A novel polysaccharide extracted from green algae Chaetomorpha linum (PS) was characterized, using infrared spectroscopy, HPLC-FID, gel filtration high-pressure chromatography, thin layer ...chromatography and spectrum visible UV. Natural antioxidant potential of PS was evaluated based on DPPH free radical, ferrous iron–chelating, β carotene bleaching inhibition activities and DNA nicking assay. Functional properties were estimated based on Water Holding Capacity (WHC), Oil Holding Capacity (OHC), emulsifying activity and foaming ability. Overall, data showed attractive chemical, functional and biological properties with an antioxidant capacity of PS in beef sausages during storage for 12 days. Indeed, as compared to standard formulation (with addition of vitamin C), samples formulated with PS presented lower values in terms of lipid oxidation (TBARS, MetMb), while preserving color properties compared with untreated samples. Furthermore, lower changes in pH, moisture, and the highest values of heme iron were obtained. Successful inhibition of microbial proliferation was proved. Endowed with high antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, PS could thus be used as a natural conservative in functional foods.

The present study aimed to evaluate the potential protective and antioxidant effect of polysaccharides (PS) extracted from Ulva lactuca against thiacloprid (THC) induced nephrotoxicity and ...hepatotoxicity. The antioxidant capacity of PS was tested in vitro using ABTS radical scavenging activity and plasmid DNA cleavage assays andin vivo on adult male rats treated for 30 days. Animals were allocated into four groups: control; THC (22.5 mg/kg); THC (22.5 mg/kg) + PS1 (100 mg/kg diet); and THC (22.5 mg/kg) + PS2 (200 mg/kg diet). The structural features of PS were determined by Fourier transformed infrared (FT‐IR), UV absorption peak detection, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gel permeation chromatography, and also functional properties were investigated. Overall, results indicated that THC increased significantly malondialdehyde, advanced oxidation protein products, glutathione levels, which is correlated with severe histological and plasmatic biochemical injuries in both liver and kidney tissues. However, cotreatment PS induced a significant protective and healing affects against the nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxcity induced by THC.

Maintaining the quality and stability of functional meat products during storage is one of the major challenges of these products. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of ...polysaccharides extracted from green alga Bryopsis plumosa as a new natural additive in the formulation of beef sausages. In order to evaluate the impact of the incorporation of polysaccharides in beef sausages formulation, the physico-chemical, microbiological, and antioxidant properties were investigated during 12 days of storage at 4°C. Obtained data illustrated that the addition of this polymer in the formulation of beef sausages leads to a distinct antioxidant activity during 12 days of storage (4°C) with lower values in terms of lipid peroxidation compared to untreated samples. In addition, samples formulated with polysaccharides reduced the oxidation of Myoglobin, which consequently improved the color stability of meat during refrigerated storage. Furthermore, as compared to standard formulation, the addition of polysaccharides appears to have interesting antimicrobial potential that maintains sausage quality within a shelf life of 12 days. In conclusion, our results prove the efficiency of polysaccharides in providing more hygienic and safer meat products, which may suggest that PS could be used as a natural additive in functional foods.

Four specific PCR fragments were designed to amplify four high-frequency rs2735940, rs2736098, rs2736100, and rs10069690 SNPs within the TERT gene. Single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) followed by sequencing reactions were used for genotyping and validating the amplified fragments.
The present study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant effects of polysaccharide (PS) isolated from Balangu Shirazi (Lallemantia royleana) seeds in vitro as well as on the hypercholesterolemic ...diet-induced liver and kidney injury in adult rats. PS was structurally characterized by Fourier-transformed infrared, which confirmed the presence of bands characteristic of polysaccharides. Functional properties of PS were investigated based on water solubility index, holding and emulsifying capacities. The antioxidant activities were confirmed by DPPH radical scavenging assays, reducing power and the chelating effect assay. The administration of PS to a hypercholesterolemic diet for 30 days in Wistar rats significantly improved the liver and kidney levels in malondialdehyde, advanced oxidation protein products, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and in vitamin C. The oxidative stress profile was confirmed by hematological and plasma biochemical parameters. In addition, histological alterations were significantly ameliorated in liver and kidney tissues. The study strengthens the hypothesis that the herbal polysaccharide can be used as a novel antioxidant and hypocholesterolemic compound against hyperlipidemia-induced atherosclerosis.

