Database study of 1483 primary macular hole operations. Eligible operations were ...primary MH operations treated with a vitrectomy and a gas or air tamponade. Excluded were eyes with a history of retinal detachment, high myopia, previous vitrectomy or trauma.
A higher proportion of operations were performed in eyes from females (71.1%) who were 'on average' younger (p < 0.001), with slightly larger holes (p < 0.001) than male patients. Sulfur hexafluoride gas was generally used for smaller holes (p < 0.001). From 1253 operations with a known surgical outcome, successful hole closure was achieved in 1199 (96%) and influenced by smaller holes and complete ILM peeling (p < 0.001), but not post-surgery positioning (p = 0.072). A minimum linear diameter of ~500 μm marked the threshold where the success rate started to decline. From the 1056 successfully closed operations eligible for visual outcome analysis, visual success (defined as visual acuity of 0.30 or better logMAR) was achieved in 488 (46.2%) eyes. At the multivariate level, the factors predicting visual success were better pre-operative VA, smaller hole size, shorter duration of symptoms and the absence of AMD.
Females undergoing primary macular hole surgery tend to be younger and have larger holes than male patients. The definition of a large hole should be changed to around 500 μm, and patients should be operated on early to help achieve a good post-operative VA.

Purpose. To solve the problem of the allocation of contact vertical normal tensions along the sole of a rigid round stamp, located in an elastic isotropic half-space at a certain depth h 0. To ...compare the obtained solution with the well-known classical result for h = 0, to check the obtained results for adequacy. Methodology. Based on the analysis of the decision on the stress-strain state of the base, inside which there is a vertical arbitrary load distributed over the area of the circle, the necessary formulas are obtained to solve the problem. An algorithm for constructing an approximate solution has been developed, the essence of which is to use a combination of the boundary element method and the iteration process by S.N.Klepikov. For a number of depths, approximate solutions of the considered problem are obtained. Findings. The proposed algorithm for the approximate solution of the problem of indenting a round rigid stamp into the upper boundary of an elastic isotropic half-space has good agreement with the exact solution and can be used to solve contact problems. The outlines of the contact stress diagrams depend on the depth at which they are determined – the greater the depth, the flatter the outlines of the diagrams are, while starting from a certain depth, the diagrams of contact stresses practically coincide. The greater the depth is at which the stamp is located, the more force must be applied to obtain equal displacements of the stamp. Originality. The obtained research results significantly expand the possibilities of solving various problems of soil mechanics and foundation engineering, make it possible to obtain absolutely new results. In particular, a clear dependence of the contact stresses along the sole of a rigid round stamp on the depth at which it is located was identified. In addition, the presented data allow us to designate an absolutely new direction in the calculation of the foundations of ground anchors, namely, the calculation of their deformations. Practical value. For engineering practice, it is important that the greater the value of Poisson’s ratio of the base is, the greater the contact stresses are, other things being equal.
Zinc oxide nanoparticles were for the first time produced by laser ablation of a solid zinc target in 35% liquid hydrogen peroxide. As-produced nanoparticle-based films on Si substrates were ...visualized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersion x-ray micro-spectroscopy (EDX) as amorphous, containing highly defective mixed oxide/hydroxide structures and crystallization-water molecules. Specific structural defects, damping the photoluminescence band of the nanoparticles peaked near 550 nm for the 488 nm pump laser wavelength, were annealed in air at temperatures 200-400 °C over 1-2 hours, with the accompanying strong photoluminescence yield and the appearance of the absorption cut-off near 350 nm. However, the following annealing at higher temperatures up to 1200 °C for time periods variable in the range of 1-3 hours, resulted in the damping of the photoluminescence. According to x-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization of the nanoparticle-based films on fluorite substrates, high-temperature annealing at 800 C for 1 hour induce crystallization of the common hexagonal ZnO phase (wurzite structure) via loss of peroxide bridges, crystallization water molecules and other structural defects. Meanwhile, annealing at 1200 °C yields in another distinct crystalline phase of ZnO, which appears to be a sphalerite.
Purpose. The main purpose of the work is to construct accurate analytical dependences of the sedimentation of the roadbed base on its coordinates and the trapezoidal external load applied to the ...upper limit of the base. This will allow the foundation settlement profile to be calculated within and outside the embankment using the layer-by-layer stacking method. Methodology. Theoretical studies of geomechanical processes using analytical and numerical mathematical methods were applied to achieve the purpose, as well as analysis and generalization of the results of theoretical research. Findings. Analytical dependences of vertical and horizontal normal deformations on the half-plane coordinates to the upper limit of which the trapezoidal load is applied were obtained within the framework of the base model in the form of a linear elastic isotropic medium and the calculated scheme of planar deformation. On this basis, an algorithm for constructing a profile of a roadbed sedimentation made of soil materials has been developed. Originality. Analytical dependences of vertical normal deformations in the roadbed base with a trapezoidal profile on its coordinates are obtained. Practical value. The research materials presented in this work make it possible to construct the design profile of the roadbed of soil materials, taking into account the strong compressibility of the soil. In addition, the results obtained can be used to determine the lower limit of the compressible strata of the bases, to the upper limit of which a distributed load of either a triangular or a trapezoidal form is applied.

