Costunolide (COST) is a sesquiterpene lactone that belongs to the germacranolide group, and occurs mainly in Saussurea lappa Clarke. Although COST inhibits the proliferation and metastasis of cancer ...cells and induces their apoptosis, it suffers poor water solubility and cellular permeability. Therefore, this study aimed to enhance the anti-proliferative activity of COST in LS174T colon cancer cells through its inclusion in bilosomal nanoformulation (COST-BILs). The optimized BIL formula contained cholesterol and Span-85 in a molar ratio of 1:5 as well as bile salt at a molar concentration of 0.5 mM, with entrapment efficiency of 63.4 ± 3.59 % and particle size of 119.7 ± 3.63 nm. The optimized COST-BILs showed a potent cytotoxic effect against LS174T cells with an IC50 of 6.20 µM; meanwhile, raw COST had an IC50 of 15.78 µM. Safety and relative selectivity were confirmed in the normal human colonic epithelial cells (HCoEpC). Cell cycle analysis indicated that both raw COST and COST-BILs significantly increased the fraction of LS174T cells in the sub-G1 phase. This was accompanied by a significant enhancement of early, late, and total apoptosis, as indicated by annexin-V staining. In addition, COST-BILs exhibited more potent activity in up-regulating CASP3, TP53, and BAX, and in down-regulating the expression of BCL2 mRNA as compared to raw COST. Further, the prepared formula enhanced the release of cytochrome C as well as the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced the integrity of mitochondrial membranes. In conclusion, the loading of COST on BILs significantly enhances its pro-apoptotic activity in LS174T cells.
•Loading of COST on BILs enhances its pro-apoptotic activity in LS174T cells.•COST-BILs exhibited more potent activity in up-regulating CASP3, TP53, and BAX.•COST-BILs down-regulated the expression of BCL2 mRNA as compared to raw COST.•Safety and selectivity were confirmed in the normal human colonic epithelial cells.

► Synthesis and characterization of PAA/PEG adduct. ► Its application as sizing and stiffening agent for cotton cellulose. ► Its utilization for loading Ag or TiO2-nanoparticles onto fabric surface. ...► Functionalization of cellulose-containing fabrics.
Aqueous polymerization of partially neutralized acrylic acid (AA) along with polyethylene glycol (PEG-600) at AA/PEG-600 mass ratio 3/1 using ammonium persulfate as initiator under proper conditions results in formation of PAA/PEG-600 adduct. The structure of the adduct was confirmed by FT-IR spectra. The potential applications of the prepared adduct in: sizing, durable hand building of cotton cellulose, as well as in functional finishing of cellulose containing fabrics, i.e. cotton, viscose and cotton/polyester, with Ag- or TiO2-nanoparticles were investigated. The modified substrates using the prepared adduct showed a remarkable improvement in their sizing, hand building and/or functional properties, i.e. antibacterial, anti-UV, and self cleaning, in addition to durability to wash. TEM images of the prepared nano-particles, SEM images of the untreated and treated substrates, as well as EDX spectra to analyze the surface elemental compositions were examined. The tentative mechanisms were also suggested.

•Mixed-model parallel two-sided assembly line balancing problem (MPTALBP) is studied.•Agent based ant colony approach enhanced with 10 heuristics is developed.•Ants have opportunity ...to randomly select one of those heuristic search behaviors.•A new modified lower bound formulation is proposed for MPTALBP.•Statistical tests prove the benefits of the proposed system and the algorithm.
Assembly lines are frequently used as a production method to assemble complex products. Two-sided assembly lines are utilized to assemble large-sized products (e.g., cars, buses, trucks). Locating two lines in parallel helps improve line efficiency by enabling collaboration between the line workers. This paper proposes a mixed-model parallel two-sided assembly line system that can be utilized to produce large-sized items in an inter-mixed sequence. The mixed-model parallel two-sided line balancing problem is defined and the advantages of utilizing multi-line stations across the lines are discussed. A flexible agent-based ant colony optimization algorithm is developed to solve the problem and a numerical example is given to explain the method systematically. The proposed algorithm builds flexible balancing solutions suitable for any model sequence launched. The dynamically changing workloads of workstations (based on specific product models during the production process) are also explored. A comprehensive experimental study is conducted and the results are statistically analyzed using the well-known paired sample t-test. The test results indicate that the mixed-model parallel two-sided assembly line system reduces the workforce need in comparison with separately balanced mixed-model two-sided lines. It is also shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms the tabu search algorithm and six heuristics often used in the assembly line balancing domain.

Findings from health services research highlight continuing health care disparities in the United States, especially in the areas of access to health care and quality of care. Although attention to ...health care disparities has increased, considerable knowledge gaps still exist. A better understanding of how cultural, behavioral, and health system factors converge and contribute to unequal access and differential care is needed. Research-informed approaches for reducing health care disparities that are feasible and capable of sustained implementation are needed to inform policymakers. More important, for health equity to be achieved, it is essential to create a health care system that provides access, removes barriers to care, and provides equally effective treatment to all persons living in the United States.

