The annual modulation signal observed by the DAMA experiment is a long-standing question in the community of dark matter direct detection. This necessitates an independent verification of its ...existence using the same detection technique. The COSINE-100 experiment has been operating with 106 kg of low-background NaI(Tl) detectors providing interesting checks on the DAMA signal. However, due to higher backgrounds in the NaI(Tl) crystals used in COSINE-100 relative to those used for DAMA, it was difficult to reach final conclusions. Since the start of COSINE-100 data taking in 2016, we also have initiated a program to develop ultra-pure NaI(Tl) crystals for COSINE-200, the next phase of the experiment. The program includes efforts of raw powder purification, ultra-pure NaI(Tl) crystal growth, and detector assembly techniques. After extensive research and development of NaI(Tl) crystal growth, we have successfully grown a few small-size (0.61–0.78 kg) thallium-doped crystals with high radio-purity. A high light yield has been achieved by improvements of our detector assembly technique. Here we report the ultra-pure NaI(Tl) detector developments at the Institute for Basic Science, Korea. The technique developed here will be applied to the production of NaI(Tl) detectors for the COSINE-200 experiment.

The visceral adiposity index (VAI) and lipid accumulation product (LAP) are useful for assessing visceral obesity. However, these indices were developed for Caucasians, and it is necessary to confirm ...whether the VAI and LAP are appropriate indicators for identifying obesity phenotypes in Asians. This study investigated whether the VAI and LAP are effective indicators for diagnosing four obesity phenotypes in South Korean adults.
This cross-sectional study enrolled 23,310 adult participants (age ≥20 years) who had undergone a health checkup at a general hospital in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea from January 2017 to December 2020. VAI and LAP were calculated based on the presented mathematical model according to sex. According to the metabolic health status and presence or absence of obesity, the obesity phenotypes were classified into 4 groups: metabolically healthy non-obese (N=14,240, 61.1%), metabolically unhealthy non-obese (N=477, 2.0%), metabolically healthy obese (MHO; N=6796, 29.2%), and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO; N=1797, 7.7%).
The receiver operating characteristics curve analysis showed VAI best predicted MUO among the four obesity phenotypes, whereas the LAP showed excellent discriminating ability for the MUO group (area under the curve 0.877, 0.849, and 0.921 and 0.923, 0.907, and 0.954 for all participants, men, and women, respectively). The optimal VAI cutoff values for identifying the MUO group were 1.83 in men and 1.58 in women, and the optimal cutoff values for the LAP were 41.45 in men and 23.83 in women, with a higher value for men. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the VAI and LAP were associated with an increased risk in the MHO and MUO groups among the obesity phenotypes in both sexes.
In South Korean adults, the VAI and LAP are closely related to the MUO phenotype in both sexes and are effective indices for predicting the MUO phenotype.
The endogenous H2S-driven theranostic H2S-Gem has been invented. The theranostic prodrug H2S-Gem is selectively activated in cancer cells, releasing active gemcitabine with a simultaneous ...fluorescence turn-on. H2S-Gem selectively inhibited cancer cell growth compared to the mother chemotherapeutic gemcitabine. Overall, it is a unique protocol for tracking and transporting chemotherapeutic agents to tumor areas without the guidance of tumor-directive ligands.
A number of infectious agents have been classified as human carcinogens. The purpose of the current study was to provide an evidence-based assessment of the burden of infection-related cancers in the ...Korean population.
The population attributable fraction was calculated using infection prevalence data from 1990 or earlier, relative risk estimates from meta-analyses using mainly Korean studies and national data on cancer incidence and mortality for the year 2007.
The fractions of all cancers attributable to infection were 25.1% and 16.8% for cancer incidence in men and women, and 25.8% and 22.7% of cancer mortality in men and women, respectively. Among infection-related cancers, Helicobacter pylori was responsible for 56.5% of cases and 45.1% of deaths, followed by hepatitis B virus (HBV) (23.9% of cases and 37.5% of deaths) and human papillomavirus (HPV) (11.3% of cases and 6% of deaths) and then by hepatitis C virus (HCV) (6% of cases and 9% of deaths). Over 97% of infection-related cancers were attributable to infection with H. pylori, HBV, HCV and HPV.
Up to one-quarter of cancer cases and deaths would be preventable through appropriate control of infectious agents in Korea.