Основною метою цієї роботи є побудова точних аналітичних залежностей осідання основи дорожнього полотна від його координат і прикладеного до верхньої межі основи трапецієподібного зовнішнього навантаження. Це дозволить розрахувати профіль осідання основи в межах і за межами насипу з використанням методу пошарового підсумовування. Методика. Для досягнення мети використано теоретичні дослідження геомеханічних процесів із використанням аналітичних і чисельних математичних методів. Аналіз і узагальнення результатів теоретичних досліджень. Результати. У рамках моделі основи у вигляді лінійного пружного ізотропного середовища й розрахункової схеми плоскої деформації отримано аналітичні залежності вертикальних і горизонтальних нормальних деформацій від координат півплощини, до верхньої межі якої прикладене навантаження у вигляді трапеції. На цій базі розроблено алгоритм побудови профілю осідання дорожнього полотна, складеного з ґрунтових матеріалів. Наукова новизна. Отримано аналітичні залежності вертикальних нормальних деформацій в основі дорожнього полотна з трапецеїдальним профілем від його координат. Практична значимість. Викладені в цій роботі результати досліджень дозволяють побудувати проєктний профіль дорожнього полотна з ґрунтових матеріалів з урахуванням сильної стискальної деформації ґрунту. Крім того, отримані результати можуть бути використані для визначення нижньої межі товщі основ, що стискаються, до верхньої межі яких прикладене розподілене навантаження трикутної або трапецієподібної форми.
Purpose. There are many problems in the design of anti-landslide constructions, therefore discrete constructions are an alternative to solid anti-landslides. Despite the advantages of such ...constructions, difficulties also arise when using them. In this work, it is envisaged to develop methods for determining the zone of influence of discrete restraining constructions on the interaction of a sliding soil mass with them and a method for assessing the conditions of a stable state of the soil, which interacts with discrete restraining constructions, by constructing analytical dependencies necessary to determine the zone size and the soil stability coefficient. Methodology. Theoretical studies of geomechanical processes using analytical and numerical mathematical methods, as well as analysis and generalization of theoretical research results were used to achieve the purpose. Findings. The research results presented in the work allow, during the design of landslide discrete constructions, to determine the area of interaction of the shear with discrete retaining constructions, as well as to take into account the stability coefficient of the soil laid between the elements of the discrete retaining structure. Dependences were obtained for determining the zone size in which the sliding soil mass interacts, with discrete retaining constructions, and the soil stability coefficient in the zone of its interaction with these constructions. Originality. Analytical dependencies allow to calculate the boom of lifting the soil dumping arch between the elements of the discrete anti-landslide restraining construction and the coefficient of soil stability. Practical value. The research results allow, when designing discrete restraining constructions, to determine the area of interaction of the shear with these constructions and the stability coefficient of the soil laid between the elements of the discrete restraining construction.
Мета. Під час проєктування протизсувних конструкцій виникає багато проблем, тому дискретні конструкції є альтернативою твердим протизсувним конструкціям. У цій роботі передбачено розробити методику визначення зони впливу дискретних утримувальних споруд на взаємодію з ними ґрунтового масиву, що сповзає, та методику, що дозволяє оцінити умови стійкого стану ґрунту, який взаємодіє з дискретними утримувальними конструкціями, шляхом побудови аналітичних залежностей, необхідних для визначення розмірів зони, та коефіцієнта стійкості ґрунту. Методика. Для досягнення мети використано теоретичні дослідження геомеханічних процесів із застосуванням аналітичних і чисельних математичних методів, а також аналіз та узагальнення результатів теоретичних досліджень. Результати. Наведені в роботі результати досліджень дозволяють під час проєктування зсувних дискретних споруд визначити область взаємодії зсуву з дискретними утримувальними спорудами, а також врахувати коефіцієнт стійкості укладеного між елементами дискретної утримувальної конструкції ґрунту. Отримано залежності для визначення розмірів зони, у якій відбувається взаємодія ґрунтового масиву, що сповзає, з дискретними утримувальними конструкціями, і коефіцієнта стійкості ґрунту в зоні його взаємодії з цими спорудами. Наукова новизна. Аналітичні залежності дозволяють розрахунковим шляхом визначити стрілу підйому арки відвалу ґрунту між елементами дискретної протизсувної утримувальної конструкції та коефіцієнт стійкості ґрунту. Практична значимість. Результати досліджень дозволяють під час проєктування утримувальних дискретних споруд визначити область їх взаємодії із зсувом та коефіцієнт стійкості ґрунту, укладеного між їх елементами.
