Abstract
The radiation dose rate from radionuclides released by the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho, Japan, was assessed for a year specified in the safety review during which the ...weather conditions were not significantly different from those of the other 10 y. However, the actual year-by-year variation in annual radiation dose rate was not examined. A model system for evaluating the dose rate from the radionuclides released into the atmosphere was constructed. In this study, the radiation dose rate in the weather conditions of 24 weather bins was estimated for a standard year by the model. The annual maximum dose rate from 1959 to 2012 was estimated using a simplified method that integrated the dose rates of each weather bin in the standard year by estimating the annual frequency of the bin in the target year. We obtained ~1.3 as the maximum/minimum ratio of the annual maximum dose rate.
Lactobacillus reuteri is a heterofermentative lactic acid bacterium that naturally inhabits the gut of humans and other animals. The probiotic effects of L. reuteri have been proposed to be largely ...associated with the production of the broad-spectrum antimicrobial compound reuterin during anaerobic metabolism of glycerol. We determined the complete genome sequences of the reuterin-producing L. reuteri JCM 1112T and its closely related species Lactobacillus fermentum IFO 3956. Both are in the same phylogenetic group within the genus Lactobacillus. Comparative genome analysis revealed that L. reuteri JCM 1112T has a unique cluster of 58 genes for the biosynthesis of reuterin and cobalamin (vitamin B12). The 58-gene cluster has a lower GC content and is apparently inserted into the conserved region, suggesting that the cluster represents a genomic island acquired from an anomalous source. Two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-NMR) with 13C3-glycerol demonstrated that L. reuteri JCM 1112T could convert glycerol to reuterin in vivo, substantiating the potential of L. reuteri JCM 1112T to produce reuterin in the intestine. Given that glycerol is shown to be naturally present in feces, the acquired ability to produce reuterin and cobalamin is an adaptive evolutionary response that likely contributes to the probiotic properties of L. reuteri.
Abstract
The behaviour of I in soil depends on its chemical form in soil solution. Stable I (127I) in the soil solution under actual soil conditions was investigated as a natural analogue of ...long-lived radioiodine (129I). Soil samples were collected at 5-cm depth intervals down to 20 cm from forests and grasslands in Rokkasho, where the Japanese first commercial nuclear fuel reprocessing plant is located, and the soil solution was extracted by centrifugation. Almost half of total I in the soil solution was iodide, and the other half was dissolved organic I (DOI), with iodate under the detection limit. The proportion of DOI in total I at 0–5 cm depth was larger than the proportions at 5–20 cm depth. The concentration of DOI was positively correlated with that of DOC in the soil solution, suggesting that the behaviour of DOI in the surface soil is affected by labile organic matter dynamics.
Information about the chemical form of exogenous iodine in soil is important for predicting the mobility and behaviour of radioiodine in the terrestrial environment. In this study, soil samples ...collected at various depths in a pine forest in Rokkasho, Japan, were spiked with stable iodine (as iodide or iodate); after incubation of the spiked soils for 1 or 14 d, the chemical forms of iodine were investigated in both the soils and their water extracts. In surface soil and its extracts, inorganic iodine was found to have been transformed to organically bound forms after incubation for 14 d, resulting in a decrease in the amount of water-extractable iodine in the soil. In contrast, in subsurface soil, which had low organic matter content, the predominant chemical form of iodine after incubation did not differ from that in the spiked soil, and the amount of water-extractable iodine did not decrease noticeably.
The spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant of Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited (JNFL) located in Rokkasho, Japan, discharged small amounts of (85)Kr into the atmosphere during final tests of the plant with ...actual spent fuel from 31 March 2006 to October 2008. During this period, the gamma-ray dose rates due to discharged (85)Kr were higher than the background rates measured at the Institute for Environmental Sciences and at seven monitoring stations of the Aomori prefectural government and JNFL. The dispersion of (85)Kr was simulated by means of the fifth-generation Penn State/NCAR Mesoscale Model and the CG-MATHEW/ADPIC models (ver. 5.0) with a vertical terrain-following height coordinate. Although the simulated gamma-ray dose rates due to discharged (85)Kr agreed fairly well with measured rates, the agreement between the estimated monthly mean (85)Kr concentrations and the observed concentrations was poor. Improvement of the vertical flow of air may lead to better estimation of (85)Kr dispersion.
