Long-term increases in plasma fibrinogen levels of 1 g/liter are associated with an approximate doubling of risk of major cardiovascular disease outcomes, but causality remains uncertain. To quantify ...cross-sectional associations of fibrinogen levels with established risk factors and other characteristics, the investigators combined individual data on 154,211 apparently healthy adults from 31 prospective studies conducted between 1967 and 2003, using a linear mixed model that included random effects at the cohort level. Fibrinogen levels increased with age and showed continuous, approximately linear relations with several risk markers and slightly curvilinear associations with log triglycerides, albumin, and tobacco and alcohol consumption. Female sex, Black ethnicity, lower socioeconomic status, and alcohol abstinence were each associated with modestly higher fibrinogen levels. Approximately one third of the variation in fibrinogen levels was explained by cohort, age, and sex. An additional 7% was explained by established risk factors (notably, positive associations with smoking and body mass index and an inverse association with high density lipoprotein cholesterol), and a further 10% was explained by inflammatory markers (notably, a positive association with C-reactive protein). The association with body mass index was twice as strong in women as in men, whereas the association with smoking was much stronger in men. These findings substantially advance understanding of the correlates and possible determinants of fibrinogen levels.
An ensemble-based forecast and data assimilation system has been developed for use in Navy aerosol forecasting. The system makes use of an ensemble of the Navy Aerosol Analysis Prediction System ...(ENAAPS) at 1 × 1°, combined with an ensemble adjustment Kalman filter from NCAR's Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART). The base ENAAPS-DART system discussed in this work utilizes the Navy Operational Global Analysis Prediction System (NOGAPS) meteorological ensemble to drive offline NAAPS simulations coupled with the DART ensemble Kalman filter architecture to assimilate bias-corrected MODIS aerosol optical thickness (AOT) retrievals. This work outlines the optimization of the 20-member ensemble system, including consideration of meteorology and source-perturbed ensemble members as well as covariance inflation. Additional tests with 80 meteorological and source members were also performed. An important finding of this work is that an adaptive covariance inflation method, which has not been previously tested for aerosol applications, was found to perform better than a temporally and spatially constant covariance inflation. Problems were identified with the constant inflation in regions with limited observational coverage. The second major finding of this work is that combined meteorology and aerosol source ensembles are superior to either in isolation and that both are necessary to produce a robust system with sufficient spread in the ensemble members as well as realistic correlation fields for spreading observational information. The inclusion of aerosol source ensembles improves correlation fields for large aerosol source regions, such as smoke and dust in Africa, by statistically separating freshly emitted from transported aerosol species. However, the source ensembles have limited efficacy during long-range transport. Conversely, the meteorological ensemble generates sufficient spread at the synoptic scale to enable observational impact through the ensemble data assimilation. The optimized ensemble system was compared to the Navy's current operational aerosol forecasting system, which makes use of NAVDAS-AOD (NRL Atmospheric Variational Data Assimilation System for aerosol optical depth), a 2-D variational data assimilation system. Overall, the two systems had statistically insignificant differences in root-mean-squared error (RMSE), bias, and correlation relative to AERONET-observed AOT. However, the ensemble system is able to better capture sharp gradients in aerosol features compared to the 2DVar system, which has a tendency to smooth out aerosol events. Such skill is not easily observable in bulk metrics. Further, the ENAAPS-DART system will allow for new avenues of model development, such as more efficient lidar and surface station assimilation as well as adaptive source functions. At this early stage of development, the parity with the current variational system is encouraging.
Children affected by differences/disorders of sex development (DSDs) and their families are vulnerable to significant risks across developmental stages that threaten quality of life and psychosocial ...functioning. Accordingly, both experts in DSD treatment and patient advocacy groups have endorsed the incorporation of psychosocial care into interdisciplinary management of DSD conditions.
This study assessed psychosocial needs and received services reported by parents of children with DSD treated at two large US academic medical centers. Specifically, differences in parents' perceptions of psychosocial service needs were compared between those who received or did not receive interdisciplinary care that included psychology/social work professionals.
In a cross-sectional study, sixty-four parents of children with DSD aged 0–19 years attending two major academic centers with interdisciplinary teams completed a questionnaire about their receipt and perception of 12 individual psychosocial services throughout their child's DSD treatment.
Receipt of individual psychosocial services ranged from 27 to 81%. Most commonly, parents reported having a psychosocial provider explain medical terms and answer questions after talking with a doctor (81%), assist with words and terms to describe the condition and treatment (69%), and help navigate the hospital system (63%). Families positively endorsed psychosocial services, with 91–100% of services received rated as helpful. Parents of children who received care as part of an interdisciplinary team were significantly more likely to receive psychosocial services than those treated by single providers (e.g., urologists). Specific gaps in psychosocial care were noted in regard to access to mental health providers familiar with DSD, fertility counseling, and support with community advocacy (e.g., arranging for accommodations at the school or advocating on patient's behalf with the insurance company). Among families who had not received them, services most desired were assistance with words and terms to describe condition or treatment; explanation of medical terms and answering questions after meeting with a doctor; connection to resources such as books, pamphlets, websites, and support groups; and a central care coordinator for the medical team.
