Luteolin (LUT) is a glycosylated flavonoid compound that has multiple beneficial pharmacological and biological impacts. The current investigation was undertaken to evaluate the putative ...neuroprotective potency of LUT against neuronal damage induced by lead acetate (PbAc). Twenty-eight rats were placed into four equal groups. Group 1: served as the control group, group 2: rats were supplemented orally with LUT (50 mg kg−1), group 3: rats were intraperitoneally injected with PbAc (20 mg kg−1), and group 4: rats were pretreated with LUT before PbAc injection with the same doses. All animals were treated for 7 days. The exposure to PbAc increased the concentration of lead in the cortical tissue, neuronal lipid peroxidation, and nitric oxide (NO) production and decreased the antioxidant enzymes. Additionally, PbAc enhanced a neuroinflammatory response in the cortical tissue through increasing the pro-inflammatory cytokines secretion and inducible NO synthase expression. Moreover, cortical cell death was recorded following PbAc intoxication as evidenced by the enhancement of the proapoptotic and inhibiting the antiapoptotic markers. Interestingly, LUT supplementation reversed the cortical adverse reactions induced by PbAc. Taken together, these findings may suggest that LUT may be useful for attenuating neuronal damage induced by PbAc through inhibiting the oxidative damage, neuroinflammation, and the cortical cell death.

Currently, the conversion of biomass to produce high-valued biofuels such as biodiesel and bio-jet fuel has attached booming interests, when used for partial replacement of petroleum fuels ...in different ratios is a promising solution due to the problem of depleting petroleum reserves and environmental purposes. Non-edible Jatropha oil can be transformed to biofuel when subjected to were hydrocracking at hydrogen pressure using an activated natural clay as a catalyst in a high pressure batch reactor. The type of product and its quality and quantity depend on the process conditions such as reaction time, temperature, and catalyst type, form, and amount. The present work aims to study the hydrocracking process of Jatropha oil at different operating conditions. The catalyst is characterized using SEM, FTIR, XRF, and XRD. The effect of process conditions variation have been studied and discussed. The results showed the highest yield of 40% bio-jet fuel was achieved at a temperature of 350 °C, H

pressure of 4 bar, and reaction time of 18 min. the bio-jet fuel products were tested and their specifications were conformed to ASTM D1655 specifications, viz the freezing point (−56 °C), the flash point (53 °C), and existent gum content (5.9 mg/100 ml).