Brucella melitensis is a facultative intracellular bacterial pathogen that causes abortion in goats and sheep and Malta fever in humans. The genome of B. melitensis strain 16M was sequenced and found ...to contain 3,294,935 bp distributed over two circular chromosomes of 2,117,144 bp and 1,177,787 bp encoding 3,197 ORFs. By using the bioinformatics suite Ergo, 2,487 (78%) ORFs were assigned functions. The origins of replication of the two chromosomes are similar to those of other α-proteobacteria. Housekeeping genes, including those involved in DNA replication, transcription, translation, core metabolism, and cell wall biosynthesis, are distributed on both chromosomes. Type I, II, and III secretion systems are absent, but genes encoding sec-dependent, sec-independent, and flagella-specific type III, type IV, and type V secretion systems as well as adhesins, invasins, and hemolysins were identified. Several features of the B. melitensis genome are similar to those of the symbiotic Sinorhizobium meliloti.

Purpose. Prospectivity assessments of the nanomaterials usage in construction technologies at the same time meeting the requirements of environmental safety and rational use of the natural resources. ...Methodology. During the study the building composites, in particular concretes, which are obtained on the base of the raw materials, which are introduced in the array of micro- and nanolevels were researched and analyzed. The deformation and deterioration processes of nanostructured concrete depending on their composition and manufacture parameters were simulated. Findings. Concrete manufacture is in the direct dependence on its components. Due to the extraction and processing of these components land degradation occurs because of soil destruction with oversize pits, which threatens the ecology of the environment. In this connection there is a need for another concept of building materials receiving for concrete manufacture. The new branch of science based on nanotechnologies, nanomaterials and nanostructuring is a key to its foundation. The special features of nanostructured concretes are the nanoagents in their composition (carbon nano-tubes, mechanoactivated slags of blast furnace production). The study of deformation patterns and concrete deterioration based on the mechanoactivated material will purposefully affect the structure, physical and chemical properties, as well as the mechanical and deformational ones. Originality. The researches have shown that nanostructured concrete had high fluidity. The strength of such compositions is enhanced up to 13 % without reduction of concrete consumption and up to 8.8% at 10% reduced concrete consumption. Practical value. The application of the structured concretes based on the mechanoactivated material will increase the efficiency of the industrial wastes recycling and improve the physical, mechanical and technological properties of the produced composites. From the standpoint of the economic benefits, the application of the nano-structured concrete is profitable, as it develops high strength along with the decrease in the weight and volume of the constructions. The use of new technologies will improve the environmental performance of building materials and reduce the harmful effects on the environment during their production.
Мета. Метою проведенного дослідження була оцінка перспективи використання наноматеріалів у будівельних технологіях при одночасному дотриманні вимог по збереженню екологічної безпеки та раціональному використанні природних ресурсів. Методика. У ході проведення досліджень було вивчено та проаналізовано будівельні композити, зокрема бетони, що отримують на основі сировини, які навантажуються на масштабних мікро- і нанорівнях; промодельовані процеси деформування і руйнування наноструктурованих бетонів, в залежності від їх складу і технологічних параметрів отримання. Результати. Виробництво бетону безпосередньо залежить від компонентів, що входять до його складу. При видобуванні цих компонентів відбувається деградація земель через знищення грунту великими кар’єрами, що несе загрозу екології. У зв’язку з цим виникає необхідність у створенні іншої концепції отримання будівельного бетону. В її основу повинна бути покладена нова галузь науки, яка базується на поняттях нанотехнологій, наноматеріалів та наноструктурування. Особливістю наноструктурованих бетонів є введення до їх складу нанодобавок (вуглецеві нанотрубки, механоактивовані доменні шлаки). Вивчення закономірностей деформування і руйнування бетону на основі механоактивованої сировини дозволить направлено впливати на структуру, фізико-хімічні, механічні та деформаційні властивості. Наукова новизна. Проведені дослідження показали, що наноструктуровані бетонні суміші мають велику рухомість. Міцність таких композитів підвищується на 13 % – без скорочення витрат цементу і на 8,8 % – при скороченні витрат цементу на 10 %. Практична значимість. Застосування струк-турованих бетонів на основі механоактивованої сировини дозволить підвищити ефективність переробки промислових відходів, поліпшити фізико-механічні та технологічні властивості одержуваних композитів. З точки зору економічної доцільності застосування наноструктурованого бетону є вигідним, так як він набирає високу міцність, при цьому вага та об’єм конструкції зменшується. Використання нових технологій дозволить покращити екологічні показники будівельних матеріалів та зменшити шкідливий вплив на атмосферу у процесі їх виготовлення.
