In conclusion, the available evidence to date suggests that many of the aspects of neuronal functioning affected by gonadal steroids under steady state conditions are also significantly affected by ...steroids under stress conditions such as axon disconnection. This argues toward a therapeutic usefulness of gonadal steroids in activating and/or accelerating the reparative response of neurons to injury, a concept that will be exciting to test in future clinical studies.
With goals of encouraging our best students to become teachers and developing education advocate leadership skills in those students, South Carolina's Teacher Cadet program has been created to ...introduce high school seniors to the field of education through a multifaceted, learner-centered course. This article contains background information about South Carolina's reasons for the creation and continued support of this year-long, dual credit, high school course. A description of the Teacher Cadet curriculum and its partnership with The Citadel is included in the text along with discussion about how the components of the program are intentionally learner-centered. Student and faculty perceptions of the program have also been incorporated. Their perceptions reveal that the Teacher Cadet program is an exemplary, learner-centered, education partnership course. As it says in the Teacher Cadet program introduction: "Learners are no longer viewed as receptacles to be filled with information. They are active participants in the learning process capable of constructing their own knowledge and having legitimate feelings that invite care and respect." (SCCTR, 1998, p. iii)

Professors in the content areas and in teacher preparation are concerned about the effectiveness of the instructional strategies they utilize in their classrooms. This paper is the result of ...collaboration between a college biology professor and a teacher education professor to determine the effectiveness of incorporating learner-centered activities into college level genetics. The article includes discussion about the structure of both an undergraduate and a graduate level course including the types of learner-center strategies that were included. As the courses progressed, the participants in the course were given a survey that included both Likert type questions and open ended questions to determine the effectiveness of including the learner-centered strategies. Analysis of the responses shows that infusing learner-centered strategies into courses has positive benefits for learning content.

Medicaid is a means-tested, federal-state, individual entitlement program, promulgated by the federal government since 1965 as a response to healthcare for the poor. In 1996, a landmark welfare ...reform act entitled the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) was enacted. The enactment of this law, together with budgetary challenges, has created a ripple wave in the human service arena, particularly healthcare. This study investigated the impact of welfare reform on preventive healthcare services in Region II of Baton Rouge Parish, with regard to locations of healthcare facilities, access to healthcare services, payments for medical care, and usages. The 75 participants were 18 years and older; had Medicaid as their healthcare coverage; and used the services at the St. Vincent DePaul's Soup Kitchen or the Bishop Stanley Ott Homeless Shelter. The outcome of this study indicated that the individuals who utilize the preventive healthcare services in Region II of East Baton Rouge Parish of Louisiana were satisfied with the services. This indication allowed the researcher to conclude that the data collected reflected that the participants were not aware of issues addressed in the literature regarding preventive healthcare services in Region II of East Baton Rouge Parish of Louisiana.
The article considers methodological issues which arose in undertaking a twoyear British Library funded research project Assessment Tools for Quality Management in Public Libraries jointly managed by ...the Department of Information Science, Loughborough University and the Department of Information Studies, Sheffield University and discusses the principal findings. The aim of the research was to assess the potential of and then to develop and evaluate selfassessment techniques for the public library and information sector. The authors argue that by using an action research methodology they were best able to produce a selfassessment toolkit which matched the needs of public library services. Using evidence drawn from three case study library authorities and the literature, the authors go on to suggest that whilst selfassessment can have a role to play in the evaluation of library and information services, there is a real need to tailor and adapt tools to reflect specific service cultures and experience.
In this article, some of the trophic actions of gonadal steroids on receptor-concentrating neurons within the mammalian brain and spinal cord will be discussed. This will be followed by a summary of ...our recent data identifying a new role for gonadal steroids as therapeutic agents in neuronal injury and repair.
This dissertation is based on seventeen months of ethnographic fieldwork that followed the development and diffusion of extended-cycle hormonal contraception, or birth control that is designed to ...eliminate monthly bleeding. It encompassed several sites and multiple constituencies: a clinical trial, documented medical conferences, users, potential users, and refusers of the pharmaceuticals, along with key academic and popular proponents of their adoption. Extended-cycle contraception is a critical topic because this new generation of pills, IUDs, shots, and implants is not only refiguring the length of women's cycles, but it is also augmenting the extent to which its users' bodies are medicalized, or subjected to a type of manipulation and regulation that was previously impossible. No longer just for pregnancy prevention, these regimens are increasingly touted as elective enhancement technologies that may improve on the human design, on the one hand, and as crucial preventative medicine for diseases such as reproductive cancers, on the other hand. Remarkably, these pharmaceuticals are as socially complex as they are chemically—they may facilitate the renegotiation of constructions of womanhood, nature, and progress.