Through-silicon via (TSV) has been used for 3-dimentional integrated circuits. Mechanical stresses in Cu and Si around the TSV were measured using synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction. ...The hydrostatic stress in Cu TSV went from high tensile of 234MPa in the as-fabricated state, to −196MPa (compressive) during thermal annealing (in situ measurement), to 167MPa in the post-annealed state. Due to this stress, the keep-away distance in Si was determined to be about 17μm. Our results suggest that Cu stress may lead to reliability as well as integration issues, while Si stress may lead to device performance concerns.

The Advanced Mo-based Rare process Experiment (AMoRE)-Pilot experiment is an initial phase of the AMoRE search for neutrinoless double beta decay of
100
Mo, with the purpose of investigating the ...level and sources of backgrounds. Searches for neutrinoless double beta decay generally require ultimately low backgrounds. Surface
α
decays on the crystals themselves or nearby materials can deposit a continuum of energies that can be as high as the
Q
-value of the decay itself and may fall in the region of interest (ROI). To understand these background events, we studied backgrounds from radioactive contaminations internal to and on the surface of the crystals or nearby materials with Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulations. In this study, we report on the measured
α
energy spectra fitted with the corresponding simulated spectra for six crystal detectors, where sources of background contributions could be identified through high energy
α
peaks and continuum parts in the energy spectrum for both internal and surface contaminations. We determine the low-energy contributions from internal and surface
α
contaminations by extrapolating from the
α
background fitting model.

Preterm newborns are more likely to suffer from infectious diseases at birth compared to children delivered at term. Whether this is due to compromised cellular, humoral, or organ-specific ...development remains unclear. To begin to define whether maternal-fetal antibody transfer profiles differ across preterm (PT) and fullterm (FT) infants, the overall quantity and functional quality of an array of 24 vaccine-, endemic pathogen-, and common antigen-specific antibodies were assessed across a cohort of 11 PT and 12 term-delivered maternal:infant pairs from birth through week 12. While total IgG levels to influenza, pneumo, measles, rubella, EBV, and RSV were higher in FT newborns, selective Fc-receptor binding antibodies was noted in PT newborns. In fact, near equivalent antibody-effector functions were observed across PT and FT infants, despite significant quantitative differences in transferred antibody levels. Moreover, temporal transfer analysis revealed the selective early transfer of FcRn, FcγR2, and FcγR3 binding antibodies, pointing to differential placental sieving mechanisms across gestation. These data point to selectivity in placental transfer at distinct gestational ages, to ensure that children are endowed with the most robust humoral immunity even if born preterm.

We present a comprehensive study of the nonproportionality of NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors within the context of dark matter search experiments. Our investigation, which integrates COSINE-100 data ...with supplementary
γ
spectroscopy, measures light yields across diverse energy levels from full-energy
γ
peaks produced by the decays of various isotopes. These
γ
peaks of interest were produced by decays supported by both long and short-lived isotopes. Analyzing peaks from decays supported only by short-lived isotopes presented a unique challenge due to their limited statistics and overlapping energies, which was overcome by long-term data collection and a time-dependent analysis. A key achievement is the direct measurement of the 0.87 keV light yield, resulting from the cascade following electron capture decay of
22
Na
from internal contamination. This measurement, previously accessible only indirectly, deepens our understanding of NaI(Tl) scintillator behavior in the region of interest for dark matter searches. This study holds substantial implications for background modeling and the interpretation of dark matter signals in NaI(Tl) experiments.

Abstract
Records on the distribution of
Rickettsia
spp. in their natural hosts in Central Asia are incomplete. Rodents and small mammals are potential natural reservoirs for
Rickettsiae
in their ...natural lifecycle. Studies about the maintenance of
Rickettsia
in wild animals are available for Western nations, but—to our knowledge—no studies and data are available in the Republic of Kazakhstan so far. The first case description of Rickettsioses in Kazakhstan was made in the 1950ies in the Almaty region and now Kyzylorda, East Kazakhstan, Pavlodar and North Kazakhstan are endemic areas. The existence of murine and endemic typhus was proven in arthropod vectors in the regions Kyzylorda and Almaty. Here we show for the first time investigations on tick-borne
Rickettsia
species detected by a pan-rickettsial citrate synthase gene (
gltA
) real-time PCR in ear lobes of small mammals (n = 624) in Kazakhstan. From all analysed small mammals 2.72% were positive for
Rickettsia raoultii, R. slovaca
or
R. conorii.
Sequencing of the rickettsial gene
OmpAIV
and the
23S–5S
interspacer region revealed a similar heritage of identified
Rickettsia
species that was observed in ticks in previous studies from the region. In summary, this study proves that rodents in Kazakhstan serve as a natural reservoir of
Rickettsia
spp.
