DC series-parallel collection system has recently been widely discussed for integrating deep-sea OWFs because it saves the offshore HVDC stations. However, comparing with traditional offshore ...electrical collection systems, there is a unique operational problem introducing by the DC series-parallel system that is the wind power curtailment caused by the wind power fluctuations. In this paper, a rigorous mathematical analysis of wind power curtailment is conducted, and an optimization model considering wind power curtailment for DC series-parallel collection systems is proposed. To address the particularities of the series-parallel collection system in graph theory, an improved parthenogenetic algorithm (PGA) is suggested to address the optimization problem. The proposed model and optimization algorithms are tested based on a deep-sea OWF with 56 wind turbines (WTs). The simulation results show that considering wind power curtailment during the DC series-parallel system planning helps to save the levelized cable cost of energy (LCCOE) in the long term, and putting the wiring direction of the series as perpendicular as possible to the prevailing wind direction of the OWF helps to increase the power generation of the OWF and reduce LCCOE.
The artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is a relatively new optimization technique which has been shown to be competitive to other population-based algorithms. However, ABC has an insufficiency ...regarding its solution search equation, which is good at exploration but poor at exploitation. To address this concerning issue, we first propose an improved ABC method called as CABC where a modified search equation is applied to generate a candidate solution to improve the search ability of ABC. Furthermore, we use the orthogonal experimental design (OED) to form an orthogonal learning (OL) strategy for variant ABCs to discover more useful information from the search experiences. Owing to OED's good character of sampling a small number of well representative combinations for testing, the OL strategy can construct a more promising and efficient candidate solution. In this paper, the OL strategy is applied to three versions of ABC, i.e., the standard ABC, global-best-guided ABC (GABC), and CABC, which yields OABC, OGABC, and OCABC, respectively. The experimental results on a set of 22 benchmark functions demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the modified search equation and the OL strategy. The comparisons with some other ABCs and several state-of-the-art algorithms show that the proposed algorithms significantly improve the performance of ABC. Moreover, OCABC offers the highest solution quality, fastest global convergence, and strongest robustness among all the contenders on almost all the test functions.
In the current study, an improved method of adding Zn ion doping to the 0.5BZT–0.5BCT–based films with high pyroelectric properties was designed. Under different Zn ion doping ratios, the structure, ...dielectric constant, phase transition relationship and other characteristics of the test product were analyzed experimentally to obtain the optimal ratio parameters. The experimental results demonstrate that the dielectric properties of the 0.5BZT–0.5BCT–xZn–based films proposed in this study can be far superior to those of other films under the optimal preparation process. The optimal dielectric properties and ferroelectric properties are obtained when the doped data are 0.008. Considering the comprehensive dielectric and energy storage capacity, the optimal doping ratio is 0.01, which can take into account dielectric data and energy storage performance. The energy storage density is 1.842 J/cm3, and the energy storage efficiency exceeds 30%. From 0 to 0.02, the properties of the material, such as the hysteresis loop and phase transition relationship are excellent. The properties of the materials studied in this study are excellent, and they are excellent candidate materials for the future application of ferroelectric materials, and provide ideas for related work.

Additionally, we use a more robust calculation to determine and compare the quality of alternative solutions. Experiments are conducted on a set of 48 benchmark functions and also two engineering optimization problems. The results show that EABC significantly improves the performance of ABC, offering faster global convergence, higher solution quality, and stronger robustness when compared with the other algorithms.

