To analyze the behavior of students on the last year of dentistry of 2 universities in relation to the care of patients with HIV/AIDS.
The sample consists of 60 students who attended the last year of ...dentistry. It was used as a quiz to evaluate the technical and social knowledge about the HIV virus, its forms of transmission, and its treatment.
Students were divided into 2 groups (A and B) according to their educational institution. Regarding the previous training, 90% of group A and 83.3% of group B said that they did not receive enough information in their formation. Regarding the evaluation of their formation about offering knowledge to attend these patients, 63.3% of group A and 66.7% of group B conceptualized their formation as positive; then, as for knowledge, both groups presented a “good” concept. Regarding the professionals’ attitudes toward the treatment of these patient and the practices adopted, both groups presented an “excellent” concept.
The level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices among future professionals were considered good. However, there is still a need for more information for these future professionals to be able to offer quality treatment and safety care to patients with HIV/AIDS.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a neoplastic disorder originating from clonal proliferation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow microenvironment. MM is identified by the accumulation of ...differentiated B cells. The aim of this study is to report a case of a 65-year-old man presenting with a sessile swelling on the left palate measuring 8 cm in its largest diameter and covered by a necrotic membrane on the central surface area. Provisional clinical diagnosis included mucoepidermoid carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma and an incisional biopsy was performed. Histologic analysis showed a diffuse proliferation of malignant cells with plasmablastic differentiation. Immunoreactions, bone marrow biopsy and systemic evaluation of the patient confirmed the diagnosis of MM. The patient was classified as stage 0 of the disease, underwent chemotherapy and use of thalidomide, and is under clinical control for 6 months.

Known for its dental and clavicular abnormalities, cleidocranial dysplasia is a rare disorder of bones. The appearance of the patient often confirms the diagnosis: short stature; large head with ...pronounced frontal and parietal bossing; ocular hypertelorism; and broad base of the nose with a depressed nasal bridge. Gnathic and dental manifestations are distinctive and lead to the initial diagnosis. The patients often have a narrow, high-arched palate; prolonged retention of deciduous teeth, and delay or complete failure of eruption of permanent teeth; also present are supernumerary teeth. Two female patients, 25 and 21 years old, visited the stomatology clinic complaining about the presence of deciduous teeth. One presented with supernumeraries, an arched palate, and was characterized as brachycephalic. She reported delay in the closure of sutures. The other one had a prominent forehead. Panoramic radiographs were required. Both patients were diagnosed with cleidocranial dysplasia and referred for dental treatment.

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are widely used as first-line therapy for osteoporosis or metastasis of malignant neoplasms to bone. However, one of the severe late complications of the long-time use of BPs is ...bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). Osteonecrosis of the jaws can affect quality of life because of feeding limitations and intense pain. This case report demonstrates the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in a bisphosphonate-related lesion, in a 75-year-old female who used alendronate for 7 years. Clinical examination revealed a firm lesion with ulcerated center, about 3 cm, located in the hard palate. The diagnostic of BRONJ was clinically established and the decision was to initiate photodynamic therapy (PDT) mediated by methylene blue. Laser treatment was provided weekly for a total of 7 treatment sessions. Follow-up examination 3 months later showed no evidence of recurrence.

The aim of this study was to evaluate most diagnosed lesions and epidemiologic characteristics of patients attended in an oral medicine service between the years 2014 and 2016.
The sample was ...composed by charts compiled at the clinic's archive. Those considered incomplete were excluded. The final sample was 144, whose extracted data were analyzed and plotted. This study was approved by the institutional ethics committee.
There was a greater presence of female patients (n = 86). A greater proportion of these patients in the age group of 40 to 49 years and 60 to 69 years (n = 18, each) was observed, while male patients were between 60 and 69 years (n = 14). Also, it was observed that the majority of the patients of both sexes declared themselves as white. Benign soft tissue tumors were the most diagnosed lesion group (n = 15) followed by dermatologic diseases (n = 13) and potentially malignant and development disorders (n = 11, each). Finally, agreement percentage between initial and final diagnostic was 92%.
The population attended consisted mostly of white women (40-69 years old), with benign soft-tissue tumors being the most diagnosed group of lesions. The high agreement between initial and final diagnosis is of utmost importance, evidencing the quality of the attendance.

Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm originating in the epithelial tissue with multifactorial etiology, including tobacco, alcohol, and ultraviolet radiation. The aim of this study is to ...report a case in which its location is unusual, the buccal mucosa. A 94-year-old woman came to the stomatology clinic complaining that she had a lesion with a burning sensation on the left side of the buccal mucosa. During the anamnesis, she reported being hypertensive, having dyslipidemia and Alzheimer disease; in addition, she denied a history of smoking or alcohol use. During the physical examination an exophytic lesion was observed, with an undefined edge, verrucous surface, sessile, secluded, whitish-red coloration, firm consistency, and approximately 5 cm in size. The diagnostic hypotheses were verrucous carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. An incisional biopsy was performed and histopathologic exam showed squamous cell carcinoma. The patient was referred for surgical treatment and after 6 months no signs of return were observed.

This study reports the occurrence of a granular cell tumor (GCT) and a subgemmal neurogenous plaque (SNP) in the same anatomic location. A female white 59-year-old patient presented with an ...asymptomatic fibrous nodule located in the right posterior border of the tongue. A second, slightly erythematous, hyperplastic lesion behind the first one was identified. Both lesions were submitted for excisional biopsy. Histopathologic analysis revealed a GCT and an SNP. GCT is an uncommon, benign, soft tissue neoplasm. It presents as an asymptomatic fibrous submucosal nodule. The SNP is a biphasic structure found in the lateral posterior region of the tongue, characterized as nerve plexus aggregates and ganglion cells. The patient is under follow-up care and after 1 year, no relapses were observed. The authors believe that this is the first case showing the association between GCT and SNP.

Polymorphous adenocarcinoma is a malignant salivary gland neoplasm that predominantly occurs in the minor salivary gland. Although 65% of the cases have a preferential localization in the palate, the ...tumor is also reported in the lip and buccal mucosa. The aim of this study is to report a case of polymorphous adenocarcinoma in a 69-year-old female patient who presented with an asymptomatic and normochromic nodule of unknown duration located in the left buccal mucosa, next to the parotid duct. An incisional biopsy was performed, and the microscopic analysis revealed proliferation of epithelial cells organized in solid and cribriform structures with perineural invasion. The final diagnosis of polymorphous adenocarcinoma was obtained. The patient was submitted to surgical treatment, and no recurrences were detected after 6 months of follow-up.
