A search for paraphotons, or hidden U(1) gauge bosons, is performed using an intense X-ray beamline at SPring-8. “Light Shining through a Wall” technique is used in this search. No excess of events ...above background is observed. A stringent constraint is obtained on the photon–paraphoton mixing angle, χ<8.06×10−5 (95% C.L.) for 0.04 eV<mγ′<26 keV.

Reticulon 4 receptor (RTN4R) plays an essential role in regulating axonal regeneration and plasticity in the central nervous system through the activation of rho kinase, and is located within ...chromosome 22q11.2, a region that is known to be a hotspot for schizophrenia (SCZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Recently, rare variants such as copy-number variants and single-nucleotide variants have been a focus of research because of their large effect size associated with increased susceptibility to SCZ and ASD and the possibility of elucidating the pathophysiology of mental disorder through functional analysis of the discovered rare variants. To discover rare variants with large effect size and to evaluate their role in the etiopathophysiology of SCZ and ASD, we sequenced the RTN4R coding exons with a sample comprising 370 SCZ and 192 ASD patients, and association analysis using a large number of unrelated individuals (1716 SCZ, 382 ASD and 4009 controls). Through this mutation screening, we discovered four rare (minor allele frequency <1%) missense mutations (R68H, D259N, R292H and V363M) of RTN4R. Among these discovered rare mutations, R292H was found to be significantly associated with SCZ (P=0.048). Furthermore, in vitro functional assays showed that the R292H mutation affected the formation of growth cones. This study strengthens the evidence for association between rare variants within RTN4R and SCZ, and may shed light on the molecular mechanisms underlying the neurodevelopmental disorder.
We have developed a 120-GHz-band wireless link whose maximum transmission data rate is 11.1 Gbit/s. The wireless link uses millimeter-wave monolithic integrated circuits (MMICs) for the generation of ...a 120-GHz-band millimeter-wave wireless signal. The MMICs were fabricated using 0.1-mum-gate InP-HEMTs and coplanar waveguides. The wireless link can handle four kinds of data rate for OC-192 and 10-Gbit Ethernet standards with and without forward error correction (FEC). We succeeded in the error-free transmission of a 10-Gbit/s signal over a distance of 800 m. The introduction of FEC into the 120-GHz-band wireless link decreased the minimum received power for error-free transmission, and improved the reliability of the link.
Non-inductive plasma current start-up and sustainment by waves in the lower-hybrid frequency range (200 MHz) have been studied on the TST-2 spherical tokamak (R0 0.38 m, a 0.25 m, Bt0 0.3 T, Ip 0.14 ...MA) using three types of antenna: the 11-element inductively-coupled combline antenna, the dielectric loaded 4-waveguide array antenna, and the 13-element capacitively-coupled combline (CCC) antenna. The maximum plasma currents of 15 kA, 10 kA and 16 kA were achieved, respectively. The highest current drive figure of merit was achieved by the CCC antenna. The efficiency of current drive should improve by reducing prompt orbit losses of high energy electrons by operating at higher plasma current (to improve orbit confinement) and higher toroidal magnetic field (to improve wave accessibility to the plasma core), while keeping the density high enough (to avoid excessive acceleration of electrons), but under the 'density limit'.
Plasma current start-up and ramp-up using the lower hybrid wave (LHW) were investigated on the TST-2 spherical tokamak. The LHW was launched by a dielectric-loaded waveguide array (grill) antenna. ...The antenna-plasma coupling of this antenna deteriorates as the input power exceeds several kW. This deterioration is believed to be caused by the density depletion due to the ponderomotive force. This conjecture was confirmed by the measurement of density reduction and the result of a non-linear full wave numerical calculation based on the finite element method (FEM). The plasma current was started and ramped up to 10 kA using this antenna. The ability of this grill antenna to excite the LHW with different n = ck /ω was used to identify the most favourable n spectrum for plasma current ramp-up. It was found that effective current drive can be achieved by the LHW with n less than 6. However, even in this case, the energetic electrons which account for a large fraction of the driven current, are lost rapidly because the poloidal field generated by this level of plasma current is not sufficient to confine high energy electrons.
Summary
There are two major subpopulations of peripheral helper T lymphocytes: T helper 1 (Th1) and T helper 2 (Th2) cells. Surgical stress increases the number of Th2 cells, and decreases that of ...Th1 cells, resulting in a decrease in the Th1/Th2 ratio, and, consequently, in suppressed cell‐mediated immunity. Since anaesthesia can suppress the stress response to surgery, it may inhibit the decrease in the Th1/Th2 ratio. Using flow cytometry, we studied whether propofol anaesthesia (n = 9) or isoflurane anaesthesia (n = 9) had more effect on the decrease in the Th1/Th2 ratio after surgery in patients undergoing craniotomy. The Th1/Th2 ratio decreased significantly after isoflurane anaesthesia (p = 0.011), while it did not change after propofol anaesthesia. The ratio was significantly lower with isoflurane than propofol (p = 0.009). Propofol anaesthesia attenuated the surgical stress‐induced adverse immune response better than isoflurane anaesthesia.

Several lines of evidence suggest that alterations in circadian rhythms might be associated with the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BP). A recent ...study reported that SIRT1 is a molecule that plays an important role in the circadian clock system. Therefore, to evaluate the association among the SIRT1 gene, schizophrenia and BP, we conducted a case–control study of Japanese population samples (1158 schizophrenia patients, 1008 BP patients and 2127 controls) with four tagging SNPs (rs12778366, rs2273773, rs4746720 and rs10997875) in the SIRT1 gene. Marker‐trait association analysis was used to evaluate the allele and the genotype association with the χ2 test, and haplotype association analysis was evaluated with a likelihood ratio test. We showed an association between rs4746720 in the SIRT1 gene and schizophrenia in the allele and the genotype analysis. However, the significance of these associations did not survive after Bonferroni's correction for multiple testing. On the other hand, the SIRT1 gene was associated with Japanese schizophrenia in a haplotype‐wise analysis (global Pall markers = 4.89 × 10−15). Also, four tagging SNPs in the SIRT1 gene were not associated with BP. In conclusion, the SIRT1 gene may play an important role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia in the Japanese population.