Tritium ((3)H) concentrations were measured in groundwater samples from four surface wells (4-10 m deep), four shallow wells (24-26.5 m deep) and a 150-m-deep well in the Futamata River catchment ...area, which is adjacent to the large-scale commercial spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho, Japan. The (3)H concentrations in most of the surface- and shallow-well samples (<0.03-0.57 Bq l(-1)) were similar to those in precipitation (annual mean: 0.31-0.79 Bq l(-1)), suggesting that the residence time of the water in those wells was 0-15 y. The (3)H concentrations in the samples from a 26-m-deep well and the 150-m-deep well were lower than those in the other wells, indicating that groundwater with a long residence time exists in deep aquifers and the estuary area of the catchment. It is not clear whether (3)H released during test operation of the plant with actual spent nuclear fuel affected the (3)H concentrations observed in this study.
The spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho, Japan, has been undergoing final testing since March 2006. During April 2006-October 2008, that spent fuel was cut and chemically processed, the ...plant discharged (129)I into the atmosphere and coastal waters. To study (129)I behaviour in brackish Lake Obuchi, which is adjacent to the plant, (129)I concentrations in aquatic biota were measured by accelerator mass spectrometry. Owing to (129)I discharge from the plant, the (129)I concentration in the biota started to rise from the background concentration in 2006 and was high during 2007-08. The (129)I concentration has been rapidly decreasing after the fuel cutting and chemically processing were finished. The (129)I concentration factors in the biota were higher than those reported by IAEA for marine organisms and similar to those reported for freshwater biota. The estimated annual committed effective dose due to ingestion of foods with the maximum (129)I concentration in the biota samples was 2.8 nSv y(-1).
We are developing a superconducting camera based on microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) to observe 100-GHz continuum with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. A data acquisition (DAQ) system for ...the camera has been designed to operate the MKIDs with the telescope. This system is required to connect the telescope control system (COSMOS) to the readout system of the MKIDs (MKID DAQ) which employs the frequency-sweeping probe scheme. The DAQ system is also required to record the reference signal of the beam switching for the demodulation by the analysis pipeline in order to suppress the sky fluctuation. The system has to be able to merge and save all data acquired both by the camera and by the telescope, including the cryostat temperature and pressure and the telescope pointing. A collection of software which implements these functions and works as a TCP/IP server on a workstation was developed. The server accepts commands and observation scripts from COSMOS and then issues commands to MKID DAQ to configure and start data acquisition. We made a commissioning of the MKID camera on the Nobeyama 45-m telescope and obtained successful scan signals of the atmosphere and of the Moon.
Rice grain samples and surface paddy soil samples were collected from 20 sites throughout Aomori Prefecture, Japan, and the concentrations of 25 elements in the polished rice and 33 elements in the ...soils were determined by neutron activation analysis, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer or atomic adsorption spectrometer. The range of essential element concentrations in the polished rice was within one order of magnitude, however, the range for most of the trace elements was more than one order of magnitude. The range of element concentrations, except for I, in the paddy soils was within one order of magnitude. The +/-95% confidence intervals of the soil-to-polished rice transfer factors for all elements, except for Pb, were within two orders of magnitude, and the geometric mean values were as follows: Cl, Mo and Zn (0.1-1); K, Cu, Cd, Rb, Mg, Mn, and Ag (0.01-0.1); Ni, As, Ca, Se and 1(0.001-0.01); Na, Cs, Sr, Co, Cr, V, Ba, Pb, Fe and Al ( < 0.001).
