ABSTRACT
We present optical spectroscopy together with ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared photometry of SN 2019hcc, which resides in a host galaxy at redshift 0.044, displaying a sub-solar ...metallicity. The supernova spectrum near peak epoch shows a ‘w’ shape at around 4000 Å which is usually associated with O ii lines and is typical of Type I superluminous supernovae. SN 2019hcc post-peak spectra show a well-developed H α P-Cygni profile from 19 d past maximum and its light curve, in terms of its absolute peak luminosity and evolution, resembles that of a fast-declining Hydrogen-rich supernova (SN IIL). The object does not show any unambiguous sign of interaction as there is no evidence of narrow lines in the spectra or undulations in the light curve. Our tardis spectral modelling of the first spectrum shows that carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen (CNO) at 19 000 K reproduce the ‘w’ shape and suggests that a combination of non-thermally excited CNO and metal lines at 8000 K could reproduce the feature seen at 4000 Å. The Bolometric light-curve modelling reveals that SN 2019hcc could be fit with a magnetar model, showing a relatively strong magnetic field (B > 3 × 1014 G), which matches the peak luminosity and rise time without powering up the light curve to superluminous luminosities. The high-energy photons produced by the magnetar would then be responsible for the detected O ii lines. As a consequence, SN 2019hcc shows that a ‘w’ shape profile at around 4000 Å, usually attributed to O ii, is not only shown in superluminous supernovae and hence it should not be treated as the sole evidence of the belonging to such a supernova type.

. Hypothalamic protein and mRNA expression of ERα varied during pregnancy with a significant increase at mid-gestation whereas ERβ mRNA expression did not show significant variations. Hypothalamic immunolocalization of ERα was observed in neurons of the diagonal band of Brocca, medial preoptic area (mPOA), periventricular, suprachiasmatic, supraoptic (SON), ventromedial, and arcuate nuclei, and medial eminence, with a similar distribution throughout gestation. In addition, all GnRH neurons of the mPOA and SON showed ERα expression with no differences across the reproductive status. The correlation between GnRH and ERα at mid-gestation, and their co-localization in the hypothalamic neurons of the vizcacha, provides novel information compared with other mammals suggesting a direct action of estrogen as part of a differential reproductive strategy to assure GnRH synthesis during pregnancy.

Complete encasement of the inferior vena cava by retroperitoneal tumors is rare. Although replacement of the vena cava has been considered for various conditions in adults, it is rarely used in ...children except for challenging resections and as a last chance approach – often aiming more at debulking than cure.
From January 2009 to February 2017, 4 patients (2 adrenal neuroblastomas, 1 renal cell carcinoma, 1 infantile fibrosarcoma) underwent elective en-bloc resection of tumor and of the infrahepatic portion of the inferior vena cava (IVC), with planned IVC prosthetic replacement. In three cases a portion of the left renal vein had to be resected as well, with the vein reanastomosed onto the prosthesis, and a concomitant auto-transplantation of the right kidney was associated in one neuroblastoma patient.
All patients had an uncomplicated postoperative course. In one patient, the prosthetic conduit is patent at long-term (43 months), while the middle portion of the prosthesis did eventually thrombose at mid-term after surgery in the three others – with no related symptoms. Interestingly, all renal venous reconstructions remain patent. Three patients (2 neuroblastomas and 1 infantile fibrosarcoma) are alive and disease-free at 43, 74 and 108 months after surgery, respectively. One patient with renal cell carcinoma died of recurrence of the disease 21 months after surgery.
Resection and reconstruction of the vena cava, including the renal vein portion, can be considered and planned electively in case of tumoral encasement. This strategy is associated with good tolerance of the operation, low morbidity and satisfactory long-term function, even in cases with progressive and/or secondary partial thrombosis.

We searched for an optical counterpart to the first gravitational-wave source discovered by LIGO (GW150914), using a combination of the Pan-STARRS1 wide-field telescope and the Public ESO ...Spectroscopic Survey of Transient Objects (PESSTO) spectroscopic follow-up programme. As the final LIGO sky maps changed during analysis, the total probability of the source being spatially coincident with our fields was finally only 4.2 per cent. Therefore, we discuss our results primarily as a demonstration of the survey capability of Pan-STARRS and spectroscopic capability of PESSTO. We mapped out 442 deg2 of the northern sky region of the initial map. We discovered 56 astrophysical transients over a period of 41 d from the discovery of the source. Of these, 19 were spectroscopically classified and a further 13 have host galaxy redshifts. All transients appear to be fairly normal supernovae (SNe) and AGN variability and none is obviously linked with GW150914. We illustrate the sensitivity of our survey by defining parametrized light curves with time-scales of 4, 20 and 40 d and use the sensitivity of the Pan-STARRS1 images to set limits on the luminosities of possible sources. P1 = 19.2, 20.0 and 20.8, respectively, for the three time-scales. For long time-scale parametrized light curves (with full width half-maximum ≃40 d), we set upper limits of

