We describe the infrared properties of sources detected over ~36 deg^2 of sky in the GAMA 15-hr equatorial field, using data from both the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large-Area Survey (H-ATLAS) ...and Wide-field Infrared Survey (WISE). With 5-sigma point-source depths of 34 and 0.048 mJy at 250 micron and 3.4 micron, respectively, we are able to identify 50.6% of the H-ATLAS sources in the WISE survey, corresponding to a surface density of ~630 deg^{-2}. Approximately two-thirds of these sources have measured spectroscopic or optical/near-IR photometric redshifts of z<1. For sources with spectroscopic redshifts at z<0.3, we find a linear correlation between the infrared luminosity at 3.4 micron and that at 250 micron, with +-50% scatter over ~1.5 orders of magnitude in luminosity, ~10^9 - 10^{10.5} L_sun. By contrast, the matched sources without previously measured redshifts (r>~20.5) have 250-350 micron flux density ratios that suggest either high-redshift galaxies (z>~1.5) or optically faint low-redshift galaxies with unusually low temperatures (T<~20). Their small 3.4-250 micron flux ratios favor a high-redshift galaxy population, as only the most actively star-forming galaxies at low redshift (e.g., Arp 220) exhibit comparable flux density ratios. Furthermore, we find a relatively large AGN fraction (~30%) in a 12 micron flux-limited subsample of H-ATLAS sources, also consistent with there being a significant population of high-redshift sources in the no-redshift sample.
We describe the reduction of data taken with the PACS instrument on board the Herschel Space Observatory in the Science Demonstration Phase of the Herschel-ATLAS (H-ATLAS) survey, specifically data ...obtained for a 4x4-deg^2 region using Herschel's fast-scan (60 arcsec/s) parallel mode. We describe in detail a pipeline for data reduction using customised procedures within HIPE from data retrieval to the production of science-quality images. We found that the standard procedure for removing Cosmic-Ray glitches also removed parts of bright sources and so implemented an effective two-stage process to minimise these problems. The pronounced 1/f noise is removed from the timelines using 3.4- and 2.5-arcmin boxcar high-pass filters at 100 and 160-um. Empirical measurements of the point-spread function (PSF) are used to determine the encircled energy fraction as a function of aperture size. For the 100- and 160-um bands, the effective PSFs are ~9 and ~13 arcsec (FWHM), and the 90-per-cent encircled energy radii are 13 and 18 arcsec. Astrometric accuracy is good to ~<2 arcsec. The noise in the final maps is correlated between neighbouring pixels and rather higher than advertised prior to launch. For a pair of cross-scans, the 5-sigma point-source sensitivities are 125-165 mJy for 9-13-arcsec radius apertures at 100-um and 150-240 mJy for 13-18-arcsec radius apertures at 160-um.
We have analysed the 24um properties of a radio-selected sample in the Subaru-XMM/Newton Deep Field in order to explore the behaviour of the FIR/radio relation at high redshifts. Statistically, the ...correlation is described by q24, the ratio between the observed flux densities at 24um and 1.4GHz, respectively. Using 24um data results in considerably more scatter in the correlation than previous work using data at 60-70um. Nevertheless, we do observe a steady correlation as a function of redshift, up to z~3.5, suggesting its validity back to primeval times. We find q24 = 0.30 +/- 0.56 for the observed and q24 = 0.71 +/- 0.47 for the k-corrected radio sample, based on sources with 300uJy < S(1.4GHz) < 3.2mJy and 24um detections. A suitable k-correction given by a M82-like mid-IR template suggests no extreme silicate absorption in the bulk of our radio sample. Using thresholds in q24 to identify radio-excess sources, we have been able to characterise the transition from radio-loud AGN to star-forming galaxies and radio-quiet AGN at faint (<1mJy) radio flux densities. Our results are in broad agreement with previous studies which show a dominant radio-loud AGN population at >1mJy. The rest-frame U-B colours of the expected radio-excess population have redder distribution than those that follow the correlation. This is therefore a promising way to select obscured Type-2 AGN, with a radio loud nature, missed by deep X-ray observations. Spectroscopic follow-up of these sources is required to fully test this method.