mg/kg of diet) for 3 weeks. Exposure of rats to chromium promoted oxidative stress with an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and a decrease in glutathione (GSH) levels. A decrease in glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and an increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were observed. Se supplementation to the diet of group III improved all the parameters cited above. Yet, plasma transaminases (AST and ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities, cholesterol, triglycerides (TG) and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels increased, while high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) decreased. Co-administration of Se to the diet of group III restored hepatic markers to near-normal values. The biochemical results confirmed the histopathological findings. The present work deals with the development of novel biopolymer-based composite hydrogels (HGs) based on chitosan and protein isolate derived from marine byproducts, and their functional ...applications. Chitosan (Cs) from blue crab shells and bluefin tuna protein isolate (BTPI) were selected to prepare composite hydrogels. The data from the characterization demonstrated that by increasing the BTPI content to 20% (w/w, Cs), hydrogels became more porous, elastic, and mechanically stable. Furthermore, all HGs present good antioxidant activity in a BTPI concentration-dependent manner. Based on the overall structural, swelling, and mechanical properties, HG-20 was selected for in-vitro release study of phycocyanin. Release patterns show that HG-20 is able to release phycocyanin (Ph) under acidic and neutral microenvironments. The local application of HG-20 loaded or not by Ph for wound repair in rats’ models was further studied. All tested HG exhibited an interesting wound healing-promoting ability. Importantly, Ph-loaded HG-20 has been found to accelerate wound closure, compared to unloaded HG-20.

Sulfated polysaccharides from seaweed are highly active natural substances with valuable applications. In the present paper, attempts have been made to discuss the physicochemical and structural ...features of polysaccharides isolated from red marine alga Alsidium corallinum (ACPs) and their protective effect in hepatic impairments induced by tebuconazole (TEB) in male adult rats. Structural features were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography, Fourier-transformed infrared, and solid-state 1H and 13C-Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. ACPs are found to be hetero-sulfated-anionic polysaccharides that contain carbohydrates, sulfate groups, and uronic acids. In vitro biological activities suggested the effective antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities of ACPs. For antioxidant testing in vivo, the biochemical analysis and plasma profiles displayed that oral administration of ACPs could mitigate blood lipid indicators, including total cholesterol, triglyceride, low and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and bilirubin. Liver function indexes involving alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase showed that ACPs possessed prominent antioxidant activities. Additionally, the intervention of ACPs potentially inhibited lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, key enzymes of lipid metabolism (<0.001), and improved antioxidant status (<0.05). Histomorphological observation confirmed that ACPs intervention could partially repair liver injuries caused by TEB. The computational results showed that A. corallinum monosaccharides bound 1JIJ, 1HD2, and 1WL4 receptors with acceptable affinities, which, together with deep embedding and molecular interactions, support the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and hypolipidemic outlined effects in the in vitro and in vivo findings. Given their prominent antioxidant effects, ACPs are promising candidates for liver diseases and must be considered in pharmaceutical applications.

MB, a Mn-containing ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate fungicide, induced oxidative stress damages, mineral perturbations in the plasma, urine, and bone, and genotoxicity in rats. Hematological analysis revealed in the MB-treated group a disruption in the number of red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells associated with a striking genotoxicity. Interestingly, a significant increase in malondialdehyde and advanced oxidation protein product levels in erythrocytes and bones were found. On the other hand, an impairment of the antioxidant status in both tissues was occurred. Along, our results revealed that MB injection caused a striking drop and disruption in bone’s mineral rates, especially calcium and phosphorus. These biochemical results were in accordance with the histological and molecular changes. However, co-treatment with
C. canaliculatus
extract showed, for the first time, that this alga was effective against MB-induced hematotoxicity, genotoxicity, and oxidative stress in the blood and bone and maintained osteomineral metabolism and bone histo-architecture. Such observations might be explained by the strong in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial activities exhibited by the alga, as well as by its high levels in several minerals: calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, and zinc.
