Ameloblastoma is an epithelial odontogenic tumor that primarily affects the posterior mandible in patients from 20 to 60 years of age. It usually presents as a well-defined, unilocular to ...multilocular radiolucency with associated expansion of the jaws. Ameloblastoma arising from the anterior mandibular region is rare. We report 2 cases of ameloblastoma affecting the anterior mandible. The first case is a 59-year-old male patient with a swelling of 1 year duration, and the second is from a 74-year-old female with a painless swelling and tooth mobility lasting 2 years. Panoramic radiography showed in both cases a well-defined multilocular radiolucency with thin corticated borders. Microscopic analysis of both cases revealed islands of odontogenic epithelium with central stellate reticulum-like areas and peripheral ameloblastic areas, arranged in a follicular pattern. The treatment was surgical resection, and no evidence of recurrences was observed.

Amelanotic melanoma (AM) is a rare malignant lesion that presents a diagnostic challenge due to its wide clinical presentations, lack of pigmentation, and varied histologic appearances. ...Immunohistochemistry plays a crucial role in the diagnosis. We report a case of a 45-year-old male patient with a red and bleeding growth on the mandibular gingiva, resembling a pyogenic granuloma. An incisional biopsy was performed, and the histopathologic analysis was characterized by proliferation of nests and sheets of nonpigmented atypical epithelioid and plasmacytoid cells displaying a poorly delimited cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nucleus. Immunohistochemistry showed multifocal staining for melanocytic markers, S100 protein, HMB-45, Melan-A, and Ki-67 (95%). These findings confirmed the diagnosis of AM. The patient was referred to the oncologist who observed disease progression to the lungs, liver, and pancreas. The patient was under palliative care and medical follow-up but died. AM has a poor prognosis, with a high incidence of metastasis, recurrence, and death.

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic disease caused by the dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and is most common in Latin America. It has a marked predilection for men. A 76-year-old ...woman looked for help complaining about "a mouth ulcer, which extended all the way from the tongue to the throat." The patient reported that the lesions had been hurting for 3 months. She also affirmed being a smoker for 30 years. In the extraoral physical exam, a cervical bilateral, sublingual, and submandibular lymphadenopathy was noted. In the intraoral exam ulcerated lesions on the dorsum and apex of the tongue were observed, as well as a nodule in the right pterygomandibular raphe. The diagnostic hypotheses were squamous cell carcinoma and paracoccidioidomycosis. An incisional biopsy was performed and a conclusion of paracoccidioidomycosis diagnostic was reached. The patient underwent treatment under the surveillance of an infectious diseases specialist and has been using systemic antifungal medication since then.

Background
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multifactorial autoimmune disease that may affect the oral mucosa. The variable spectrum of oral lesions observed in SLE can pose challenges in ...diagnosis, particularly when the lesions occur in isolation. The aim of this study was to describe the oral lesions occurring in patients with SLE from Latin America.
Methods
This collaborative record-based study involving 11 oral and maxillofacial pathology and medicine services across Venezuela, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Mexico describes the clinicopathological profile of SLE-related oral lesions.
Results
Seventy patients with SLE and oral lesions were included in the study. The majority were females (75.7%; female/male ratio: 3.1:1) and white (62.1%), with a mean age of 38.4 years (range: 11–77 years). The most common site of oral lesions was the hard/soft palate (32.0%). Clinically, oral lesions predominantly presented as ulcers (26.6%), erosions (26.6%), and white lesions (23.4%). Isolated oral lesions occurred in 65.2% of individuals, while cutaneous manifestations occurred in 80.3%. The main clinical diagnostic hypothesis in 71.4% of cases was an immune-mediated disease. Oral biopsies followed by histopathological analysis were performed in 50 cases.
Conclusion
Oral lesions of SLE exhibit a variety of clinical and histopathological features. A key point in diagnosis is that unusual oral changes without an obvious local cause may indicate a possible systemic condition presenting with oral lesions. A multidisciplinary approach, which includes regular oral examination, is warranted to identify oral lesions and provide treatment.

Oral lymphoepithelial cyst (OLC) is an unusual lesion with uncertain pathogenicity. OLC has a discreet preference for men and it is frequently reported on the lateral and ventral tongue surface. ...Subgemmal neurogenous plaque (SNP) is a biphasic neural structure associated with the taste buds. It has a discreet predilection for women and is clinically characterized as a nodule, commonly located on the posterior lateral tongue surface. The aim of this study is to report a case of OLC associated with SNP, its clinical-pathologic characteristics, and treatment. A 53-year-old white woman, smoker, with no systemic involvement, presenting with a lateral tongue asymptomatic nodular lesion, sought help. An excisional biopsy was performed and showed it was OLC associated with an SNP. The patient is being followed and 1 year after the surgery, no recurrence could be observed. The authors believe this is the first case showing an association of OLC and SNP.

Diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis (DSO) affects adults, exhibits no gender predilection, and often occurs in the jawbone. A 20-year-old male patient presented to our service with "facial pain" and ...mandibular asymmetry caused by a bone enlargement in the right side. Computerized tomography (CT) scanning showed large, mixed radiolucent and radiopaque areas associated with bone erosions from mandibular condyle to ipsilateral body. Culture and antibiogram analysis were negative. Histopathologic examination demonstrated unspecified bone inflammation signs. After review of the literature, the patient was referred to a rheumatologist and methotrexate in combination with folic acid was initiated on a weekly basis. The patient reports progressive reduction of pain although facial asymmetry still persists. Diagnosis of DSO may be challenging due to nonspecific findings and rarity of the disease. Fibrous dysplasia should be ruled out.

We report the clinical case of a 25-year-old male patient, forwarded by the dentist with clinical suspicion of tooth erosion, who reported in the anamnesis "teeth like a swimming pool," emphasizing ...that he always presented this symptom without discomfort, did not report pain/sensitivity at mastication, and did not use medical drugs but reported stressed life. At physical examination, the posteroinferior teeth presented severe occlusal wear with dentin exposure and loss of dental substance in the cervical region at the vestibular surface of the upper canines and premolars, more evident in the left hemiarch, compatible with tooth erosion. To elucidate the cause, additional questions were asked, and the patient reported consumption of 4 L/wk of energy drinks. The patient was referred for rehabilitation of the dental elements.

Pemphigoid of the mucous membranes represents a group of subepithelial blistering diseases of autoimmune origin. The radiation emitted by the low-level laser affects the metabolic processes of the ...target cells, producing biostimulants that act in the process of regeneration of the tissues. A 34-year-old female patient presented clinically with an erythematous gingiva that was blistering and scaling, with painful and burning symptomatology. An excisional biopsy was performed, sent for histopathologic examination, confirming the diagnosis of mucous membrane pemphigoid. Treatment included low-level laser therapy at the wavelength 630 to 700 nm, following the 1 J protocol for interdental papilla, with an area of approximately 1 cm² per point, and use of steroids. The objective of this study is to demonstrate how laser therapy functions in the treatment of oral lesions of mucous membrane pemphigoid.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequent oral malignant neoplasm. Early diagnosis is key in successful treatment of this neoplasia. The aims of this study are to report a case of an aggressive ...squamous cell carcinoma, to discuss the factors involved in the late diagnosis of an advanced lesion, and to make a critical appraisal of the Brazilian health system and the difficulties found in referring these patients. A male patient, 50 years of age with a history of chronic alcoholism and tobacco use, presented with a proliferative ulcer with an indurated, raised margin, involving the left palate, the lower gingiva, and the buccal mucosa extending and overlying the skin. The extraoral incisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma and the patient was referred to an oncologist. The factors that delay this diagnosis are: misinformation, self-care negligence, and socioeconomic patient aspects; inappropriate oral mucosa examination; unfamiliarity with oral diseases; and difficulties with referral for oncologic treatment. The diagnostic delay results in greater morbidity and mortality due to the disease.

To accomplish a retrospective statistical survey on cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in a stomatology clinic, from March 2011 to February 2018, given the importance of this type of cancer, ...which represents 94% of all oral malignant neoplasms.
Retrospective cross-sectional study of issued reports and medical records of patients diagnosed as having SCC.
This study had 94 analyzed patients: 51.6% of them were white, 61.78% were male, 58.51% were regular smokers, and 45.74% were alcoholics. The average age was 64.2 years. The more common locations were tongue (43.61%), mouth floor (29.78%), alveolar ridge (12.76%), hard palate (10.63%), and lower lip (8.51%). It can be suggested that 36.77% were referred from the public service. The diagnosis is usually obtained late, considerably affecting the prognosis. Factors such as lack of information from patients and lack of training of health professionals are the main responsible for the delay in the diagnosis of oral cancer.
We would like to emphasize the importance of a critical clinical examination, the accomplishment of an early diagnosis, and the orientation regarding the risk factors of SCC.