We describe multi-frequency data designed to probe the emission mechanism that dominates in faint radio sources. Our analysis is based on observations of the Lockman Hole using the GMRT - the deepest ...610-MHz imaging yet reported - together with 1.4-GHz imaging from the VLA, well matched in resolution and sensitivity to the GMRT data. The GMRT and VLA data are cross-matched to obtain the radio spectral indices for the faint radio emitters. Statistical analyses show no clear evolution for the median spectral index, alpha, as a function of flux density. alpha is found to be -0.6 to -0.7, based on an almost unbiased 10-sigma criterion, down to a flux level of S(1.4GHz) >~ 100uJy. The fraction of inverted spectrum sources (alpha > 0) is less than 10%. The results suggest that the most prevalent emission mechanism in the sub-mJy regime is optically-thin synchrotron, ruling out a dominant flat spectrum or ultra-steep spectrum radio population. The spectral index distribution has a significant scatter, 0.4-0.5, which suggests a mixture of different populations at all flux levels. Spectroscopic classification of radio sources with X-ray emission has allowed us to estimate that the fraction of radio-quiet AGN at 30 <~ S(1.4GHz) < 300uJy is roughly 25 +/- 10%, suggesting that star-forming galaxies dominate the sub-mJy regime.
Spitzer spectroscopy has revealed that ~80% of submm galaxies (SMGs) are starburst (SB) dominated in the mid-infrared. Here we focus on the remaining ~20% that show signs of harboring powerful active ...galactic nuclei (AGN). We have obtained Spitzer-IRS spectroscopy of a sample of eight SMGs which are candidates for harboring powerful AGN on the basis of IRAC color-selection (S8/S4.5>2; i.e. likely power-law mid-infrared SEDs). SMGs with an AGN dominating (>50%) their mid-infrared emission could represent `missing link' sources in an evolutionary sequence involving a major merger. First of all, we detect PAH features in all of the SMGs, indicating redshifts from 2.5-3.4, demonstrating the power of the mid-infrared to determine redshifts for these optically faint dusty galaxies. Secondly, we see signs of both star-formation (from the PAH features) and AGN activity (from continuum emission) in our sample: 62% of the sample are AGN-dominated in the mid-infrared with a median AGN content of 56%, compared with <30% on average for typical SMGs, revealing that our IRAC color selection has successfully singled out sources with proportionately more AGN emission than typical SB-dominated SMGs. However, we find that only about 10% of these AGN dominate the bolometric emission of the SMG when the results are extrapolated to longer infrared wavelengths, implying that AGN are not a significant power source to the SMG population overall, even when there is evidence in the mid-infrared for substantial AGN activity. When existing samples of mid-infrared AGN-dominated SMGs are considered, we find that S8/S4.5>1.65 works well at selecting mid-infrared energetically dominant AGN in SMGs, implying a duty cycle of ~15% if all SMGs go through a subsequent mid-infrared AGN-dominated phase in the proposed evolutionary sequence.
We investigate the correlation between far-infrared (FIR) and radio luminosities in distant galaxies, a lynchpin of modern astronomy. We use data from the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimetre ...Telescope (BLAST), Spitzer, the Large Apex BOlometer CamerA (LABOCA), the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Giant Metre-wave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS). For a catalogue of BLAST 250-micron-selected galaxies, we re-measure the 70--870-micron flux densities at the positions of their most likely 24-micron counterparts, which have a median interquartile redshift of 0.74 0.25, 1.57. From these, we determine the monochromatic flux density ratio, q_250 = log_10 (S_250micron / S_1400MHz), and the bolometric equivalent, q_IR. At z ~= 0.6, where our 250-micron filter probes rest-frame 160-micron emission, we find no evolution relative to q_160 for local galaxies. We also stack the FIR and submm images at the positions of 24-micron- and radio-selected galaxies. The difference between q_IR seen for 250-micron- and radio-selected galaxies suggests star formation provides most of the IR luminosity in ~< 100-uJy radio galaxies, but rather less for those in the mJy regime. For the 24-micron sample, the radio spectral index is constant across 0 < z < 3, but q_IR exhibits tentative evidence of a steady decline such that q_IR is proportional to (1+z)^(-0.15 +/- 0.03) - significant evolution, spanning the epoch of galaxy formation, with major implications for techniques that rely on the FIR/radio correlation. We compare with model predictions and speculate that we may be seeing the increase in radio activity that gives rise to the radio background.
