This chapter introduces the major themes of the book, beginning with a careful explanation of how ethnographic maps functioned as incredibly effective tools of power by the time of the Paris Peace ...Conference in 1919. It then lays out the three major arguments/areas of historical intervention in the book: 1) that the believability of such maps was not inherent but had to be socially constructed over time; 2) that these changes to the process of seeing nationality on maps played a critical role in radicalizing nationalist practice by the end of the nineteenth century; and 3) that historians should view and interpret images within their material contexts, which is to say they need to think about ways in which their production and circulation affect their discursive meaning
