A series of numerical simulations were performed to investigate the influence of side free surface on the rock fragmentation induced by single TBM disc cutter. The JH-2 model combined with a Rankine ...tensile cracking softening model was adopted to define the rock constitutive model to simulate the rock dynamic fracture process. The distance that allows for cracks just to extend to side free surface under a given penetration is defined as the critical distance, which distinguishes the rock fragmentation patterns between induced by disc cutter close to side free surface and conventional single cutter. The former rock fragmentation pattern is that rock chips in the form of wedge-shaped block spalling from rock specimen due to tensile cracks intersection. From the mean rolling force and the rock debris mass, the specific energy to reflect cutting efficiency was calculated for different distances to side free surface. The cutting efficiencies of former patterns are far higher that by conventional single cutter. The rock macro-fracture patterns and cutting efficiency were then compared with those obtained from linear cutting experiments. The critical distance for Baiyun granite is about 100mm obtained from experiments, in good agreement with that deduced from numerical simulations. The height difference between the inner and outer cutterhead of the two-stage cutterhead should be more than 220mm and the distance from first disc cutter on the inner cutterhead to free surface should be less than 100mm for granite ground.

The Isa smelting furnace discharges the matte and slag in the same tapping hole. As a result, an electric furnace needs to clean the slag. In the present study, the copper slag cleaning in an ...electric furnace, particularly the separation of the matte from the slag during the reduction process, was investigated. For Fe3O4 to FeO, the foaming slag in the melt disappeared when the Fe3O4 content was less than 10%. With the formation of the metallic iron, the foaming slag formed again, hindering the sedimentation of the matte. When the anthracite dosage increased to 2.61%, the copper content in the slag increased to 9.46%. The microstructure of the slag and the existence of the metallic iron found in the slag were analyzed in detail. The results obtained in this study provide a theoretical basis for the reasonable control of the transformation of Fe3O4 during the copper slag cleaning.

Four isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets containing fresh fish oil (peroxide value, POV: 11.5 meq kg−1, diet FR) and three degrees of oxidized fish oil (POV: 132, 277 and 555 meq kg−1, diet OX132, ...OX277 and OX555, respectively) were formulated to investigate the effects of dietary oxidized fish oil on growth performance, body composition, antioxidant defence mechanism and liver histology of juvenile largemouth bass. After a 12‐week feeding trail, a proportion of approximately 9% of Micropterus salmoides showed inflammation and haemorrhage at the base of dorsal, pectoral and tail fin in both groups OX277 and OX555. Fish fed oxidized oil diets obtained significantly higher (P < 0.05) weight gain and specific growth rate because of their remarkable higher feed intakes, compared with the fresh oil receiving group. The analysis of biometric parameters and body composition indicated significant differences (P < 0.05) in various test diets. The activities of hepatic catalase and superoxide dismutase were significantly stimulated (P < 0.05) by oxidized oil ingestion. Hepatic glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione‐S‐transferase activities were significantly higher (P < 0.05), and liver glutathione content was markedly lower (P < 0.05) in group OX555 than the other treatments. Oxidized oil consumption resulted in marked depletion (P < 0.05) of vitamin E concentration in plasma, liver and muscle tissue, increased plasma and muscle malondialdehyde content along with decreased haematocrit value. Histological examinations indicated that hepatocytes with lipid vacuoles and nuclear migration were shown in groups OX277 and OX555. The overall results in this study suggested that an increased oxidative stress in M. salmoides fed oxidized lipid may account for their stimulated hepatic antioxidant defences, vitamin E depletion in plasma and certain tissues, and pathological changes. The detrimental effect of oxidation products on fish health and the unexpectedly enhanced feed intake of oxidized feeds in M. salmoides underline the importance that cares should be taken to minimize dietary oxidation products to the greatest extent possible.

