This article investigates students' perceptions towards English(es), English(es) they desire, and (in)justice in English language teaching (ELT) practices in Indonesian multilingual contexts. Data ...from semi-structured interviews with five students majoring Arabic Language and Literature at an Islamic university in East Java, Indonesia, were analysed using native speakerism and linguistic imperialism frameworks. The university requires all students to enrol in English for Specific Purposes and Intensive English courses that are worth six credits and to obtain a particular TOEFL score before undergraduate thesis examination. The findings demonstrate that native English maintains its superiority, gains positive association, and is desired to offer chances for international participation such as working in international/multinational companies or studying overseas. Students' teaching/learning activities are dictated under a native English regime. However, limited understanding and lack of awareness of World Englishes or English as lingua franca concepts have contributed to the construction of such ELT as fair practice.

Problems with the Meaning of the Al-Quran in Conventional Interpretation MethodsThis article explores the deviations in meaning in the interpretation of the Qur'an resulting from the use of ...conventional methods of interpretation, and what causes these deviations. This study is a literature review using descriptive-analytical method. The findings indicate that the interpretation resulting from the use of conventional interpretation methods has causes that make the results of the interpretation of the Koran deviate. There are two categories of causes, namely; underlying causes and specific causes. The basic cause of the deviation occurs because the requirements and standards for interpretation are not fulfilled optimally and consistently. The causes specifically for these deviations are related to the factors of interpretation deviation in the al-ma'tsur, al-ra'yu and al-isyari approaches. Knowledge of the causes of deviations in the meaning of the Qur'an can be a separate part of conventional interpretation methods
The Popular Hadith Concerning Knowledge and its Relevance to the Problems of Islamic EducationComprehensive studies on hadiths in terms of sanad, matan, and sharah should be done in order to get a ...good understanding. This article aims to explain comprehensively a popular hadith as regards the command to study. The takhrij method is used to find the qualities of sanad and matan. Furthermore, it gives sharah on the hadiths especially in the term "ilmu" (knowledge) from the hadith scholars. This article finds that there are variations in explaining the quality of sanad and matan of that hadith. However, in general, the quality of sanad is declared dha'if, and the substance of the matan is declared sahih. Hadith scholars have no problem regarding the law of the dha'if hadith for fadah'il al-'a'mal. Then, the meanings of the word “ilmu” uttered by the scholars are also diverse and have an open character. The diversity of meanings is influenced by the scholars’ different backgrounds. This shows that the meanings of “ilmu” can still develop according to the context of the era. With sharah as such, it can further contribute to addressing the problems of Islamic education in the development of science. Islamic education should act openly and inclusively to carry out scientific studies. Also, it is no longer essential to dichotomize or narrow the meanings of “ilmu”

KH. Sahal Mahfudz represents Indonesia’s traditional ulama (salaf) with an open mind to change. His existence is crucial because he has held various highest positions in several leading Indonesian ...religious institutions, such as Chairman (Rais Aam) of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) for three periods and as Chairman of the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) for 15 years. This article highlights his thoughts on integrating Islamic education with socio-cultural and scientific contexts. By examining his works, this article concludes that Islamic education, according to KH. Sahal Mahfudz has an integrative function with four main criteria. First, it has an integrated fundamental role. Second, it is not closed, not isolated from the socio-cultural context and has an accommodative attitude, and is open to revitalization. Third, it supports an interdisciplinary-multidisciplinary way of thinking. Fourth, it has an innovative character by bringing together tradition and modernity. From these findings, this article mentions these ideas as open Islamic education of KH. Sahal Mahfudz.

In verbal interaction and communication, speakers often employ communicative signals; verbal or non-verbal, special words or phrases, which can be regarded as pragmatic markers (Fraser, 1996; Foolen ...2011). This paper aims to investigate the Madurese pragmatic particle jâ’: its position in the sentence and in sequences of interaction, and how it functions in conversation. To achieve the objectives of the present study, conversation analysis was employed to describe the particle’s position in interaction and to account for its pragmatic functions. The data of the present study were taken from recorded conversations among Madurese speakers. This study showed that the particle jâ’ predominantly occurred in turn-initial positions. In addition, the particle jâ’ also appeared in sentence-initial and sentence-middle positions but not in sentence-final positions. In terms of function, the particle jâ’ could function as topic shifts, prohibitive markers, and emphatic markers.
The desire to improve institutional profile and students’ linguistic skills leads to the growth of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI). While studies regarding EMI have been sufficiently ...documented, little is known about Arabic as a Medium of Instruction (AMI) in the expanding circles. To fill in the gap, our study examines EMI and AMI at IIU University (Indonesian Islamic University) using semi-structured interviews with six alumni of the program. Data were analyzed through Phan’s (2017) conceptualization of adjusted desire and transformative mediocrity. The findings demonstrate that EMI and AMI are strategically employed to symbolically legitimize the “international” profile. In practice, both EMI and AMI likely result in below-mediocre quality education. However, the participants still hold the (limited) power of transformation, as they view their recent teaching position and recognition as having been impacted by their below-mediocre EMI and EMI programs.