IMPORTANCE: Methotrexate and mycophenolate mofetil are commonly used immunomodulatory therapies for achieving corticosteroid-sparing control of noninfectious uveitis, but there is uncertainty about ...which drug is more effective. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of methotrexate and mycophenolate for achieving corticosteroid-sparing control of noninfectious intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, and panuveitis. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The First-line Antimetabolites as Steroid-sparing Treatment (FAST) uveitis trial screened 265 adults with noninfectious uveitis requiring corticosteroid-sparing immunosuppressive therapy from 9 referral eye centers in India, the United States, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico between August 22, 2013, and August 16, 2017. Follow-up ended on August 20, 2018. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were randomized to receive oral methotrexate, 25 mg weekly (n = 107), or oral mycophenolate mofetil, 3 g daily (n = 109). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary outcome was treatment success at 6 months, which was defined as having control of inflammation in both eyes, no more than 7.5 mg prednisone daily and less than or equal to 2 drops of prednisolone acetate 1%, and no treatment failure due to safety or intolerability. Patients underwent follow-up to 12 months while receiving the same treatment or switched to the other antimetabolite, depending on their 6-month outcome. RESULTS: Among 216 patients who were randomized (median age, 38 years; 135 (62.5%) women), 194 (89.8%) completed follow-up through 6 months. Treatment success occurred in 64 (66.7%) patients in the methotrexate group vs 56 (57.1%) in the mycophenolate group (difference, 9.5% 95% CI, −5.3% to 21.8%; odds ratio OR, 1.50 95% CI, 0.81 to 2.81; P = .20). Among patients with posterior uveitis or panuveitis, treatment success was achieved in 58 (74.4%) in the methotrexate group vs 42 (55.3%) in the mycophenolate group (difference, 19.1% 95% CI, 3.6% to 30.6%; OR, 2.35 95% CI, 1.16 to 4.90; P = .02); whereas among patients with intermediate uveitis treatment success occurred in 6 (33.3%) in the methotrexate group vs 14 (63.6%) in the mycophenolate group (difference, −30.3% 95% CI, −51.6% to 1.1%; OR, 0.29 95% CI, 0.08 to 1.05; P = .07; P for interaction = .004). Elevated liver enzymes were the most common nonserious laboratory adverse event, occurring in 14 patients (13.0%) in the methotrexate group and 8 patients (7.4%) in the mycophenolate group. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Among adults with noninfectious uveitis, the use of mycophenolate mofetil compared with methotrexate as first-line corticosteroid-sparing treatment did not result in superior control of inflammation. Early detection improves hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) outcomes, but better noninvasive surveillance tools are needed. We aimed to identify and validate methylated DNA markers (MDMs) for HCC ...detection. Reduced representation bisulfite sequencing was performed on DNA extracted from 18 HCC and 35 control tissues. Candidate MDMs were confirmed by quantitative methylation‐specific PCR in DNA from independent tissues (74 HCC, 29 controls). A phase I plasma pilot incorporated quantitative allele‐specific real‐time target and signal amplification assays on independent plasma‐extracted DNA from 21 HCC cases and 30 controls with cirrhosis. A phase II plasma study was then performed in 95 HCC cases, 51 controls with cirrhosis, and 98 healthy controls using target enrichment long‐probe quantitative amplified signal (TELQAS) assays. Recursive partitioning identified best MDM combinations. The entire MDM panel was statistically cross‐validated by randomly splitting the data 2:1 for training and testing. Random forest (rForest) regression models performed on the training set predicted disease status in the testing set; median areas under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUCs; and 95% confidence interval CI) were reported after 500 iterations. In phase II, a six‐marker MDM panel (homeobox A1 HOXA1, empty spiracles homeobox 1 EMX1, AK055957, endothelin‐converting enzyme 1 ECE1, phosphofructokinase PFKP, and C‐type lectin domain containing 11A CLEC11A) normalized by beta‐1,3‐galactosyltransferase 6 (B3GALT6) level yielded a best‐fit AUC of 0.96 (95% CI, 0.93‐0.99) with HCC sensitivity of 95% (88%‐98%) at specificity of 92% (86%‐96%). The panel detected 3 of 4 (75%) stage 0, 39 of 42 (93%) stage A, 13 of 14 (93%) stage B, 28 of 28 (100%) stage C, and 7 of 7 (100%) stage D HCCs. The AUC value for alpha‐fetoprotein (AFP) was 0.80 (0.74‐0.87) compared to 0.94 (0.9‐0.97) for the cross‐validated MDM panel (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: MDMs identified in this study proved to accurately detect HCC by plasma testing. Further optimization and clinical testing of this promising approach are indicated.

Radio frequency plasma, RF plasma, has been applied to a number of industrial applications. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the RF plasma potential in Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) ...control. Three treatment variables: (1) helium or argon plasmas; (2) two power levels (50 and 100 watt); and (3) different RF plasma exposure times (0, 20, 40, 60 and 90 seconds) were examined in this study. The susceptibility of T. castaneum to treatment varies as gas, power level, and the exposure time varies. A positive correlation was found between insect mortality percent in treating larvae as well as treated pupae and exposure time to RF plasma and also the power level of irradiation. The results revealed that no live insects were found after a 90 second, 100 watt helium RF plasma treatment. The survival percents of the adults were developed from treated larvae and treated pupae were significantly reduced by increasing of the exposure time or power level. Obtained data indicated that the treatment with RF plasma might be considered as an environmentally compatible or alternative supplement to the other control methods for stored product-pests management.
Biogas consisting of carbon dioxide/methane (CO2/CH4) gas mixtures has emerged as an alternative renewable fuel to natural gas. The presence of CO2 can decrease the calorific value and generate ...greenhouse gas. Hence, separating CO2 from CH4 is a vital step in enhancing the use of biogas. Zeolite and zeolite-based mixed matrix membrane (MMM) is considered an auspicious candidate for CO2/CH4 separation due to thermal and chemical stability. This review initially addresses the development of zeolite and zeolite-based MMM for the CO2/CH4 separation. The highest performance in terms of CO2 permeance and CO2/CH4 selectivity was achieved using zeolite and zeolite-based MMM, which exhibited CO2 permeance in the range of 2.0 × 10− 7–7.0 × 10− 6 mol m− 2 s− 1 Pa− 1 with CO2/CH4 selectivity ranging from 3 to 300. Current trends directed toward improving CO2/CH4 selectivity via modification methods including post-treatment, ion-exchanged, amino silane-grafted, and ionic liquid encapsulated of zeolite-based MMM. Those modification methods improved the defect-free and interfacial adhesions between zeolite particulates and polymer matrices and subsequently enhanced the CO2/CH4 selectivity. The modifications via ionic liquid and silane methods more influenced the CO2/CH4 selectivity with 90 and 660, respectively. This review also focuses on the possible applications of zeolite-based MMM, which include the purification and treatment of water as well as biomedical applications. Lastly, future advances and opportunities for gas separation applications are also briefly discussed. This review aims to share knowledge regarding zeolite-based MMM and inspire new industrial applications.