Self-renewal of patient glioma cells was evaluated using clonogenic, viability, and invasiveness assays. ST3GAL1 was identified from differentially expressed genes in Peanut Agglutinin-stained cells and validated in REMBRANDT (n = 390) and Gravendeel (n = 276) clinical databases. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed upstream processes. TGFβ signaling on ST3GAL1 transcription was assessed using chromatin immunoprecipitation. Transcriptome analysis of ST3GAL1 knockdown cells was done to identify downstream pathways. A constitutively active FoxM1 mutant lacking critical anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C-Cdh1) binding sites was used to evaluate ST3Gal1-mediated regulation of FoxM1 protein. Finally, the prognostic role of ST3Gal1 was determined using an orthotopic xenograft model (3 mice groups comprising nontargeting and 2 clones of ST3GAL1 knockdown in NNI-11 8 per group and NNI-21 6 per group), and the correlation with patient clinical information. All statistical tests on patients' data were two-sided; other P values below are one-sided.
High ST3GAL1 expression defines an invasive subfraction with self-renewal capacity; its loss of function prolongs survival in a mouse model established from mesenchymal NNI-11 (P < .001; groups of 8 in 3 arms: nontargeting, C1, and C2 clones of ST3GAL1 knockdown). ST3GAL1 transcriptomic program stratifies patient survival (hazard ratio HR = 2.47, 95% confidence interval CI = 1.72 to 3.55, REMBRANDT P = 1.92 x 10⁻⁸; HR = 2.89, 95% CI = 1.94 to 4.30, Gravendeel P = 1.05 x 10⁻¹¹), independent of age and histology, and associates with higher tumor grade and T2 volume (P = 1.46 x 10⁻⁴). TGFβ signaling, elevated in mesenchymal patients, correlates with high ST3GAL1 (REMBRANDT gliomacor = 0.31, P = 2.29 x 10⁻¹⁰; Gravendeel gliomacor = 0.50, P = 3.63 x 10⁻²⁰). The transcriptomic program upon ST3GAL1 knockdown enriches for mitotic cell cycle processes. FoxM1 was identified as a statistically significantly modulated gene (P = 2.25 x 10⁻⁵) and mediates ST3Gal1 signaling via the (APC/C)-Cdh1 complex.
The ST3GAL1-associated transcriptomic program portends poor prognosis in glioma patients and enriches for higher tumor grades of the mesenchymal molecular classification. We show that ST3Gal1-regulated self-renewal traits are crucial to the sustenance of glioblastoma multiforme growth.
In order to investigate the effects of lysine and dissolved oxygen on grass carp, the grass carp were fed with 13, 15 and 17 g kg −1 lysine diet at about 6 mg L−1 (high dissolved oxygen, HO group) or ...3.5 mg L−1 (low dissolved oxygen, LO group) dissolved oxygen level, for 8 weeks. The fish were fed to apparent satiation by hand. The results showed that apparent digestibility of protein, energy and dry matter were decreased significantly when grass carp were fed at 3.5 mg L−1 dissolved oxygen, and feed intake (FI) was also inhibited by low dissolved oxygen (P < 0.05). Weight gain, protein retention, protein efficiency, feed conversion ratio and amino acid retention of fish at 6 mg L−1 dissolved oxygen level were significantly improved at 3.5 mg L−1 dissolved oxygen level (P < 0.05). Weight gain, protein and amino acid retention, and feed efficiency of grass carp at the two dissolved oxygen levels were significantly improved by lysine supplementation (P < 0.05). The dietary lysine level and dissolved oxygen of water had an interaction effect on feed conversion ratios (P < 0.05). Grass carp fed at low dissolved oxygen level showed lower liver protein and fat contents. Plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity of grass carp fed at 3.5 mg L−1 dissolved oxygen level was significantly increased compared to 6 mg L−1 dissolved oxygen level (P < 0.05). Our results show that low dissolved oxygen level of water is harmful to the liver of grass carp.

