Sialolithiasis is defined as the development of stones within the parenchyma or ducts of the salivary glands, and it frequently affects the submandibular gland duct of male adults. We report a case ...of sialolithiasis occurring in the submandibular gland parenchyma and its surgical treatment. A 44-year-old male patient was referred for evaluation of a painful swelling in the submandibular region with 1-week evolution. The extraoral examination revealed a volume growth in the right submandibular region. Intraorally, there were no alterations. The panoramic radiography revealed a well-defined radiopaque lesion measuring approximately 2.5 cm. The clinical and radiographic findings established the sialolithiasis diagnosis. The treatment consisted of the excision of both sialolith and the right submandibular gland due to its location in the parenchyma, under general anesthesia, using an extraoral submandibular approach. The specimen was subsequently sent to the laboratory for histologic confirmation. The patient's recovery was uneventful.

Sturge-Weber angiomatosis, also known as encephalotrigeminal angiomatosis or Sturge-Weber syndrome, is a rare nonhereditary developmental condition characterized by hamartoma vascular proliferation ...that may involve both the brain and face. This study reports a case of Sturge-Weber angiomatosis associated with the presence of hemangioma in a 56-year-old, not white, male, complaining of injury among teeth 11 and 12 with an evolution time of 6 months, asymptomatic, with bleeding during mastication and brushing. Extraoral and intraoral examination revealed the presence of a flammeus nevus (port-wine stain) on the right hemiface and intraoral manifestations of vascular alterations in the tongue. Because it is a vascular alteration, a biopsy is contraindicated due to the risk of bleeding. The patient was referred to a vascular surgeon and the lesions were monitored. The medical history and clinical examination are fundamental for the establishment of a clinical diagnosis and therapeutic protocol.

To describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of patients diagnosed with oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) by an oral medicine reference center in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil.
This is an ...observational, longitudinal, and retrospective study that analyzed records of patients diagnosed with OPMDs (leukoplakia, actinic cheilitis, leukoerythroplakia, proliferative verrucous leukoplakia) from 2004 to 2019. The study variables were organized in an Excel spreadsheet.
82 cases of OPMDs were diagnosed, of which 49 were women. The mean age was 60.7 years; 49 patients were Caucasian. The most common lesion was leukoplakia (n = 39), followed by actinic cheilitis (n = 37), leukoerythroplakia (n = 5) and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (n = 1). Most patients reported no tobacco (n = 49/72) or no alcohol consumption (n = 42/72). The main anatomical location of OPMDs, except for actinic cheilitis, was the gingiva (n = 13/39). The treatment of choice was surgery (n = 34/65).
OPMDs were more common among women. The mean age of 60.7 years is in accordance with the literature. The main lesion was leukoplakia, followed by actinic cheilitis. Most patients had no tobacco and/or alcohol consumption. The treatment of choice was surgery excision.

Spindle cell carcinoma (SCC) consists of biphasic, malignant, and rare neoplasm, with a poor prognosis due to the high probability of metastasis and recurrence. A 55-year-old White male patient, a ...drinker and smoker, presented with a mass on his tongue with a 6-month evolution that caused a burning sensation. Clinically, an exophytic, ulcerated, and hemorrhagic nodular lesion was observed in the left lateral edge of the tongue with the hypothesis of squamous cell carcinoma. An incisional biopsy was performed, allowing the diagnosis of SCC, a variant of squamous cell carcinoma, due to fusiform cells with atypia and cellular pleomorphism. Surgical excision was performed as treatment, but the patient died prior to the start of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The aim of this study was to conduct a review demonstrating the main oral manifestations in patients with Sjögren's syndrome and its consequences on their quality of life, highlighting the importance ...of the dentist in the diagnosis of this systemic disease.
A search was performed in the databases ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and PubMed from 2012 to 2020, highlighting its relevance.
The search resulted in 11 articles that were included in this review. The main oral manifestations found in patients with Sjögren's Syndrome were as follows: hyposalivation; resulting in oral mucosa dryness and ulcerated lesions; fungal infections; and tooth loss due to caries lesions. These changes have a major negative impact on the quality of life of these people, and many of them first turn to the dentist to solve the problem.
Based on this review, the dentist must be able to know the main oral alterations of this disease. The multidisciplinary approach involving dentists and doctors, mainly the rheumatologist, is extremely important to guarantee the best treatment for the patient.

Syphilis is a bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum, which can be transmitted mainly through unprotected sexual contact or vertical transmission. This disease can manifest itself in the ...primary, secondary, and tertiary stages. The most important laboratory tests for diagnosis are treponemic and nontreponemic tests. A 23-year-old male patient attended the oral medicine clinic reporting an asymptomatic upper lip vermilion lesion. The physical examination revealed an ulcerated lesion with a clear base in the vermilion of the upper lip, on the right side, of approximately 1.0 cm. Clinically, the diagnostic hypothesis was chancre. Incisional biopsy and serological tests for syphilis and human immunodeficiency virus were performed. The histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnostic hypothesis, and the tests obtained positive results only for syphilis. Treatment was performed with a single dose of benzathine penicillin and the lesion regressed, testing negative in the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory after 3 months.

A 60-year-old White female patient presented with the chief complaint of 3-month loss of taste while using an over-the-counter flask of mouthwash per day during this period. Her medical history was ...not contributory. Intraoral examination revealed that the dorsal surface of the tongue was covered by a soft layer of elongated filiform papillae, presenting a brownish coloration, which confirmed the diagnosis of hairy tongue associated with ageusia. Complementary exams were not necessary because the diagnosis was obtained through clinical examination. A few articles in the literature suggest that agents present in some mouthrinses may increase the risk of hairy tongue and cause dysgeusia. Therefore, in this case, the use of mouthwash was discontinued, and the patient received instructions about oral hygiene. In the follow-up, regression of the hairy tongue was observed, and the patient reported the return of the taste sensitivity.
