Based on the combination of gas engine cogeneration of heat and power (GECHP) technology and temperature and humidity independent control air-conditioning technology, an air-conditioning system ...combined with desiccant wheel driven by GECHP was proposed to decrease cooling energy consumption and utilize the waste heat of gas engine. In this study, Dymola software was adopted to model the hybrid system and conduct hourly simulation throughout the cooling and heating season for two types of large public buildings: the supermarket building and the office building. Results show that the hybrid system applied to target buildings can meet the requirements of each index of air-conditioning energy supply. Comparing two types of application scenarios, the system primary energy conversion ratio of the supermarket building reaches 112%, 19% higher than that of the office building. And the system CO2 emission reduction rate per unit of capacity of the supermarket building is 0.18 kg/kWh, lower than the 0.22 kg/kWh of the office building. Therefore, the hybrid system has superior energy-saving and environmental performance and is especially suitable for high-temperature and high-humidity areas in summer as well as building application scenarios with high indoor moisture gain and fresh air demand.
•Dynamic simulation for desiccant wheel air-conditioning systems applied in different types of large public buildings.•Desiccant wheels can significantly reduce air-conditioning cooling demand by converting latent load to regenerative heat demand.•Desiccant wheel air-conditioning system driven by gas engine cogeneration of heat and power (GEDWS) has superior energy-saving and environmental performance.•GEDWS is especially suitable for high-temperature and high-humidity areas as well as building application scenarios with high indoor moisture gain and fresh air demand.•System performance will be further improved for buildings with sanitary hot water demand.

Based on the theory of rack-gear common-tangential conjugate generating, the constructing of ease-off surface has been done by means of the topology modification of polynomial surface. By analyzing ...topological structure characteristics of ease-off surface, the meshing characteristics such as the contact area, the contact line, and transmission error are determined. By using the geometric analysis of ease-off surface and the potential energy method, the calculation methods of gear tooth stiffness and loaded transmission error are given, and a series of results for the tooth meshing stiffness, loaded transmission error, and load distribution map under varied loads are obtained. In order to solve the stress problem of tooth surface edge contact, the calculation method of quasi-Hertz contact is proposed by subdividing finite contact elements. Taking the second-order parabolic topological modification as an example, the time-varying history characteristics of tooth surface meshing are analyzed. The simulation results of the maximum contact stress and contact area are in good agreement with those calculated by MASTA software. Based on the integration of the geometric analysis of ease-off surface, the tooth stiffness calculation of potential energy method and the quasi-Hertz contact, it provides a convenient method for loaded tooth contact analysis.
Fibroblast growth factor 5 (FGF5) regulates hair length in humans and a variety of other animals. To investigate whether FGF5 has similar effects in sheep, we used clustered regularly interspaced ...short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR‐associated 9 (Cas9) to generate loss‐of‐function mutations with the FGF5 gene in Chinese Merino sheep. A total of 16 lambs were identified with genetic mutations within the targeting locus: 13 lambs had biallelic modifications and three lambs had monoallelic modifications. Characterization of the modifications revealed that 13 were frameshift mutations that led to premature termination, whereas the other three were in‐frame deletions. Thus, CRISPR/Cas9 efficiently generated loss‐of‐function mutations in the sheep FGF5 gene. We then investigated the effect of loss of FGF5 function on wool traits in 12 lambs and found that wool staple length and stretched length of genetically modified (GM) yearling sheep were significantly longer compared with that of wild‐type (WT) control animals. The greasy fleece weight of GM yearling sheep was also significantly greater compared with that of WT sheep. Moreover, the mean fiber diameter in GM sheep showed no significant difference compared with WT sheep, suggesting that the increase in greasy fleece weight was likely attributed to the increase in wool length. The results of this study suggest that CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated loss of FGF5 activity could promote wool growth and, consequently, increase wool length and yield.

Despite the substantial role that chickens have played in human societies across the world, both the geographic and temporal origins of their domestication remain controversial. To address this ...issue, we analyzed 863 genomes from a worldwide sampling of chickens and representatives of all four species of wild jungle fowl and each of the five subspecies of red jungle fowl (RJF). Our study suggests that domestic chickens were initially derived from the RJF subspecies Gallus gallus spadiceus whose present-day distribution is predominantly in southwestern China, northern Thailand and Myanmar. Following their domestication, chickens were translocated across Southeast and South Asia where they interbred locally with both RJF subspecies and other jungle fowl species. In addition, our results show that the White Leghorn chicken breed possesses a mosaic of divergent ancestries inherited from other subspecies of RJF. Despite the strong episodic gene flow from geographically divergent lineages of jungle fowls, our analyses show that domestic chickens undergo genetic adaptations that underlie their unique behavioral, morphological and reproductive traits. Our study provides novel insights into the evolutionary history of domestic chickens and a valuable resource to facilitate ongoing genetic and functional investigations of the world's most numerous domestic animal.

