We have measured the ratio I (e + e - a pi + pi - gamma ) / I (e + e - a mu + mu - gamma ) , with the KLOE detector at DAIBBNE for a total integrated luminosity of similar to 240 pb - 1 . From this ...ratio we obtain the cross section I (e + e - a pi + pi -) . From the cross section we determine the pion form factor | F pi | 2 and the two-pion contribution to the muon anomaly a mu for 0.592 < M pi pi < 0.975 GeV , I pi pi a mu = (385.1 +/- 1.1 stat +/- 2.7 sys + theo) X 10 - 10 . This result confirms the current discrepancy between the Standard Model calculation and the experimental measurement of the muon anomaly.

The proton drip-line nucleus 17Ne is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the 17Ne(p,2p)16F→15⁎O+p quasi-free one-proton ...knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500 MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of 16F into 15O (including γ decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the 15O+p relative-energy spectrum and the 16F momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the fractions of l=0 and l=2 motion of the valence protons in 17Ne. With a resulting relatively small l=0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that 17Ne exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the 15O core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections.

Soils contain highly diverse communities of microorganisms and invertebrates. The trophic interactions between these species are largely unknown. Collembolans form an abundant part of the ...invertebrate community in soils. A prevailing view is that soil collembolans are generalist feeders on fungi, lichens, fragmented litter and bacteria. However, in laboratory food choice experiments, it has been shown that collembolans preferentially select certain taxa of fungi. To examine this apparent contradiction, we developed a molecular technique based on the analysis of 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences to explore the diversity of fungi in soils and in the guts of collembolans. We report that the diversity of fungi found in the natural soil was 33 times higher than that in the guts of the collembolan Protaphorura armata. The data support the view that collembolan species can be highly selective when foraging on fungi in soils.
The PROMICE and WASA collaborations are engaged in a common programme in studies of pp and pd reactions at the CELSIUS storage ring at the The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala. Emphasis is placed on ...measurements of neutral meson production in the threshold region. The experimental set-up is presented together with a review of results obtained.

This study is an evaluation, from the patient's point of view, of CAD CAM prosthesis sockets compared with conventional sockets. Twenty-two trans-tibial amputees were divided into two groups. One ...group was provided with a CAD CAM (CAPOD) socket, the other with a conventionally made one. After one month the groups were evaluated with regard to subjective experience, the judgement of a prosthetist and a physiotherapist, social variables and objective gait parameters. Then the groups switched over to the other type of socket, and after another month a new evaluation was performed. The study design was a single-blind study. In total 175 variables were evaluated. No difference was found between the two types of socket, except for a lower number of terry cloth stockings used in the CAD CAM socket. As the standard of conventional prosthetics in Sweden is considered to be high, the results were considered as satisfactory. The quality of the CAD CAM sockets was at least at the same level as conventionally made ones.
Exclusive measurements of the pp-->pppi super(0)pi super(0) reaction have been performed at CELSIUS/WASA at energies from threshold up to T sub()p1.3 GeV. Total and differential cross sections have ...been obtained. Here we concentrate on energies T sub()pinline image1 GeV, where the Delta Delta excitation becomes the leading process. No evidence is found for a significant ABC effect beyond that given by the conventional t-channel Delta Delta excitation. This holds also for the double-pionic fusion to the quasibound super(2)He. The data are compared to model predictions, which are based on both pi- and rho-exchange. Total and differential cross sections are at variance with these predictions and call for a profound modification of the rho-exchange. A phenomenological modification allowing only a small rho-exchange contribution leads to a quantitative description of the data.

Existing mass balance models for phosphorus were tested for fish farm emissions in eight Northern and Central European lakes. These traditional models overestimated the total phosphorus concentration ...in these lakes by, on average, a factor of two. Data from the eight lakes were therefore used to calibrate emission specific models based on the Vollenweider and Dillon–Rigler structures. With this approach, it was possible to improve the accuracy of the models and to eliminate systematic errors. The new models gave

2 values ranging between 0.90 and 0.92. It was not possible to detect any differences in phosphorus–chlorophyll relationships between lakes with or without fish farm emissions. Neither were there any significant differences between measurements in farm lakes and results obtained from phosphorus–chlorophyll models found in the scientific literature. In the future, however, data from more lakes will be needed to further test the new models and to investigate other effect parameters, e.g. phytoplankton biomass and hypolimnetic oxygen concentrations.

We have examined the variations in gene content and sequence divergence that could be associated with symbiotic adaptations in the ectomycorrhizal fungus Paxillus involutus and the closely related ...species Paxillus filamentosus. Strains with various abilities to form mycorrhizae were analysed by comparative genomic hybridizations using a cDNA microarray containing 1076 putative unique genes of P. involutus. To screen for genes diverging at an enhanced and presumably non-neutral rate, we implemented a simple rate test using information from both the variations in hybridizations signal and data on sequence divergence of the arrayed genes relative to the genome of Coprinus cinereus. C. cinereus is a free-living saprophyte and is the closest evolutionary relative to P. involutus that has been fully sequenced. Approximately 17% of the genes investigated were detected as rapidly diverging within Paxillus. Furthermore, 6% of the genes varied in copy numbers between the analysed strains. Genome rearrangements associated with this variation including duplications and deletions may also play a role in adaptive evolution. The cohort of divergent and duplicated genes showed an over-representation of either orphans, genes whose products are located at membranes, or genes encoding for components of stress/defence reactions. Some of the identified genomic changes may be associated with the variation in host specificity of ectomycorrhizal fungi. The proposed procedure could be generally applicable to screen for rapidly evolving genes in closely related strains or species where at least one has been sequenced or characterized by expressed sequence tag analysis.

The ratio R IDT = Phi (IDT a pi + pi - gamma ) / Phi (IDT a pi + pi - pi 0) has been measured by analysing 22 million I a IDT gamma decays collected by the KLOE experiment at DAIBBNE, corresponding ...to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb-1. The IDT a pi + pi - gamma proceeds both via the I resonant contribution, and possibly a non-resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. Our result, R IDT = 0.1856 +/- 0.0005 stat +/- 0.0028 syst , points out a sizable contribution of the direct term to the total width. The di-pion invariant mass for the IDT a pi + pi - gamma decay could be described in a model-independent approach in terms of a single free parameter, alpha . The determined value of the parameter alpha is alpha = (1.32 +/- 0.08 stat - 0.09 syst + 0.10 +/- 0.02 theo) GeV - 2 .
