The subject of the present study is the word formation theory in one of the oldest grammars of the Russian language, the instruction in 1705-29 to learn the Slavonic-Russian language, "For the ...benefit, especially the Teutschen Nation, aufgesetze" by Johann Werner Pause. The "instruction" is a central text of the so-called "dolomonovskij period rusistiki", i. the leisure of grammatical codification of Russian before the appearance of the first Russian grammar printed for native speakers, the "Rossijskaja grammatika" (1755/57) M.V. Lomonosov.

The protest movement in Belarus has chosen two historical national images as its symbols: the Pahonia coat of arms showing a knight on horseback, which was originally used for the Great Duchy of Lithuania, and the white-red-white flag of the short-lived Belarusian People’s Republic. Both are symbols of a troubled past. In the Soviet Union, they were forbidden as representations of a national, anti-communist desire for independence. Even today, they still have abhorrent associations with the parts of the Belarusian national movement that collaborated with the National Socialist occupiers during the Second World War. In 1991, the national emblems experienced a renaissance, and in 1995, the Soviet state symbols returned almost unchanged. The conflict over the political order is reflected in the dispute surrounding the symbols.

In Poland, since the collapse of the People’s Republic, a “right-wing” literature scene has developed. As was the case during the inter-war years, the phenomenon has many different facets. This literature reflects a political and ideological polarisation in society. The attitude of todays’ “right-wing” authors is marked by traditionalism, patriotism, Catholicism, anti-communism, catastrophism and a mistrust of liberalism, globalisation and the modern era. “Right-wing” literature has emerged from its niche, is becoming more broadly received and is receiving positive reviews by literary critics.

In Japan as well, the dissolution of the Soviet Union led to a reassessment and reorganisation of research into the former Soviet space. But unlike in Western Europe and North America, financial and institutional support of East European Studies did not collapse. SlavicEurasian Studies enjoy more attention today than ever before. Scholarly output has increased. Academics from all of the relevant disciplines have adopted transnational and comparative approaches. The internationalisation of Japanese research has also grown. However, Japanese specialists publish their findings about the Slavic-Eurasian space more often in Russia and Asia than in the Anglo-Saxon world. This hinders reception of their work.

At first sight, Russia has a diverse media landscape. The television market has become a huge business. However, there is certainly no multiplicity of opinions. The media are controlled by the Kremlin. Its tools are no longer censorship and force, but the co-optation of the media owners, the most important of whom are close associates of Vladimir Putin. The television channels have become propaganda tools and a means for sedating the general public. The print media have become entirely irrelevant when it comes to forming public opinion and the political decision-making process. In the consolidated, authoritarian system, there is no longer any ‘fourth power’. The media have lost their function as watchdog. However, islands of serious, independent and high-quality journalism still survive.

Poland is undergoing profound changes with regard to its policy towards eastern Europe. The Law and Justice party (PiS) is abandoning the concept that has been state policy since 1989. In the past, the core principle has been that Poland’s freedom depends on the sovereignty of Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus, that Poland supports their democratisation, processes its own hegemonial traditions and pursues a policy of reconciliation. Now, a renaissance of the myth surrounding the Polish eastern territories (Kresy) can be observed. The PiS is borrowing from the ethnonational, polonocentric ideas of the inter-war years. This history policy, as well as the re-evaluation of the Volhynia massacre, are putting a strain on relations with Ukraine in particular.

At first glance, Russia and Turkey resemble twins. They have an imperial heritage, the nation building process has not yet been completed, and modernisation has occurred through state mobilisation. Their relationship with Europe is also ambivalent. The authoritarian regimes appear to be ideal alliance partners. Yet in reality, this is far from true. Their current joint appearance belies the fact that they are pursuing different interests in their shared regional environment, where they have become competitors due to the ongoing imperialist nature of their strategic culture.

Polish society has not processed the trauma of the war. As a result, emotions spill over into bitter conflicts when it comes to history and remembrance. The year of 1945 stands for the return from the horrors of war. However, society was marked by poverty, disintegration and atomisation for years to come. Institutions had fallen apart, the social order and the system of values were shattered. The only experience that bound people together was a sense of Polishness defined along pre-war lines. However, countless Poles had lost their homes in the east of the country, while others were forcibly repatriated to the western territories, which were referred to as the "Recovered Territories". And among those few Polish Jews who had managed to survive the Holocaust, some were confronted with the experience of being unwelcome guests in their own houses, which their Polish neighbours had made their home. In reality, there is no such thing as a "return" of the Poles. Trauma and taboos have settled like sediment in Polish society. They demand to be examined and processed.

In Belarus, the authoritarian ruler Lukashenka has created a personality-based regime in which all political and social processes are controlled by him via a rigid vertical power structure. For him, power is a question of life and death. His worldview is dominated by conspiracy theories, and politics is a battle against his enemies. Lukashenka regards the state as being his own, and the people as his subjects. Due to his lack of communication with society, he failed to register the development of a revolutionary situation in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election. For Lukashenka, the only way of responding to the protests is to use repression and violence. Yet the fundamental social changes that have been set in motion are unstoppable.

The domestic political changes under the government of the Law and Justice party has caused certitudes about Poland's role in the European Union to totter. Yesterday's model pupil is now creating serious problems. This is proven by the launching of rule of law proceedings against Poland over its Constitutional Court Law. The refugee crisis shows that European solidarity no longer works. This has led to disillusionment in Brussels and Berlin. But in energy, neighbourhood, and Russia policy, as well as in the controversy surrounding the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2, Poland needs precisely these two partners. Poland is at risk of structural marginalisation within the EU, because it is withdrawing from central fields of policy, such as the euro, Schengen border agreement, and asylum policy. The Law and Justice camp is increasingly calling into question EU mechanisms of functioning. Simultaneously, Europe's positive image in society is eroding. Poland's European calling faces a historic test.
