This article explores transfers of ideas and environmental practices that developed or circulated in late socialist Yugoslavia in the 1970s and 1980s. Case studies of alternative models for ...environmental initiatives in architectural and urban practices are explored to contest a historical narrative of environmental activism that claims it is underpinned by Western democratic political conditions. The research is based on a comparative analysis of documents and period sources about the activities, which ranged from self-organized exhibitions to architecture and urban-design competitions. Thus, the article examines how these strategies of environmental mobilization contributed to shifts in the highly formalized politics of urban planning prevalent at that time. This article therefore examines political and cultural factors, as well as the dynamics underpinning dialogues, critiques, and collaborative practices as part of a general movement to humanize the transition as a condition of the late-socialist society. This article challenges conventional models of interpreting relations between local and global architectural culture by bringing its multilayered transfers under the spotlight.
The article examines the role of photography in architectural magazines during the 1950s and 1960s, with special focus on the transfers of architectural ideas. By applying an interdisciplinary method ...that includes a contextual model of visual studies, art, architecture and design history, the article analyzes selected examples to gain insight into the theoretical and cultural-historical foundations and circumstances of the creation and transformation of the visual language of photography in architectural magazines published in the specified period. Instead of (re)constructing the narrative, the roles of photography in the representation of architectural production are studied as a field of complex relations in the field of cultural production. Special attention is paid to specific ways of establishing visual codes of communicating architectural ideas based on photography, created during the 1950s and 1960s in different political and cultural contexts. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the interpretation of architectural photography, from documenting to socially and politically engaged criticism, as well as relativizing the boundaries between architecture and popular culture in the sphere of visual, aesthetic, spatial and ideological aspects of the representational discourse of architectural magazines.
Setting forth from the thesis that Gamulin’s role in shaping key phenomena has been unjustifiably categorized by the political nature of his views and therefore mostly given a negative connotation, ...this paper critically redefines his contribution to the discipline of art criticism of the first half of the 1950s. The intention is to shed light on the insufficiently known segments of Grgo Gamulin’s contribution to the formative processes of affirming criticism in the internationalization of the local art scene in that period based on the research into documentation from the Archives of the International Association of Art Critics AICA (Rennes). By analysing these data in the context of socialist Yugoslavia’s promotion and networking on the global stage, the purpose is to argue their positions within the context of then current cultural policy and initiate debate on the results redefined in this manner. By doing so, the different positions of genre media and the thematic and ideological settings that dictated his work in the field of art criticism as a symptom of the period in question are examined and critically analysed.

The topic of this paper is the “Architecture and Freedom” exhibition staged in 1969 at Künstlerhaus Graz as a key example of architectural representation. It was a radical venture into the field of ...conceptualising architecture, analogous to the contemporary curatorial experiments of Harald Szeemann, who relativised the boundaries between architecture, visual media and critique, counterculture, mass media, and conceptual art. Twenty-seven projects by Superstudio, Coop Himmel(b)lau, Hans Hollein, and other protagonists of radical architecture were submitted in response to an open call to design a hypothetical city in the year 2000, illustrating that exhibiting architecture had indeed become a discipline that accommodated a plurality of platforms, strategies, contexts, and actors. Thus, visitors were invited to record their impressions in a computer system, which projected those recordings into the exhibition space. Using the methodological apparatus of architectural history, critical theory, and cultural studies, the article explores the politics of representation and interpretation of architectural space within the framework of experimental curatorial practices. The aim is to contextualise the exhibition within the framework of radical and experimental curatorial practices and to reinterpret the specific ways in which architectural representation narrated specific cultural values.