We report on the identification of the highest redshift submm-selected source currently known: LESSJ033229.4-275619. This source was detected in the Large Apex BOlometer CAmera (LABOCA) Extended ...Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS) Submillimetre Survey (LESS), a sensitive 870-um survey (~1.2-mJy rms) of the full 30'x30' ECDFS with the LABOCA camera on the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope. The submm emission is identified with a radio counterpart for which optical spectroscopy provides a redshift of z=4.76. We show that the bolometric emission is dominated by a starburst with a star formation rate of ~1000 Msun/yr, although we also identify a moderate luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) in this galaxy. Thus it has characteristics similar to those of z~2 submm galaxies (SMGs), with a mix of starburst and obscured AGN signatures. This demonstrates that ultraluminous starburst activity is not just restricted to the hosts of the most luminous (and hence rare) QSOs at z~5, but was also occurring in less extreme galaxies at a time when the Universe was less than 10% of its current age. Assuming that we are seeing the major phase of star formation in this galaxy, then we demonstrate that it would be identified as a luminous distant red galaxy at z~3 and that the current estimate of the space density of z>4 SMGs is only sufficient to produce ~10% of the luminous red galaxy population at these early times. However, this leaves open the possibility that some of these galaxies formed through less intense, but more extended star formation events. If the progenitors of all of the luminous red galaxies at z~3 go through an ultraluminous starburst at z>4 then the required volume density of z>4 SMGs will exceed that predicted by current galaxy formation models by more than an order of magnitude.
In this paper we use ASPECS, the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field in band. 3 and band. 6, to place blind constraints on the CO luminosity function and the evolution of the ...cosmic molecular gas density as a function of redshift up to z similar to 4.5. This study is based on galaxies that have been selected solely through their CO emission and not through any other property. In all of the redshift bins the ASPECS measurements reach the predicted "knee" of the CO luminosity function (around 5 x 10(9) K km s(-1) pc(2)). We find clear evidence of an evolution in the CO luminosity function with respect to z similar to 0, with more CO-luminous galaxies present at z similar to 2. The observed galaxies at z similar to 2 also appear more gas-rich than predicted by recent semi-analytical models. The comoving cosmic molecular gas density within galaxies as a function of redshift shows a drop by a factor of 3-10 from z similar to 2 to z similar to 0 (with significant error bars), and possibly a decline at z > 3. This trend is similar to the observed evolution of the cosmic star formation rate density. The latter therefore appears to be at least partly driven by the increased availability of molecular gas reservoirs at the peak of cosmic star formation (z similar to 2).
We present the rationale for and the observational description of ASPECS: the ALMA SPECtroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (UDF), the cosmological deep field that has the deepest ...multi-wavelength data available. Our overarching goal is to obtain an unbiased census of molecular gas and dust continuum emission in high-redshift (z > 0.5) galaxies. The similar to 1' region covered within the UDF was chosen to overlap with the deepest available imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope. Our ALMA observations consist of full frequency scans in band. 3 (84-115 GHz) and band. 6 (212-272 GHz) at approximately uniform line sensitivity (L'(CO) similar to 2 x 10(9) K km s(-1) pc(2)), and continuum noise levels of 3.8 mu Jy beam(-1) and 12.7 ae Jy beam(-1), respectively. The molecular surveys cover the different rotational transitions of the CO molecule, leading to essentially full redshift coverage. The C II emission line is also covered at redshifts 6.0 < z < 8.0. We present a customized algorithm to identify line candidates in the molecular line scans. and quantify our ability to recover artificial sources from our data. Based on whether multiple CO lines are detected, and whether optical spectroscopic redshifts as well as optical counterparts exist, we constrain the most likely line identification. We report 10 (11) CO line candidates in the 3mm (1mm) band, and our statistical analysis shows that < 4 of these (in each band) are likely spurious. Less than one-third. of the total CO flux in the low-J CO line candidates are from sources that are not associated with an optical/NIR counterpart. We also present continuum maps of both the band. 3 and band. 6 observations. The data presented here form the basis of a number of dedicated studies that are presented in subsequent papers.