The selective and sensitive detection of Al( iii ) is critically important for human health since the level of Al( iii ) is an indicator of many diseases in humans. Herein, we developed a simple and ...sensitive fluorescent sensor for the detection of Al( iii ) in an aqueous solution based on the fluorescence of hydroxyl-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (HO/g-CN). OH/g-CN nanosheets were synthesized via the thermal pyrolysis of 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine (as raw material) at 550 °C for 2 hours, followed by thermal alkali treatment at 730 °C for 2 min. The fluorescence of HO/g-CN at 377 nm (at 290 nm excitation) can be quenched by Al( iii ) effectively and selectively, and the linear relationship between the concentration of Al( iii ) and fluorescence intensity is in the range of 1.85–14.82 μM with a detection limit of 0.272 μM. The fluorescence turn-off effect of the Al( iii ) ion on the prepared HO/g-CN nanosheets could be attributed to the presence of oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups on the surface of HO/g-CN that have chelating interactions with Al( iii ), leading to quenching. The surface functional groups of OH/g-CN were confirmed using different characterization techniques (FTIR, EDX, and XPS). Moreover, the prepared HO/g-CN exhibited remarkable long-term fluorescence stability in water (>30 days) and minimal toxicity. Importantly, a prepared novel fluorescent sensor (HO/g-CN) was successfully applied for the detection and determination of Al( iii ) in commercially available crab (Brachyura) samples.
Polymer electrolytes are the subject of intensive study, in part because of their potential use as the electrolyte in all-solid-state rechargeable lithium batteries. These materials are formed by ...dissolving a salt (for example LiI) in a solid host polymer such as poly(ethylene oxide) (refs 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), and may be prepared as both crystalline and amorphous phases. Conductivity in polymer electrolytes has long been viewed as confined to the amorphous phase above the glass transition temperature, Tg, where polymer chain motion creates a dynamic, disordered environment that plays a critical role in facilitating ion transport. Here we show that, in contrast to this prevailing view, ionic conductivity in the static, ordered environment of the crystalline phase can be greater than that in the equivalent amorphous material above Tg. Moreover, we demonstrate that ion transport in crystalline polymer electrolytes can be dominated by the cations, whereas both ions are generally mobile in the amorphous phase. Restriction of mobility to the lithium cation is advantageous for battery applications. The realization that order can promote ion transport in polymers is interesting in the context of electronically conducting polymers, where crystallinity favours electron transport.

Precise interferometric measurement is vital to many scientific and technological applications. Using quantum entanglement allows interferometric sensitivity that surpasses the shot-noise limit ...(SNL). To date, experiments demonstrating entanglement-enhanced sub-SNL interferometry, and most theoretical treatments, have addressed the goal of increasing signal-to-noise ratios. This is suitable for phase-sensing--detecting small variations about an already known phase. However, it is not sufficient for ab initio phase-estimation--making a self-contained determination of a phase that is initially completely unknown within the interval 0, 2π). Both tasks are important, but not equivalent. To move from the sensing regime to the ab initio estimation regime requires a non-trivial phase-estimation algorithm. Here, we implement a 'bottom-up' approach, optimally utilizing the available entangled photon states, obtained by post-selection. This enables us to demonstrate sub-SNL ab initio estimation of an unknown phase by entanglement-enhanced optical interferometry.

The debate on the relationship between corporate or industrial environmental performance (EP) and financial performance (FP) has yet to be resolved, and studies need to examine the possible ...moderating effects on the EP-FP link. We argue that industrial EP has a positive effect on FP and that industrial munificence and resource slack can moderate the EP-FP link. Using a dataset from Chinese industrial firms, we examine the direct effect of industrial EP on FP and the indirect effects of industrial munificence and resource slack on the EP-FP link. Our results show that improving corporate or industrial-level EP significantly influences FP and that slack resources play a significant role on the EP-FP link. However, we found no significant moderating effect of industrial munificence on the link.
