Background:The increasing incidence of radiation-induced osteosarcoma of the maxilla and mandible(RIOSM) has become a significant problem that can limit long-term survival. The purpose of this study ...was to analyze the association of clinicopathologic characteristics with treatment outcomes and prognostic factors of patients who developed RIOSM after undergoing radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC).Methods:We reviewed the medical records of 53,760 NPC patients admitted to Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center during the period August 1964 to August 2012.Of these patients,47 who developed RISOM and met inclusion criteria were included in this study. Two of these 47 patients refused treatment and were then excluded. Results:For all patients treated for NPC at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center during the study period, the total incidence of RIOSM after radiotherapy was 0.084%(47/53,760).Two patients(4.4%) had metastases at the diagnosis of RIOSM.Thirty-nine of the 45(86.7%) patients underwent surgery for RIOSM;most patients(24/39;61.5%) who underwent resection had gross clear margins, with 15 patients(38.5%) having either a gross or microscopic positive margin. All patients died. The 1-,2-,and 3-year overall survival(OS) rates for the entire cohort of 45 patients were 53.3%,35.6%and 13.5%,respectively.The independent prognostic factors associated with high OS rate were tumor size and treatment type. Conclusions:RISOM after radiotherapy for NPC is aggressive and often eludes early detection and timely intervention.Surgery combined with postoperative chemotherapy might be an effective treatment to improve patient survival.
The electrocardiogram (ECG) has broad applications in clinical diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular disease. Many researchers have contributed to its progressive development. To commemorate ...those pioneers, and to better study and promote the use of ECG, we reviewed and present here a systematic introduction about the history, hotspots, and trends of ECG. In the historical part, information including the invention, improvement, and extensive applications of ECG, such as in long QT syndrome (LQTS), angina, and myocardial infarction (MI), are chronologi- cally presented. New technologies and applications from the 1990s are also introduced. In the second part, we use the bibliometric analysis me- thod to analyze the hotspots in the field of ECG-related research. By using total citations and year-specific total citations as our main criteria, four key hotspots in ECG-related research were identified from 11 articles, including atrial fibrillation, LQTS, angina and MI, and heart rate variability. Recent studies in those four areas are also reported. In the final part, we discuss the future trends concerning ECG-related research. The authors believe that improvement of the ECG instrumentation, big data mining for ECG, and the accuracy of diagnosis and application will be areas of continuous concern.
Aim: To investigate the effect of nitroglycerin (NTG) on cell proliferation and osteoblastic differentiation of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (HBMSC) and its mechanisms. Methods: ...Primary HBMSC were cultured in osteogenic differentiation medium consisting of phenol red-free m-minimum essential media plus 10% fetal bovine serum (dextran-coated charcoal stripped) supplemented with 10 nmol/L dexamethasone, 50 mg/L ascorbic acid, and 10 mmol/L β-glycerophosphate for inducing osteoblastic differentiation. The cells were treated with NTG (0.1-10 μmol/L) alone or concurrent incubation with different nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors. Nitric oxide (NO) production was measured by using a commercial NO kit. Cell proliferation was measured by 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation. The osteoblastic differentiation of HBMSC culture was evaluated by measuring cellular alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and calcium deposition, as well as osteoblastic markers by real-time RT-PCR. Results: The treatment of HBMSC with NTG (0.1-10 μmol/L) led to a dose-dependent increase of NO production in the conditional medium. The release of NO by NTG resulted in increased cell proliferation and osteoblastic differentiation of HBMSC, as evi- denced by the increment of the BrdU incorporation, the induction of ALP activity in the early stage, and the calcium deposition in the latter stage. The increment of NO production was also correlated with the upregulation of osteoblastic markers in HBMSC cultures. However, the stimulatory effect of NTG (10 μmol/L) could not be abolished by either AP-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, an antagonist of endothelial NOS, or 1400W, a selective blocker of inducible NOS activity. Conclusion: NTG stimulates cell proliferation and osteoblastic differentiation of HBMSC through a direct release of NO, which is independent on intracellular NOS activity.

Gene editing in model organisms has provided critical insights into brain development and diseases. Here, we report the generation of a cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) carrying MECP2 ...mutations using transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs)-mediated gene targeting. After injecting TALENs mRNA into monkey zygotes achieved by in vitro fertilization and embryo transplantation into surrogate monkeys, we obtained one male newborn monkey with an MECP2 deletion caused by frame- shifting mutation in various tissues. The monkey carrying the MECP2 mutation failed to survive after birth, due to either the toxicity of TALENs or the critical requirement of MECP2 for neural development. The level of MeCP2 protein was essentially depleted in the monkey's brain. This study demonstrates the feasibility of introducing genetic mutations in non-human primates by site-specific gene-editing methods.

Objective Patients and doctors often have questions about the equivalence of traditional and machinery decoctions. In this article, using Da-cheng-qi Decoction(DCQD) as a model of formula, ...traditional decoction(TD), machinery decoction under high pressure(MDHP), and machinery decoction under normal pressure(MDNP) were compared. Methods For chemical components, HPLC fingerprints were established and evaluated using AHP combined with CRITIC weighing method; For animals' effects, the experiments of small intestinal propulsion were conducted; For clinical effects, a randomized clinical trial(RCT) was designed and performed. Results Although there were some differences between TD and MDNP in chemical ingredients, there was no significant difference in animal experiments and clinical trials(P 〉 0.05). Conclusion The traditional and machinery decoctions of DCQD could be used bioequivalently.

BiOCl nanostructures including microspheres, microflowers, microplates, and nanoplates, have been synthesized by a simple solvothermal method using bismuth nitrate and sodium chloride as raw materials ...without adding any additives.Structure and morphology of the products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicated that the as-prepared microspheres and microflowers were composed of nanosheets.Although with different shape and lateral size, the nanoplates and microplales were all single-crystalline plates with exposed {001) facets. It was found that the volume ratio of polyethylene glycol 400 and H_2O in the solvent played a key role in the morphology of the products, and the possible growth mechanism was also discussed. The photocatalytic measurements indicated that the BiOCl samples exhibit good photocatalytic properties towards Rhodamine B.