Homozygous frameshift mutation in RUBCN (KIAA0226), known to result in endolysosomal machinery defects, has previously been reported in a single Saudi family with autosomal recessive spinocerebellar ...ataxia (Salih ataxia, SCAR15, OMIM # 615705). The present report describes the clinical, neurophysiologic, neuroimaging, and genetic findings in a second unrelated Saudi family with two affected children harboring identical homozygous frameshift mutation in the gene. It also explores and documents an ancient founder cerebellar ataxia mutation in the Arabian Peninsula.
The present family has two affected males (aged 6.5 and 17 years) with unsteady gait apparent since learning to walk at 2.5 and 3 years, respectively. The younger patient showed gait ataxia and normal reflexes. The older patient had saccadic eye movement, dysarthria, mild upper and lower limb and gait ataxia (on tandem walking), and enhanced reflexes in the lower limbs. Cognitive abilities were mildly impaired in the younger sibling (IQ 67) and borderline in the older patient (IQ 72). Nerve conduction studies were normal in both patients. MRI was normal at 2.5 years in the younger sibling. Brain MRI showed normal cerebellar volume and folia in the older sibling at the age of 6 years, and revealed minimal superior vermian atrophy at the age of 16 years. Autozygome and exome analysis showed both affected have previously reported homoallelic mutation in RUBCN (NM_014687:exon18:c.2624delC:p.A875fs), whereas the parents are carriers. Autozygosity mapping focused on smallest haplotype on chromosome 3 and mutation age analysis revealed the mutation occurred approximately 1550 years ago spanning about 62 generations.
Our findings validate the slowly progressive phenotype of Salih ataxia (SCAR15, OMIM # 615705) by an additional family. Haplotype sharing attests to a common founder, an ancient RUBCN mutation in the Arab population.

•La0.8Na0.2-xLixMnO3 (x = 0 – 0.15) monovalent-doped manganite are synthesized by solid state method.•The influence of A site disorder on electroresistance effect (ER) has been studied.•Resistivity ...significantly dropped for all samples with the increased in applied current.•Li substitution at x = 0.15 induce Griffith phase (GP) and enhance ER effect at 300 K.•The increased of A site disorder contributes to strong lattice distortion and induce presence of GP.
The effects of Li substitution on structural, magnetic properties, and electroresistance (ER) behaviour in La0.8Na0.2-xLixMnO3 (x = 0 – 0.15) manganites prepared via the conventional solid-state method were reported. All samples exhibited a metal–insulator transition behaviour with a decrease in the metal–insulator transition temperature, TMI from 270 K (x = 0) to 255 K (x = 0.15) and reduction in Curie temperature, TC from 272 K (x = 0.10) to 235 K (x = 0.15). All samples exhibited a reduction in resistivity under higher applied current of 5 mA than that of 1 mA, which led to an ER effect. Large ER value of −59 % is achieved for sample × = 0.15 at 300 K, thereby indicating its potential application for spintronic-based devices. The competition between the occurrence of lattice distortion and the presence of magnetic inhomogeneity induced by A-site disorder (σ2) is suggested responsible for the observed ER effect.

Recently, graph-based semi-supervised learning (GSSL) has received much attention. On the other hand, less attention has been paid to the problem of large-scale GSSL for inductive multi-class ...classification. Existing scalable GSSL methods rely on a hard linear constraint. They cannot predict the labelling of test samples, or use predefined graphs, which limits their applications and performance. In this paper, we propose an inductive algorithm that can handle large databases by using anchors. The main contribution compared to existing scalable semi-supervised models is the integration of the anchor graph computation into the learned model. We develop a criterion to jointly estimate the unlabeled sample labels, the mapping of the feature space to the label space, and the affinity matrix of the anchor graph. Furthermore, the fusion of labels and features of anchors is used to construct the graph. Using the projection matrix, it can also predict the labels of the test samples by linear transformation. Experimental results on the large datasets NORB, RCV1 and Covtype show the effectiveness, scalability and superiority of the proposed method. Fipronil (FPN), a phenylpyrazole insecticide, has been receiving increased attention owing to its toxicity, which is largely mediated through its effects on antioxidant systems. The present study was ...undertaken to assess the effects of resveratrol (RSV) and curcumin (CUR) on oxidative damage induced by FPN. Forty mature male Wistar rats were randomized into five groups (
n
= 8 per group): the first group was the control; the second was administered FPN (10 mg/kg); and the third, fourth, and fifth were co-treated with RSV (10 mg/kg), CUR (200 mg/kg), and their combination, respectively, 2 h prior to FPN administration. All animals were dosed via oral gavage for 4 weeks. FPN significantly (
p
< 0.05) elevated the sera of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), urea, creatinine, and cholesterol levels, whereas serum total protein, albumin, and triglyceride levels were significantly (
p
< 0.05) decreased, compared to those of the control group. Reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) were decreased (
p
< 0.05) in the FPN-treated group compared to those in the control group; however, malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) levels were markedly increased (
p
< 0.05) in the hepatic, renal, and brain tissues. Co-treatment with RSV or CUR alleviated (
p
˂ 0.05) the increased lipid peroxidation and changes in enzymatic/nonenzymatic antioxidants induced by FPN; all these variables mostly returned to normal levels with the combined of RSV and CUR treatment. In conclusion, RSV and/or CUR relieved and synergistically reversed the FPN-induced tissue oxidative injury, probably by improving the antioxidant defenses via their free radical scavenging and antioxidant characteristics.
In this paper, the physical and structural properties of the natural agarwood and inoculated agarwood using Roselle-based inoculation had been discussed. The results showed that a high volume of oil ...obtained on day 1 by the inoculated agarwood which yielded 3ml of the agarwood oil as compared to the natural agarwood that had yielded only 2.3ml. In the chemical analysis, five major compounds were detected by FTIR which were C-O bond (aromatic alkane), C-C stretching (aromatic alkane), C-O stretching (ether) and C-H bond (aromatic ring) in both oils. Moreover, the inoculated agarwood exhibited better oil production compared to the natural agarwood.