Families value psychosocial services but are far less likely to receive services if they are not seen in an interdisciplinary clinic visit that includes a psychosocial provider. Families desire but often lack mental health, advocacy, and fertility-related support. Bit-error-rate (BER) measurements show improvements In the effective receiver sensitivity of 6.2 and 7.0 dB for dispersion shifted fiber (DSF) and silica-core fiber (SCF), respectively. Theoretical predictions of the effective noise figure based on measured fiber parameters indicate improvements of 6.6 dB for DSF and 7.4 dB for SCF in good agreement with the measured optical SNR. The optimum receiver sensitivity is obtained in DSF with less than 600 mW of pump power, whereas the 0.8-dB superior performance of the SCF requires approximately 1 W.
We and other investigators previously reported that isolated nocturnal hypertension on ambulatory measurement (INH) clustered with cardiovascular risk factors and was associated with intermediate ...target organ damage. We investigated whether INH might also predict hard cardiovascular endpoints.
We monitored blood pressure (BP) throughout the day and followed health outcomes in 8711 individuals randomly recruited from 10 populations (mean age 54.8 years, 47.0% women). Of these, 577 untreated individuals had INH (daytime BP <135/85 mmHg and night-time BP ≥120/70 mmHg) and 994 untreated individuals had isolated daytime hypertension on ambulatory measurement (IDH; daytime BP ≥135/85 mmHg and night-time BP <120/70 mmHg). During follow-up (median 10.7 years), 1284 deaths (501 cardiovascular) occurred and 1109 participants experienced a fatal or nonfatal cardiovascular event. In multivariable-adjusted analyses, compared with normotension (n = 3837), INH was associated with a higher risk of total mortality (hazard ratio 1.29, P = 0.045) and all cardiovascular events (hazard ratio 1.38, P = 0.037). IDH was associated with increases in all cardiovascular events (hazard ratio 1.46, P = 0.0019) and cardiac endpoints (hazard ratio 1.53, P = 0.0061). Of 577 patients with INH, 457 were normotensive (<140/90 mmHg) on office BP measurement. Hazard ratios associated with INH with additional adjustment for office BP were 1.31 (P = 0.039) and 1.38 (P = 0.044) for total mortality and all cardiovascular events, respectively. After exclusion of patients with office hypertension, these hazard ratios were 1.17 (P = 0.31) and 1.48 (P = 0.034).
INH predicts cardiovascular outcome in patients who are normotensive on office or on ambulatory daytime BP measurement.
Meta-analyses have been carried out to quantify the effect of dietary vitamin E on α-tocopherol accumulation and on lipid oxidation in porcine
M. longissimus. Published results of 13 (vitamin E ...accumulation) and 10 (lipid oxidation) experiments respectively were used for the analyses. After a number of standardization procedures, a nonlinear relationship was found between the supplementary vitamin E and the accumulation of α-tocopherol in pork which approached a maximum value of 6.4
μg/g tissue. Pork lipid oxidation levels were described in terms of Thiobarbituric Acid Reacting Substances (TBARS) values. The statistical analysis revealed significant effect of vitamin E dose, muscle α-tocopherol concentration and supplementation time on TBARS, resulting in two prediction models for lipid oxidation.
Meta-analysis has proven to be a valuable tool for combining results from previous studies to quantify the effects of dietary vitamin E. Further studies, carried out with standardized experimental protocols would be beneficial for model validation and to increase the predictive power of the derived models.

The present study describes the seminal plasma proteome of Bos indicus bulls. Fifty-six, 24-month old Australian Brahman sires were evaluated and subjected to electroejaculation. Seminal plasma ...proteins were separated by 2-D SDS-PAGE and identified by mass spectrometry. The percentage of progressively motile and morphologically normal sperm of the bulls were 70.4±2.3 and 64±3.2%, respectively. A total of 108 spots were identified in the 2-D maps, corresponding to 46 proteins. Binder of sperm proteins accounted for 55.8% of all spots detected in the maps and spermadhesins comprised the second most abundant constituents. Other proteins of the Bos indicus seminal plasma include clusterin, albumin, transferrin, metalloproteinase inhibitor 2, osteopontin, epididymal secretory protein E1, apolipoprotein A-1, heat shock 70kDa protein, glutathione peroxidase 3, cathelicidins, alpha-enolase, tripeptidyl-peptidase 1, zinc-alpha-2-glycoprotein, plasma serine protease inhibitor, beta 2-microglobulin, proteasome subunit beta type-4, actin, cathepsins, nucleobinding-1, protein S100-A9, hemoglobin subunit alpha, cadherin-1, angiogenin-1, fibrinogen alpha and beta chain, ephirin-A1, protein DJ-1, serpin A3-7, alpha-2-macroglobulin, annexin A1, complement factor B, polymeric immunoglobulin receptor, seminal ribonuclease, ribonuclease-4, prostaglandin-H2 d-isomerase, platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase, and phosphoglycerate kinase 1. In conclusion, this work uniquely portrays the Bos indicus seminal fluid proteome, based on samples from a large set of animals representing the Brahman cattle of the tropical Northern Australia. Based on putative biochemical attributes, seminal proteins act during sperm maturation, protection, capacitation and fertilization.