Laparoscopic appendectomy followed by postoperative intravenous (IV) antibiotics is the standard of care for acute appendicitis and postoperative prevention of intra-abdominal abscesses. The aim of ...or study was to determine if intraperitoneal irrigation with antibiotics could help prevent intra-abdominal abscess formation after laparoscopic appendectomy for complicated appendicitis in pediatric patients.
A retrospective study was conducted on consecutive pediatric patients with acute appendicitis who had appendectomy in our Pediatric Surgery Department between August 2020 and February 2022. We compared two groups with similar age and symptoms. The first group (A) was treated with the normal standard of care, i.e., laparoscopic appendectomy and postoperative IV antibiotic therapy. For the second group (B) intraperitoneal cefazoline irrigation was added at the end of the laparoscopic procedure. Postoperative intra-abdominal abscess was diagnosed with ultrasound examination, performed after clinical suspicion/abnormal blood test results.
One hundred sixty patients (males:females 109:51; median age 10.5 years range 3-17 years) who had laparosopic appendectomy for complicated appendicitis were included, 82 in group A and 78 in group B. In the first 7 days after surgery, 18 patients in group and 5 in group B developed an intra-abdominal abscess (p < 0.005). Drains were positioned in 38 patients in group A vs. 9 in group B. One patient in group A had a different complication which was infection of the surgical incision.
Intraperitoneal cefazoline irrigation at the end of the laparoscopic appendectomy in pediatric patients significantly reduces the formation of intra-abdominal abscesses.
We present the spectroscopic and photometric study of five intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs), namely AT 2010dn, AT 2012jc, AT 2013la, AT 2013lb, and AT 2018aes. They share common ...observational properties and belong to a family of objects similar to the prototypical ILRT SN 2008S. MIR images, suggests an intermediate-mass precursor star embedded in a dusty cocoon. We propose the explosion of a super-asymptotic giant branch star forming an electron-capture supernova as a plausible explanation for these events.

Abstract
We present high-cadence optical, ultraviolet (UV), and near-infrared data of the nearby (
D
≈ 23 Mpc) Type II supernova (SN) 2021yja. Many Type II SNe show signs of interaction with ...circumstellar material (CSM) during the first few days after explosion, implying that their red supergiant (RSG) progenitors experience episodic or eruptive mass loss. However, because it is difficult to discover SNe early, the diversity of CSM configurations in RSGs has not been fully mapped. SN 2021yja, first detected within ≈ 5.4 hours of explosion, shows some signatures of CSM interaction (high UV luminosity and radio and x-ray emission) but without the narrow emission lines or early light-curve peak that can accompany CSM. Here we analyze the densely sampled early light curve and spectral series of this nearby SN to infer the properties of its progenitor and CSM. We find that the most likely progenitor was an RSG with an extended envelope, encompassed by low-density CSM. We also present archival Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the host galaxy of SN 2021yja, which allows us to place a stringent upper limit of ≲ 9
M
☉
on the progenitor mass. However, this is in tension with some aspects of the SN evolution, which point to a more massive progenitor. Our analysis highlights the need to consider progenitor structure when making inferences about CSM properties, and that a comprehensive view of CSM tracers should be made to give a fuller view of the last years of RSG evolution.

: The child successfully responded to therapy with normalization of the Carbohydrate Antigen (CA) 19.9 value after the third cycle of treatment. After the sixth cycle, he underwent surgery that consisted in sigmoid resection with complete D3 lymphadenectomy. At histological evaluation, no residual neoplastic cells were detectable in the surgical specimen. He completed 12 cycles of chemotherapy plus panitumomab and he is alive without disease 14 months from diagnosis.
: Our results suggest performing mutational screening for colorectal cancer also in the pediatric setting, in order to orient treatment that should include targeted therapies.

The multifactorial nature of Late Onset Alzheimer's Disease (LOAD), the AD form of major relevance on epidemiological and social aspects, has driven the original investigation by LC-MS and top-down ...proteomics approach of the protein repertoire of the brain tissue of TgCRND8 model mice fed with a diet deficient in B vitamins. The analysis of the acid-soluble fraction of brain tissue homogenates identified a list of proteins and peptides, proteoforms and PTMs. In order to disclose possible modulations, their relative quantification in wild type and AD model mice under both B vitamin deficient and control diets was performed. The levels of metallothionein III, guanine nucleotide-binding protein G(I)/G(S)/G(O) subunit gamma-2 and brain acid soluble protein 1 showed statistically significant alterations depending on genotype, diet or both effects, respectively. Particularly, metallothionein III exhibited increased levels in TgCRND8 mice under B vitamin deficient diet with respect to wild type mice under both diets. Brain acid soluble protein 1 showed the opposite, revealing decreased levels in all diet groups of AD model mice with respect to wild type mice in control diet. Lower levels of brain acid soluble protein 1 were also observed in wild type mice under deficiency of B vitamins. These results, besides contributing to increase the knowledge of AD at molecular level, give new suggestions for deeply investigating metallothionein III and brain acid soluble protein 1 in AD.