Despite decades of research, metallic corrosion remains a long‐standing challenge in many engineering applications. Specifically, designing a material that can resist corrosion both in abiotic as ...well as biotic environments remains elusive. Here a lightweight sulfur–selenium (S–Se) alloy is designed with high stiffness and ductility that can serve as an excellent corrosion‐resistant coating with protection efficiency of ≈99.9% for steel in a wide range of diverse environments. S–Se coated mild steel shows a corrosion rate that is 6–7 orders of magnitude lower than bare metal in abiotic (simulated seawater and sodium sulfate solution) and biotic (sulfate‐reducing bacterial medium) environments. The coating is strongly adhesive, mechanically robust, and demonstrates excellent damage/deformation recovery properties, which provide the added advantage of significantly reducing the probability of a defect being generated and sustained in the coating, thus improving its longevity. The high corrosion resistance of the alloy is attributed in diverse environments to its semicrystalline, nonporous, antimicrobial, and viscoelastic nature with superior mechanical performance, enabling it to successfully block a variety of diffusing species.
S–Se is demonstrated as a universal anticorrosive coating, which is easily processed, mechanically robust, and effective in biotic and abiotic environments. S–Se coatings are effective due to their unique combination of properties, including insulating and impermeable nature, viscoelasticity, and intrinsic antimicrobial properties. The coating also exhibits an ability to recover defects and damage with minimal intervention.

Landfill has become an underlying source of surface and groundwater pollution if not efficiently managed, due to the risk of leachate infiltration into to land and aquifers. The generated leachate is ...considered a serious environmental threat for the public health, because of the toxic and recalcitrant nature of its constituents. Thus, it must be collected and appropriately treated before being discharged into the environment. At present, there is no single unit process available for proper leachate treatment as conventional wastewater treatment processes cannot achieve a satisfactory level for degrading toxic substances present. Therefore, there is a growing interest in examination of different leachate treatment processes for maximum operational flexibility. Based on leachate characteristics, discharge requirements, technical possibilities, regulatory requirements and financial considerations, several techniques have been applied for its degradation, presenting varying degrees of efficiency. Therefore, this article presents a comprehensive review of existing research articles on the pros and cons of various leachate degradation methods. In line with environmental sustainability, the article stressed on the application and efficiency of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system treating landfill leachate due to its operational flexibility, resistance to shock loads and high biomass retention. Contributions of integrated leachate treatment technologies with SBR were also discussed. The article further analyzed the effect of different adopted materials, processes, strategies and configurations on leachate treatment. Environmental and operational parameters that affect SBR system were critically discussed. It is believed that information contained in this review will increase readers fundamental knowledge, guide future researchers and be incorporated into future works on experimentally-based SBR studies for leachate treatment.

129I and 79Se are potentially important anionic radionuclides in safety assessments due to their high mobility, radiotoxicity, and long half life's (1.7 × 107 and 3.27 × 105 years, respectively). ...This study is interested in the sorption of 131I and 75Se radionuclides onto magnesium iron hydrotalcite (Mg/Fe HTlc). Mg/Fe HTlc was prepared by co-precipitation technique and characterized using different analytical tools such as FT-IR, XRD, XRF, TGA & DTA, SEM, and BET. Results obtained from this study showed that the adsorption process was a very fast equilibrium time (20 min). The distribution coefficient values as a function of pH have high separation factors for 131I at all different pHs. Reaction kinetic obeys the pseudo-second-order model. Maximum sorption capacity for 131I and 75Se has the values 21.45, and 9.25 mg/g respectively. Sorption isotherms are more relevant to a Langmuir isotherm. The % removal of 131I is decreased by increasing the concentration of competing species. The investigation evidenced that the prepared sorbent is suitable for the removal of 131I and 75Se from radioactive waste and could be considered potential material for purification of effluent polluted with these radionuclides.

We report experimental evidence for a Rayleigh-Taylor-like instability driven by radiation pressure of an ultraintense (10(21) W/cm(2)) laser pulse. The instability is witnessed by the highly ...modulated profile of the accelerated proton beam produced when the laser irradiates a 5 nm diamondlike carbon (90% C, 10% H) target. Clear anticorrelation between bubblelike modulations of the proton beam and transmitted laser profile further demonstrate the role of the radiation pressure in modulating the foil. Measurements of the modulation wavelength, and of the acceleration from Doppler-broadening of back-reflected light, agree quantitatively with particle-in-cell simulations performed for our experimental parameters and which confirm the existence of this instability.