Mo. It will operate at ∼10 mK in a
cryostat ...currently hosting a similar-scale bolometric array for the
CUORE experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory
(Italy). CUPID will be based on large-volume scintillating
bolometers consisting of
100
Mo-enriched Li
2
MoO
4
crystals,
facing thin Ge-wafer-based bolometric light detectors. In the CUPID
design, the detector structure is novel and needs to be
validated. In particular, the CUORE cryostat presents a high level
of mechanical vibrations due to the use of pulse tubes and the
effect of vibrations on the detector performance must be
investigated. In this paper we report the first test of the
CUPID-design bolometric light detectors with NTD-Ge sensors in a
dilution refrigerator equipped with a pulse tube in an above-ground
lab. Light detectors are characterized in terms of sensitivity,
energy resolution, pulse time constants, and noise power
spectrum. Despite the challenging noisy environment due to
pulse-tube-induced vibrations, we demonstrate that all the four
tested light detectors comply with the CUPID goal in terms of
intrinsic energy resolution of 100 eV RMS baseline noise. Indeed,
we have measured 70–90 eV RMS for the four devices, which show an
excellent reproducibility. We have also obtained high energy
resolutions at the 356 keV line from a
133
Ba source, as good
as Ge semiconductor
γ
detectors in this energy range.
Two experiments investigated the quantitative relationship between dietary fat and fatty acid composition of pork. Experiment 1 was designed to establish the rate of decline for linoleic acid and ...iodine value of pork fat during the late fattening phase following a dietary reduction. Gilts (n = 288) were fed diets varying in linoleic acid content from 4.11 to 1.56% for 4, 6, or 8 wk prior to slaughter. The maximum rate of decline was 2% 18:2 per week and 2.5 iodine value units per week. Experiment 2 evaluated the effects of dietary fat source and level on carcass fatty acid composition and on pork quality characteristics. Barrows (n = 147) and gilts (n = 147) were allocated to seven dietary treatments for the last 6 wk of the finishing phase. Diets contained 0, 2.5, or 5% dietary fat comprised of 100, 50, or 0% beef tallow. The balance was provided by animal-vegetable blended fat. As the level of tallow increased there was a linear decrease (P < 0.05) in 18:2 content and iodine value of carcass fat. Conversely, 16:1 and 18:1 increased linearly (P < 0.05) as tallow increased. However, 16:1 decreased linearly (P < 0.05) as level of fat increased. As the level of tallow was increased a greater reduction in 18:2 and iodine value was observed in diets with 5% dietary fat compared to diets with 2.5% fat (P < 0.05). These results indicate that reduction of dietary PUFA content had the desired effect of lowering 18:2 content and iodine value of pork fat and that significant alterations could be elicited in as little as 6 to 8 wk of feeding.
BACKGROUND
Endometriosis is prevalent and women need high-quality care, which should be patient-centered. This study aimed to develop a valid and reliable patient-centeredness questionnaire, based on ...a defined concept of patient-centered endometriosis care (PCEC).
METHODS
A literature review, focus groups (FGs) with patients and an expert panel defined PCEC with 10 dimensions. The ENDOCARE questionnaire (ECQ) was developed. FGs resulted in 43 specific statements covering the 10 dimensions of PCEC, for which the ECQ measured ‘importance’ and ‘performance’. Medical and demographic questions and an open question were added. The Dutch ECQ questionnaire was piloted and reciprocally translated into English and Italian. Patients with endometriosis from Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy and the UK were invited to complete the ECQ online. Item analysis, inter-item analysis and confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses (EFA) and reliability analysis were performed. The theory-driven dimensions were adapted.
RESULTS
The ECQ was completed by 541 patients. Based on item analysis, five statements were deleted. Factor analysis was performed on 322 questionnaires (only from respondents with a partner). Insights from the data-driven EFA suggested adaptations of the theory-driven dimensions. The reliability statistics of 9/10 adapted theory-driven dimensions were satisfactory and the root mean square error of approximation was good.
CONCLUSIONS
This study resulted in a valid and reliable instrument to measure PCEC. For data presentation, the adapted theory-driven dimensions of PCEC are preferred over the data-driven factors. The ECQ may serve to benchmark patient-centeredness, conduct cross-cultural European research and set targets for improvement.
