OBJECTIVE: A community-based prospective longitudinal study was conducted to investigate the association between childhood adversities and problems with eating or weight during adolescence and early ...adulthood. METHOD: A community-based sample of 782 mothers and their offspring were interviewed during the childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood of the offspring. Childhood maltreatment, eating problems, environmental risk factors, temperament, maladaptive parental behavior, and parental psychopathology were assessed during childhood and adolescence. Eating disorders and problems with eating or weight in the offspring were assessed during adolescence and early adulthood. RESULTS: A wide range of childhood adversities were associated with elevated risk for eating disorders and problems with eating or weight during adolescence and early adulthood after the effects of age, childhood eating problems, difficult childhood temperament, parental psychopathology, and co-occurring childhood adversities were controlled statistically. Numerous unique associations were found between specific childhood adversities and specific types of problems with eating or weight, and different patterns of association were obtained among the male and female subjects. Maladaptive paternal behavior was uniquely associated with risk for eating disorders in offspring after the effects of maladaptive maternal behavior, childhood maltreatment, and other co-occurring childhood adversities were controlled statistically. CONCLUSIONS: Childhood adversities may contribute to greater risk for the development of eating disorders and problems with eating and weight that persist into early adulthood. Maladaptive paternal behavior may play a particularly important role in the development of eating disorders in offspring.
Background The quality of medical information on the Internet has come under scrutiny. This study investigates the quality, accuracy, and readability of online information regarding ulnar collateral ...ligament (UCL) injuries. Methods Three search terms (“elbow ulnar collateral ligament injury,” “tommy john injury,” and “pitcher's elbow”) were entered into 3 Internet search engines. Three independent reviewers evaluated the content and accuracy of the information with a set of predetermined scoring criteria. Website quality was further assessed by the Journal of the American Medical Association benchmark criteria and Health on the Net Foundation certification. Website readability was ascertained with the Flesch-Kincaid score. Results We evaluated 113 unique websites. The average quality for all websites was 8.88 ± 6.8 (maximum, 32 points). Website quality and accuracy were lower with use of the search term “pitcher's elbow” as compared with “elbow ulnar collateral ligament injury” or “tommy john injury” ( P ≤ .001). Sites certified by the Health on the Net Foundation had higher quality scores than non-certified sites ( P = .034). The mean reading grade level was 10.7. Reading level was significantly correlated with website accuracy and quality ( P ≤ .001) and physician authorship ( P = .012). Forty-three websites (38.1%) described surgical reconstruction; of these, 16 (37.2%) mentioned improved pitching performance postoperatively. Conclusions Online information on UCL injuries is often inaccurate and written at an inappropriate reading level. Information quality depends on the search term used, website authorship, and commercial bias. Clinicians must be aware of factors influencing website quality in order to direct patients to appropriate resources.

A motor cortex-based brain-computer interface (BCI) creates a novel real world output directly from cortical activity. Use of a BCI has been demonstrated to be a learned skill that involves ...recruitment of neural populations that are directly linked to BCI control as well as those that are not. The nature of interactions between these populations, however, remains largely unknown. Here, we employed a data-driven approach to assess the interaction between both local and remote cortical areas during the use of an electrocorticographic BCI, a method which allows direct sampling of cortical surface potentials. Comparing the area controlling the BCI with remote areas, we evaluated relationships between the amplitude envelopes of band limited powers as well as non-linear phase-phase interactions. We found amplitude-amplitude interactions in the high gamma (HG, 70-150 Hz) range that were primarily located in the posterior portion of the frontal lobe, near the controlling site, and non-linear phase-phase interactions involving multiple frequencies (cross-frequency coupling between 8-11 Hz and 70-90 Hz) taking place over larger cortical distances. Further, strength of the amplitude-amplitude interactions decreased with time, whereas the phase-phase interactions did not. These findings suggest multiple modes of cortical communication taking place during BCI use that are specialized for function and depend on interaction distance.

Purpose: To investigate the validity of the Patient Health Questionnaire for Adolescents (PHQ-A), a self-administered instrument that assesses anxiety, eating, mood, and substance use disorders among ...adolescent primary care patients.
Methods: A total of 403 adolescents from California, New Jersey, New York, and Ohio completed the PHQ-A and the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form General Health Survey (SF-20) during or shortly after a visit to a primary care clinic or a school nurse’s office. A few days later, clinical psychologists who were blind to the results of the PHQ-A administered a semi-structured clinical interview to assess the same psychiatric disorders and to conduct a global assessment of functioning (GAF) among 403 patients. Diagnostic agreement coefficients were computed and analyses of covariance were conducted.
Results: Findings support the diagnostic validity of the PHQ-A. The PHQ-A and the clinical interview produced similar estimates of the prevalence rates of anxiety, eating, mood, and substance use disorders. The PHQ-A demonstrated satisfactory sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic agreement, and overall diagnostic accuracy, compared with the clinical interview. Adolescents with PHQ-A diagnoses experienced significantly poorer mental and overall functioning, more physical pain, and poorer overall health compared with those without psychiatric disorders. These differences remained significant after patients’ age, gender, ethnicity, and site were controlled statistically.
Conclusion: The PHQ-A may be used to assist primary care practitioners in identifying psychiatric disorders among their adolescent patients. The PHQ-A is the first such tool to be tested for use in adolescents and offers an acceptable and efficient tool for early detection and recognition of mental disorders in this high-risk group.

