compared to Au of 0.027 dB/μm, 0.18 dB/μm and 0.52 dB/μm at 1550nm respectively. The dielectric function of each metal extracted from ellipsometric spectroscopic measurements is used to model the properties of the DLSP-PWs. We find a fairly good agreement between experimental and modeled DLSPPWs properties except for Al featuring a large surface roughness. Finally, we conclude that TiN based waveguides sustaining intermediate effective index (in the range 1.05-1.25) plasmon modes propagate over very short distances restricting the the use of those modes in practical situations.
Mitochondria are essential for the eukaryotic cell and are derived from the endosymbiosis of an α-proteobacterial ancestor. Compared to other eukaryotes, RNA metabolism in plant mitochondria is ...complex and combines bacterial-like traits with novel features that evolved in the host cell. These complex RNA processes are regulated by families of nucleus-encoded RNA-binding proteins. Transcription is particularly relaxed and is initiated from multiple promoters covering the entire genome. The variety of RNA precursors accumulating in mitochondria highlights the importance of post-transcriptional processes to determine the size and abundance of transcripts. Here we review RNA metabolism in plant mitochondria, from RNA transcription to translation, with a special focus on their unique features that are controlled by trans-factors.

A numerical study on the generation of extreme events in lumped Raman fibre amplifiers is performed. The evolution of continuous or pulsed signals is analysed using cross-correlations, spectra and ...probability density functions. For pulsed signals, the phase evolution is also explored. Both signal and Stokes cascaded waves are considered.
Error-free transmission of 10 Gbit/s non-return to zero optical signals along 2.5 cm long silicon germanium waveguides at a wavelength of 1.98 μm is demonstrated. Bit error rate measurements confirm ...the absence of penalty during the transmission through a subwavelength of 1.3 and 2.2 μm wide waveguides.

The mitochondrial transcription termination factor (mTERF) proteins are nucleic acid binding proteins characterized by degenerate helical repeats of ∼30 amino acids. Metazoan genomes encode a small ...family of mTERF proteins whose members influence mitochondrial gene expression and DNA replication. The mTERF family in higher plants consists of roughly 30 members, which localize to mitochondria or chloroplasts. Effects of several mTERF proteins on plant development and physiology have been described, but molecular functions of mTERF proteins in plants are unknown. We show that a maize mTERF protein, Zm-mTERF4, promotes the splicing of group II introns in chloroplasts. Zm-mTERF4 coimmunoprecipitates with many chloroplast introns and the splicing of some of these introns is disrupted even in hypomorphic Zm-mterf4 mutants. Furthermore, Zm-mTERF4 is found in high molecular weight complexes that include known chloroplast splicing factors. The splicing of two transfer RNAs (trnI-GAU and trnA-UGC) and one ribosomal protein messenger RNA (rpl2) is particularly sensitive to the loss of Zm-mTERF4, accounting for the loss of plastid ribosomes in Zm-mTERF4 mutants. These findings extend the known functional repertoire of the mTERF family to include group II intron splicing and suggest that a conserved role in chloroplast RNA splicing underlies the physiological defects described for mutations in BSM/Rugosa2, the Zm-mTERF4 ortholog in Arabidopsis.
We numerically study the underlying nonlinear dynamics of ultra-broadband optical wavelength converters based on fourth-order scalar modulation instability. Specifically, we demonstrate the ...spontaneous emergence of solitons and trapped radiation waves during the frequency conversion process, leading to significant blue and red spectral expansions. Furthermore, we provide a statistical analysis of both Stokes and anti-Stokes bands, showing their intensity histogram evolution as a function of the propagation toward the L-shape signature typical of rogue events.
