A 60-year-old White female patient presented with the chief complaint of 3-month loss of taste while using an over-the-counter flask of mouthwash per day during this period. Her medical history was ...not contributory. Intraoral examination revealed that the dorsal surface of the tongue was covered by a soft layer of elongated filiform papillae, presenting a brownish coloration, which confirmed the diagnosis of hairy tongue associated with ageusia. Complementary exams were not necessary because the diagnosis was obtained through clinical examination. A few articles in the literature suggest that agents present in some mouthrinses may increase the risk of hairy tongue and cause dysgeusia. Therefore, in this case, the use of mouthwash was discontinued, and the patient received instructions about oral hygiene. In the follow-up, regression of the hairy tongue was observed, and the patient reported the return of the taste sensitivity.

To present a digital tool designed to help dental surgeons and undergraduate students understand and identify the lesions most commonly found in the dental practice by a smartphone application.
A ...database was developed containing 100 lesions, as the most common ones encountered daily, containing information on etiology, clinical, and radiographic presentation, treatment, pathognomonic signs, diagnosis, and images of each lesion. These lesions are presented in an interactive way, where users can search by name and obtain access to the registered content. In addition, a database with diagnostic hypothesis was developed, where more than 4000 combinations of the characteristics of the 100 presented lesions were registered in the application.
The results of the use of this project are very subjective because it is an innovative way of bringing content to the professional/student. As the user creates interest in the topics covered, it is expected that they seek to deepen their knowledge in the available bibliography.
Given the great adhesion to smartphones by the general population, this tool serves as a source of research and contributes to the dissemination of specialized content, making it possible to generate faster and more accurate diagnoses.

Oral dental lesions such as cavities, periodontal disease, and tooth loss represent a public health problem in the world, including patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). ...Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of oral changes in HIV-positive patients in a small city in Brazil and to estimate the need for specialized treatment. Study Design: The study was observational and followed a cross-sectional design. Patients underwent oral and perioral examination. Results: Of a total of 42 patients evaluated in the study, 26 male and 16 female, we registered a low frequency of infectious and neoplastic lesions associated with HIV, but a high frequency was observed in dental lesions such as periodontal disease, bacterial plaque, cavities, root remains, absences, and soft tissue injuries. Conclusions: It was possible to verify that, although they are clinically regularly followed, the oral health of the sample deserves specialized attention and would benefit from a monitoring project with appropriate resources and qualified professionals.

To describe a preventive dental protocol for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in patients with HIV before and after bisphosphonate therapy.
Development of the protocol was based on ...literature review of articles, book chapters, and theses in the last 10 years.
The proposed protocol focuses on 3 groups of patients with HIV: Patients diagnosed as having osteoporosis who have not started treatment with bisphosphonates; patients at risk for developing MRONJ, and stage 0 patients. It should be noted that certain features of the preventive protocol stages, such as the shorter breaks between appointments and the early application of low-power laser therapy, take into account the possibility of greater severity and/or fastness in MRONJ signs and symptoms in patients with HIV.
Although the steps of the protocol are simple, they require technical-scientific knowledge by the dentist and the application of laser therapy, a particularity that may constitute a challenge for the adoption of such protocol in the Brazilian public health service. The role of dentistry in the multidisciplinary approach of patients with HIV still lacks on the AIDS protocols and guidelines offered by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Because these documents may influence medical opinions and behaviors, it seems appropriate to emphasize this gap on such system.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a hereditary disorder of the connective tissue that occurs due to a deficiency in the production of collagen, and it can affect bones, tendons, and teeth. Its oral ...manifestations may be associated with opalescent teeth. This is a case report of osteogenesis imperfecta affecting 5 members of the same family---a mother and her 4 children---with ages ranging between 8 and 42 years old and both sexes. Characteristics of opalescent teeth were observed during individual clinical examination. Early tooth loss, facial asymmetry, and reports of numerous dental and bone fractures were also observed. Radiographic examinations were requested, and the patients were referred for oral rehabilitation.

Amelanotic melanoma (AM) is a rare malignant lesion that presents a diagnostic challenge due to its wide clinical presentations, lack of pigmentation, and varied histologic appearances. ...Immunohistochemistry plays a crucial role in the diagnosis. We report a case of a 45-year-old male patient with a red and bleeding growth on the mandibular gingiva, resembling a pyogenic granuloma. An incisional biopsy was performed, and the histopathologic analysis was characterized by proliferation of nests and sheets of nonpigmented atypical epithelioid and plasmacytoid cells displaying a poorly delimited cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nucleus. Immunohistochemistry showed multifocal staining for melanocytic markers, S100 protein, HMB-45, Melan-A, and Ki-67 (95%). These findings confirmed the diagnosis of AM. The patient was referred to the oncologist who observed disease progression to the lungs, liver, and pancreas. The patient was under palliative care and medical follow-up but died. AM has a poor prognosis, with a high incidence of metastasis, recurrence, and death.

Ameloblastoma is an epithelial odontogenic tumor that primarily affects the posterior mandible in patients from 20 to 60 years of age. It usually presents as a well-defined, unilocular to ...multilocular radiolucency with associated expansion of the jaws. Ameloblastoma arising from the anterior mandibular region is rare. We report 2 cases of ameloblastoma affecting the anterior mandible. The first case is a 59-year-old male patient with a swelling of 1 year duration, and the second is from a 74-year-old female with a painless swelling and tooth mobility lasting 2 years. Panoramic radiography showed in both cases a well-defined multilocular radiolucency with thin corticated borders. Microscopic analysis of both cases revealed islands of odontogenic epithelium with central stellate reticulum-like areas and peripheral ameloblastic areas, arranged in a follicular pattern. The treatment was surgical resection, and no evidence of recurrences was observed.

Syphilis is an infectious disease caused by Treponema pallidum that is transmitted by sexual contact or eventually vertical transmission. The infection has a characteristic evolution that develops ...classically in 3 stages (primary, secondary, and tertiary). A 34-year-old female sought treatment complaining of “mouth sores that not disappear.” During the clinical examination elevated white plaques were observed in the oropharynx and buccal mucosa. Clinical diagnosis was secondary syphilis. Serologic tests were requested (venereal disease research laboratory and fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption tests), and both showed normal results. As the clinical diagnosis of syphilis persisted, an incisional biopsy was performed and showed the typical features of the disease. Final diagnosis was syphilis, and the patient was referred for appropriate medical treatment.