The aim of this study is to develop a new micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography with field amplified sample stacking for the determination of five kinds of macrolide antibiotic residues in ...milk. The main factors that affect the separation and enrichment of these analytes were optimized. The optimum running buffer was composed of 60 mM phosphate, 5 mM sodium cholate, and 1.0 mM cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide at pH 7.0. The separation voltage was 20 kV and the sample was electrokinetically injected at 10 kV for 120 s. The detection wavelength was set at 195 nm. Under the optimized conditions, the enrichment factor of tilmicosin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin, and tylosin were 866, 565, 908, 702, and 675, respectively. The limits of detection ranged from 0.002 to 0.004 mg/kg. The method shall meet the requirement of their maximum residue limits ruled by China, the European Union, the United States, and other countries.
Practical applications
The developed method has been applied successfully to the determination of the milk samples spiked at 0.05 and 0.1 mg/kg. The recoveries ranging from 72.8 to 93.7% demonstrate that the method can be applied to the detection of tilmicosin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin, and tylosin residues in milk.

Scaling up superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) into a large array for imaging applications is the current pursuit. Although various readout architectures have been proposed, ...they cannot resolve multiple-photon detections (MPDs) currently, which limits the operation of the SNSPD arrays at high photon flux. In this study, we focused on the readout ambiguity of a superconducting nanowire single-photon imager applying time-of-flight multiplexing readout. The results showed that image distortion depended on both the incident photon flux and the imaging object. By extracting multiple-photon detections on idle pixels, which were virtual because of the incorrect mapping from the ambiguous readout, a correction method was proposed. An improvement factor of 1.3~9.3 at a photon flux of µ = 5 photon/pulse was obtained, which indicated that joint development of the pixel design and restoration algorithm could compensate for the readout ambiguity and increase the dynamic range.

Penicillium oxalicum has received increasing attention as a potential cellulase-producer. In this study, a copper-controlled flippase recombination enzyme/recognition target (FLP/FRT)-mediated recombination system was constructed in P. oxalicum, to overcome limited availability of antibiotic resistance markers. Using this system, two crucial transcription repressor genes atf1 and cxrC for the production of cellulase and xylanase under solid-state fermentation (SSF) were simultaneously deleted, thereby leading to 2.4- to 29.1-fold higher cellulase and 78.9% to 130.8% higher xylanase production than the parental strain under SSF, respectively. Glucose and xylose released from hydrolysis of pretreated sugarcane bagasse achieved 10.6%–13.5% improvement by using the crude enzymes from the engineered strain Δatf1ΔcxrC::flp under SSF in comparison with that of the parental strain. Consequently, these results provide a feasible strategy for improved cellulase and xylanase production by filamentous fungi.

Abstract
Traditional electrical stimulation of brain tissue typically affects relatively large volumes of tissue spanning multiple millimeters. This low spatial resolution stimulation results in ...nonspecific functional effects. In addition, a primary shortcoming of these designs was the failure to take advantage of inherent functional organization in the cerebral cortex. Here, we describe a new method to electrically stimulate the brain which achieves selective targeting of single feature-specific domains in visual cortex. We provide evidence that this paradigm achieves mesoscale, functional network-specificity, and intensity dependence in a way that mimics visual stimulation. Application of this approach to known feature domains (such as color, orientation, motion, and depth) in visual cortex may lead to important functional improvements in the specificity and sophistication of brain stimulation methods and has implications for visual cortical prosthetic design.
The growing world population and shrinkage of arable land demand yield improvement of rice, one of the most important staple crops. To elucidate the genetic basis of yield and uncover its associated ...loci in rice, we resequenced the core recombinant inbred lines of Liang–You–Pei–Jiu , the widely cultivated super hybrid rice, and constructed a high-resolution linkage map. We detected 43 yield-associated quantitative trait loci, of which 20 are unique. Based on the high-density physical map, the genome sequences of paternal variety 93–11 and maternal cultivar PA64s of Liang–You–Pei–Jiu were significantly improved. The large recombinant inbred line population combined with plentiful high-quality single nucleotide polymorphisms and insertions/deletions between parental genomes allowed us to fine-map two quantitative trait loci, qSN8 and qSPB1 , and to identify days to heading8 and lax panicle1 as candidate genes, respectively. The quantitative trait locus qSN8 was further confirmed to be days to heading8 by a complementation test. Our study provided an ideal platform for molecular breeding by targeting and dissecting yield-associated loci in rice.