Conspectus Photon upconversion, the process of converting low-energy photons into high-energy ones, has been widely applied for solar energy conversion, photoredox catalysis, and various biological ...applications such as background-free bioimaging, cancer therapy, and optogenetics. Upconversion materials that are based on triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) are of particular interest due to their low excitation power requirements (e.g., ambient sunlight) and easily tunable excitation and emission wavelengths. Despite advances that have been made with respect to TTA upconversion (TTA-UC) in the past decade, several challenges remain for near-infrared light-activatable triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion (NIR TTA-UC). These challenges include low upconversion quantum yield, small anti-Stokes shift, and incompatibility with oxygen, the latter of which seriously limits the practical applications of NIR TTA-UC. This Account will summarize the recent research endeavors to address the above-mentioned challenges and the recent new applications. The first part of this Account highlights recent strategies of molecular design to modulate the excited states of photosensitizers and annihilators, two key factors to determine TTA-UC performance. Novel molecular engineering strategies such as the resonance energy transfer method, dimerization of dye units, and the helix twist molecular structure have been proposed to tune the excited states of photosensitizers. The obtained photosensitizers exhibited enhanced absorption of deep tissue penetrable near-infrared (NIR) light, produced a triplet excited state with elevated energy level and prolonged lifetime, and promoted intersystem crossing, leading to an upgraded TTA-UC system with significantly expanded anti-Stokes shift. With respect to the annihilator, the perylene derivatives were systematically explored, and their attached aromatic groups were found to be the key to adjusting the energy levels of both the triplet and singlet excited states. The resultant optimal TTA-UC system exhibits the highest recorded efficiency among NIR TTA-UC systems. Moreover, to resolve the oxygen-induced TTA-UC quenching, enzymatic reactions were recently introduced. More specifically, the glucose oxidase-catalyzed glucose oxidation reaction showed the ability to rapidly consume oxygen to turn on the TTA-UC luminescence in an aqueous solution. The resultant TTA-UC nanoparticle was able to detect glucose and an enzyme related to glucose metabolism in a highly specific, sensitive, and background-free manner. Further, the upconverted singlet excited state of the annihilator was directly utilized as the catalyst or the excited substrate. For example, the modification of annihilators and drug molecules with photolabile linkages can realize the long wavelength light-induced photolysis. Compared to direct short-wavelength-driven photolysis, this sensitized TTA photolysis (TTAP) exhibits superior reaction yield and lower photodamage, which are important in the release of drugs for tumor treatment in vivo. Moreover, the improved upconversion efficiency can enable the successful coupling of NIR TTA-UC with a visible light absorbing photocatalyst for NIR-driven photoredox catalysis. Compared to direct visible-light photocatalysis, TTA-UC mediated NIR photoredox catalysis showed superior product yield especially in large scale reaction systems owing to the deep penetration power of NIR light. More interestingly, among a few promising technology applications, three-dimensional (3D) printing based on photopolymerization can operate with faster speed and energy-input several orders of magnitude lower when the two-photon polymerization is replaced with TTA-UC mediated polymerization. We believe this Account will spur interest in the further development and application of TTA-UC in the areas of energy, chemistry, material science, and biology.

Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) mediate both perception and release of semiochemicals in insects. These proteins are the ideal targets for understanding the olfactory code of insects as well as for ...interfering with their communication system in order to control pest species. The two sibling Lepidopteran species Helicoverpa armigera and H. assulta are two major agricultural pests. As part of our aim to characterize the OBP repertoire of these two species, here we focus our attention on a member of this family, OBP10, particularly interesting for its expression pattern. The protein is specifically expressed in the antennae of both sexes, being absent from other sensory organs. However, it is highly abundant in seminal fluid, is transferred to females during mating and is eventually found on the surface of fertilised eggs. Among the several different volatile compounds present in reproductive organs, OBP10 binds 1-dodecene, a compound reported as an insect repellent. These results have been verified in both H. armigera and H. assulta with no apparent differences between the two species. The recombinant OBP10 binds, besides 1-dodecene, some linear alcohols and several aromatic compounds. The structural similarity of OBP10 with OBP1 of the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus, a protein reported to bind an oviposition pheromone, and its affinity with 1-dodecene suggest that OBP10 could be a carrier for oviposition deterrents, favouring spreading of the eggs in these species where cannibalism is active among larvae.

