In superconductors, electrons are paired and condensed into the ground state. An impurity can break the electron pairs into quasiparticles with energy states inside the superconducting gap. The ...characteristics of such in-gap states reflect accordingly the properties of the superconducting ground state. A zero-energy in-gap state is particularly noteworthy, because it can be the consequence of non-trivial pairing symmetry or topology. Here we use scanning tunnelling microscopy/spectroscopy to demonstrate that an isotropic zero-energy bound state with a decay length of ∼10 Å emerges at each interstitial iron impurity in superconducting Fe(Te,Se). More noticeably, this zero-energy bound state is robust against a magnetic field up to 8 T, as well as perturbations by neighbouring impurities. Such a spectroscopic feature has no natural explanation in terms of impurity states in superconductors with s-wave symmetry, but bears all the characteristics of the Majorana bound state proposed for topological superconductors, indicating that the superconducting state and the scattering mechanism of the interstitial iron impurities in Fe(Te,Se) are highly unconventional.

We demonstrate the difference between local, single-particle dynamics and global dynamics of entangled quantum systems coupled to independent environments. Using an all-optical experimental setup, we ...showed that, even when the environment-induced decay of each system is asymptotic, quantum entanglement may suddenly disappear. This "sudden death" constitutes yet another distinct and counterintuitive trait of entanglement.

The surface terminations of 122-type alkaline earth metal iron pnictides AEFe2As2(AE=Ca,Ba) are investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. Cleaving these crystals at a cryogenic ...temperature yields a large majority of terminations with an atomically resolved (√2 × √2)R45 or 1 × 2 lattice, as well as a very rare termination of 1 × 1 lattice symmetry. By analyzing the lattice registration and selective chemical marking, we identify these terminations as (√2 × √2)R45-reconstructed AE, 1 × 2-reconstructed As, and (√2 × √2)R45-reconstructed Fe surface layers, respectively. Layer-resolved tunneling spectroscopy on these terminating surfaces reveals a well-defined superconducting energy gap on the As terminations, while the gap features become weaker on the AE terminations and absent on the Fe terminations. The superconducting gap is hardly affected locally by the As or AE surface reconstructions. The definitive identification of the surface terminations and the associated spectroscopic signatures shed light on the essential roles of As and the pnictogen-iron-pnictogen trilayer building block in iron-based superconductivity.

We addressed the issue of the absence of far-infrared signatures pertaining to charge ordering in the published far-infrared reflectivity data of La2−xSrxCuO4 single crystals while other experimental ...probes reveal that charge ordering is a hallmark of superconducting cuprates. Through direct comparison of the far-infrared data reported by various groups side by side and also with the Raman scattering data, we found that the inconsistencies stem from the failure in capturing delicate spectral features embedded in the close-to-perfect ab-plane far-infrared reflectivity of La2−xSrxCuO4 single crystals by misidentifying the reflectivity as the Drude-like metallic reflectivity. The analysis of the close-to-true reflectivity data reveals that only a small fraction (<3%) of the total doping-induced charge carriers (electrons) are itinerant on the electron lattice made up with the rest of the electrons (>97%) at all doping levels up to 16%. We conclude that the far-infrared reflectivity study is far from being ready to construct a coherent picture of the ubiquitous charge ordering phenomenon and its relationship with the high Tc superconductivity.
We use the classical correlation between a quantum system being measured and its measurement apparatus to analyze the amount of information being retrieved in a quantum measurement process. ...Accounting for decoherence of the apparatus, we show that these correlations may have a sudden transition from a decay regime to a constant level. This transition characterizes a nonasymptotic emergence of the pointer basis, while the system apparatus can still be quantum correlated. We provide a formalization of the concept of emergence of a pointer basis in an apparatus subject to decoherence. This contrast of the pointer basis emergence to the quantum to classical transition is demonstrated in an experiment with polarization entangled photon pairs.

The coexistence of ‘metallic-like’
in-plane dc conductivity and ‘semiconducting-like’
out-of-plane (
c
-axis) dc conductivity
(
σ
c
)
, generating huge anisotropy in underdoped high-temperature ...cuprate superconductors (HTCSs), defies our current understanding of metals. In this report, we present an intrinsic doping dependence of
σ
c
. We find that
σ
c
for underdoped HTCSs is universally scaled to the
σ
c
value at the optimal doped-hole concentration. The universal scaling behavior suggests that there are three intrinsic processes that contribute to
σ
c
: (i) the doping-dependent-activated gap; (ii) the exponential doping dependences, and (iii) the tunneling between adjacent CuO
2 block layers. They are the essential underlying characteristics of the
c
-axis transport for all HTCSs.

We report an experiment in which the moments of spatial coordinates are measured in down-converted photons directly, without having to reconstruct any marginal probability distributions. We use a ...spatial light modulator to couple the spatial degrees of freedom and the polarization of the fields, which acts as an ancilla system. Information about the spatial correlations is obtained via measurements on the ancilla qubit. Among other applications, this new method provides a more efficient technique to identify continuous variable entanglement.

We demonstrate the use of a phase-only spatial light modulator for the measurement of transverse spatial distributions of coincidence counts between twin photon beams, in a fully automated fashion. ...This is accomplished by means of the polarization dependence of the modulator, which allows the conversion of a phase pattern into an amplitude pattern. We also present a correction procedure, that accounts for unwanted coincidence counts due to polarization decoherence effects.