Dark cone photoreceptors, defined as those with diminished or absent reflectivity when observed with adaptive optics (AO) ophthalmoscopy, are increasingly reported in retinal disorders. However, ...their structural and functional impact remain unclear. Here, we report a 3-year longitudinal study on a patient with oligocone trichromacy (OT) who presented with persistent, widespread dark cones within and near the macula. Diminished electroretinogram (ERG) cone but normal ERG rod responses together with normal color vision confirmed the OT diagnosis. In addition, the patient had normal to near normal visual acuity and retinal sensitivity. Occasional dark gaps in the photoreceptor layer were observed on optical coherence tomography, in agreement with reflectance AO scanning light ophthalmoscopy, which revealed that over 50% of the cones in the fovea were dark, increasing to 74% at 10° eccentricity. In addition, the cone density was 78% lower than normal histologic value at the fovea, and 20-40% lower at eccentricities of 5-15°. Interestingly, color vision testing was near normal at locations where cones were predominantly dark. These findings illustrate how a retina with predominant dark cones that persist over at least 3 years can support near normal central retinal function. Furthermore, this study adds to the growing evidence that cones can continue to survive under non-ideal conditions.

•ME-5343 is a new insecticide with high potency to aphids, but limited toxicity to other insects.•ME-5343 caused symptoms that mimic serotonin in crayfish.•ME-5343 was neither an ...agonist nor antagonist of 5-HT2 receptors in crayfish.•ME-5343 has a unique, but not fully understood mechanism of action.
ME-5343 (afidopyropen) is a new and promising insecticide with an unknown mechanism of action that is effective against sucking insects. ME-5343 was highly toxic to pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum), being more toxic than six other widely used insecticides. In contrast, ME-5343 was practically non-toxic to eight other species of insects we tested. ME-5343 was not toxic to German cockroaches (topical application) or American cockroaches (injection), suggesting that lack of toxicity in these species is not due to lack of cuticular penetration. House flies are insensitive to ME-5343 by topical, residual and feeding exposure. Addition of synergists did not change this result, suggesting that insensitivity to ME-5343 in house flies is not due to rapid detoxification nor is it dependent on the method of bioassay used. ME-5343 did not cause firefly lanterns to glow, nor did it prevent the octopamine stimulated lantern glow. Extracellular recordings of action potentials from a tonically active motor nerve of crayfish in situ showed no effects of ME-5343 at concentrations up to 10−5M. These results suggest that the target site of ME-5343 is not the voltage gated sodium channel, voltage gated potassium channel, GABA gated chloride channel, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, acetylcholinesterase, octopamine receptor or glutamate receptor. ME-5343 injected into crayfish caused flextion of the legs and tail, similar to the symptoms induced by 5-HT (serotonin). We evaluated the effect of ME-5343 on 5-HT2-like receptors with intracellular recordings of excitatory post-synaptic potentials from the peripheral neuromuscular junction of the crayfish and found no effect of ME-5343. Thus, ME-5343 was neither an agonist nor antagonist of 5-HT2 receptors, did not affect neurotransmitter release and did not affect glutamate receptors. We conclude that ME-5343 is highly toxic to aphids and that this is due to a unique, and currently undefined mechanism of action.

Objective: To investigate the cumulative prevalence of personality disorder (PD) among adults in the community, based on prospective longitudinal data from a series of psychiatric interviews.
...Method: Psychiatric interviews were administered to a regionally representative community‐based sample of 568 individuals in 1983 (mean age = 14), 1985–1986 (mean age = 16), 1991–1993 (mean age = 22), and 2001–2004 (mean age 33).
Results: The point prevalence of any current DSM‐IV PD, including depressive PD and passive‐aggressive PD, varied between 12.7% and 14.6% across the four diagnostic assessments. The cumulative prevalence of PD increased at each of the follow‐up assessments. At mean age 33, the estimated lifetime prevalence of PD was 28.2%.
Conclusion: The cumulative prevalence of PD, based on a series of interviews conducted during adolescence and adulthood, may be substantially higher than the point prevalence of current PD based on a single assessment interview.

Objectives:
To investigate the associations of beneficial parenting behaviours with adaptive and maladaptive offspring personality traits that persist into adulthood among individuals in the ...community.
Methods:
Families (n = 669) participating in the Children in the Community Study were interviewed during the childhood, adolescence, emerging adulthood, and adulthood of the offspring at the mean ages of 6, 14, 16, 22, and 33 years.
Results:
Twelve types of beneficial maternal and paternal child-rearing behaviour, reported by offspring at the mean age of 16 years, were associated with elevated offspring personality resiliency, at the mean ages of 22 and 33 years, and with low offspring personality disorder trait levels. These longitudinal associations remained significant when histories of childhood behaviour problems and parental psychiatric disorder were controlled statistically. Similar linear (that is, dose-dependent) associations were observed between the number of beneficial parenting behaviours during childhood and adaptive and maladaptive offspring traits at the mean ages of 22 and 33 years. Maternal and paternal behaviours were independently associated with both adaptive and maladaptive offspring traits.
Conclusions:
Beneficial maternal and paternal child-rearing behaviours may promote the development of adaptive offspring personality traits that endure into adulthood, and they may be prospectively associated with reduced levels of maladaptive offspring traits. These associations may not be attributable to childhood behaviour problems or parental psychiatric disorders, and they may be equally evident during early and middle adulthood.