The microenvironment (local environment), including viscosity, temperature, polarity, hypoxia, and acidic-basic status (pH), plays indispensable roles in cellular processes. Significantly, organelles ...require an appropriate microenvironment to perform their specific physiological functions, and disruption of the microenvironmental homeostasis could lead to malfunctions of organelles, resulting in disorder and disease development. Consequently, monitoring the microenvironment within specific organelles is vital to understand organelle-related physiopathology. Over the past few years, many fluorescent probes have been developed to help reveal variations in the microenvironment within specific cellular regions. Given that a comprehensive understanding of the microenvironment in a particular cellular region is of great significance for further exploration of life events, a thorough summary of this topic is urgently required. However, there has not been a comprehensive and critical review published recently on small-molecule fluorescent chemosensors for the cellular microenvironment. With this review, we summarize the recent progress since 2015 towards small-molecule based fluorescent probes for imaging the microenvironment within specific cellular regions, including the mitochondria, lysosomes, lipid drops, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi, nucleus, cytoplasmic matrix and cell membrane. Further classifications at the suborganelle level, according to detection of microenvironmental factors by probes, including polarity, viscosity, temperature, pH and hypoxia, are presented. Notably, in each category, design principles, chemical synthesis, recognition mechanism, fluorescent signals, and bio-imaging applications are summarized and compared. In addition, the limitations of the current microenvironment-sensitive probes are analyzed and the prospects for future developments are outlined. In a nutshell, this review comprehensively summarizes and highlights recent progress towards small molecule based fluorescent probes for sensing and imaging the microenvironment within specific cellular regions since 2015. We anticipate that this summary will facilitate a deeper understanding of the topic and encourage research directed towards the development of probes for the detection of cellular microenvironments.

Organic triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) materials have considerable promise in areas as broad as biology, solar energy harvesting, and photocatalysis. However, the development of ...highly efficient near-infrared (NIR) light activatable TTA-UC systems remains extremely challenging. In this work, we report on a method of systematically tailoring an annihilator to attain such outstanding systems. By chemical modifications of a commonly used perylene annihilator, we constructed a family of perylene derivatives that have simultaneously tailored triplet excited state energy (T1) and singlet excited state energy (S1), two key annihilator factors to determine TTA-UC performance. Via this method, we were able to tune the TTA-UC system from an endothermic type to an exothermic one, thus significantly elevating the upconversion performance of NIR light activatable TTA upconversion systems. In conjunction with the photosensitizer PdTNP (10 μM), the upconversion efficiency using the optimal annihilator (100 μM) identified in this study was measured to be 14.1% under the low-power density of NIR light (100 mW/cm2, 720 nm). Furthermore, using such a low concentration of perylene derivative, we demonstrated that the optimal TTA-UC pair developed in our study can act as a highly effective light wavelength up-shifter to enable NIR light to drive a photoredox catalysis that otherwise requires visible light. We found that such an NIR driven method is highly effective and can even surpass directly visible light driven photoredox catalysis. This method is important for photoredox catalysis as NIR light can penetrate much deeper in colored photoredox catalysis reaction solutions, especially when done in a large-scale manner. Furthermore, this TTA-UC mediated photoredox catalysis reaction is found to be outdoor sunlight operable. Thus, our study provides a solution to enhance NIR activatable organic upconversion and set the stage for a wide array of applications that have previously been limited by the suboptimal efficiency of the existing TTA upconversion materials.

Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion nanoparticles have attracted considerable interest due to their promises in organic chemistry, solar energy harvesting and several biological applications. ...However, triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion in aqueous solutions is challenging due to sensitivity to oxygen, hindering its biological applications under ambient atmosphere. Herein, we report a simple enzymatic strategy to overcome oxygen-induced triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion quenching. This strategy stems from a glucose oxidase catalyzed glucose oxidation reaction, which enables rapid oxygen depletion to turn on upconversion in the aqueous solution. Furthermore, self-standing upconversion biological sensors of such nanoparticles are developed to detect glucose and measure the activity of enzymes related to glucose metabolism in a highly specific, sensitive and background-free manner. This study not only overcomes the key roadblock for applications of triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion nanoparticles in aqueous solutions, it also establishes the proof-of-concept to develop triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion nanoparticles as background free self-standing biological sensors.
Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) have opened new opportunities for understanding human development, modelling disease processes and developing new therapeutics. However, these applications are ...hindered by the low efficiency and heterogeneity of cell types, such as motorneurons (MNs), differentiated from hPSCs as well as our inability to maintain the potency of lineage-committed progenitors. Here by using a combination of small molecules that regulate multiple signalling pathways, we develop a method to guide human embryonic stem cells to a near-pure population (>95%) of motor neuron progenitors (MNPs) in 12 days, and an enriched population (>90%) of functionally mature MNs in an additional 16 days. More importantly, the MNPs can be expanded for at least five passages so that a single MNP can be amplified to 1 × 10(4). This method is reproducible in human-induced pluripotent stem cells and is applied to model MN-degenerative diseases and in proof-of-principle drug-screening assays.
