The properties of final modules of a high resolution lead/scintillating-fibre calorimeter to upgrade the backward region of the H1 detector were studied with electrons in the energy range from 2–60 ...GeV. The electromagnetic calorimeter consists of scintillating fibres with a diameter of 0.5 mm embedded in a lead matrix. This small fibre radius, in combination with a lead-to-fibre ratio of 2.27:1, ensures excellent energy resolution which has been measured to be
δ/E=7.1%/
E/GeV
⊕ 1.0%
. The spatial resolution as a function of energy for impact points at the center of a cell is given by
4.4 mm/
E/GeV
+ 1.0 mm
. The time resolution was found to be better than 0.4 ns.

(ProQuest: ... denotes formulae and/or non-USASCII text omitted; see image).A combination is presented of all inclusive deep inelastic cross sections previously published by the H1 and ZEUS ...collaborations at HERA for neutral and charged current ... scattering for zero beam polarisation. The data were taken at proton beam energies of 920, 820, 575 and 460 GeV and an electron beam energy of 27.5 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb... and span six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentum-transfer squared, ..., and Bjorken x. The correlations of the systematic uncertainties were evaluated and taken into account for the combination. The combined cross sections were input to QCD analyses at leading order, next-to-leading order and at next-to-next-to-leading order, providing a new set of parton distribution functions, called HERAPDF2.0. In addition to the experimental uncertainties, model and parameterisation uncertainties were assessed for these parton distribution functions. Variants of HERAPDF2.0 with an alternative gluon parameterisation, HERAPDF2.0AG, and using fixed-flavour-number schemes, HERAPDF2.0FF, are presented. The analysis was extended by including HERA data on charm and jet production, resulting in the variant HERAPDF2.0Jets. The inclusion of jet-production cross sections made a simultaneous determination of these parton distributions and the strong coupling constant possible, resulting in ... An extraction of ... and results on electroweak unification and scaling violations are also presented.

Three groups of patients with single hemispheric brain abscesses or subdural empyemas, from 1 to 5 cm large, with similar initial prognosis, have been treated either by medical treatment alone (20), ...aspiration (21), or excision (15). Differences in survival were not found, but medical treatment alone was better for long term sequelae. Surgical procedures (either aspiration or excision) were better for both isolation of the organism and the hospital stay before discharge. In spite of good results, it is unwise to conclude too strongly in favour of no surgical treatment as this study was not randomised.
Inclusive ep double differential cross sections for neutral current deep inelastic scattering are measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were taken with a lepton beam energy of 27.6 GeV and ...two proton beam energies of Ep = 460 and 575 GeV corresponding to centre-of-mass energies of 225 and 252 GeV, respectively. The measurements cover the region of 6.5 *10^{-4}<=x<= 0.65 for 35<=Q^2<=800 GeV^2 up to y = 0.85. The measurements are used together with previously published H1 data at Ep = 920 GeV and lower Q2 data at Ep = 460, 575 and 920 GeV to extract the longitudinal proton structure function FL in the region 1.5<=Q^2 <=800 GeV^2.

Software designed to help the neurosurgeon in the diagnosis of shunt malfunction is presented. This software allows the possibility to record on a 3.5 diskette a patient's clinical information and ...four views of a CT scan performed when the patient was doing perfectly well with his shunt. This diskette, operated by MS-DOS on any IBM-compatible personal computer, can be read at any time, anywhere. The evaluation of the system demonstrated it was safe, with an excellent adhesion of the patients and of their families.
(ProQuest: ... denotes formulae and/or non-USASCII text omitted; see image) Cross sections for elastic and proton-dissociative photoproduction of J/ψ mesons are measured with the H1 detector in ...positron-proton collisions at HERA. The data were collected at ep centre-of-mass energies ... and ..., corresponding to integrated luminosities of ... and ..., respectively. The cross sections are measured as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy in the range 25<W ^sub γp^<110 GeV. Differential cross sections dσ/dt, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, are measured in the range |t|<1.2 GeV^sup 2^ for the elastic process and |t|<8 GeV^sup 2^ for proton dissociation. The results are compared to other measurements. The W ^sub γp^ and t-dependences are parametrised using phenomenological fits.

A case of an osteoblastoma located in the odontoid process in a 7 year-old boy who presented with torticollis is reported. CT scan and MRI disclosed the lesion, but diagnosis was established by a ...CT-guided needle biopsy. Surgery through a transoral approach allowed total excision of the tumor. This is, to our knowledge, the first case reported of an osteoblastoma of the odontoid process.
Exposing rats to the predator odor of trimethylthiazoline (TMT), obtained from the red fox, was compared to exposure to the novel control odor of citronella. In Experiment 1, TMT produced defensive ...freezing and an analgesic reaction that was reversed by an opiate antagonist. In Experiment 2, TMT augmented response stereotypy induced by an amphetamine injection. In Experiment 3, TMT interfered with working memory during 30-s, but not 0-s, delay trials of a spatial-alternation task. However, a larger amount of TMT disrupted performance during delay and no-delay trials. In Experiment 4, TMT impaired the recall of the location of a hidden platform in a Morris water maze, and a preexposure injection of a benzodiazepine agonist prevented this deficit. These findings and their implications are discussed in terms of research involving similar paradigms with other stressors.
