Ovarian cancer is common in women from developed countries. We designed a prospective randomized controlled trial of ovarian cancer screening to establish an improved strategy for the early detection ...of cancers. Asymptomatic postmenopausal women were randomly assigned between 1985 and 1999 to either an intervention group (n = 41,688) or a control group (n = 40,799) in a ratio of 1:1, with follow-up of mean 9.2 years, in Shizuoka district, Japan. The original intention was to offer women in the intervention group annual screens by gynecological examination (sequential pelvic ultrasound US and serum CA125 test). Women with abnormal US findings and/or raised CA125 values were referred for surgical investigation by a gynecological oncologist. In December 2002, the code was broken and the Shizuoka Cohort Study of Ovarian Cancer Screening and Shizuoka Cancer Registry were searched to determine both malignant and nonmalignant diagnoses. Twenty-seven cancers were detected in the 41,688-screened women. Eight more cancers were diagnosed outside the screening program. Detection rates of ovarian cancer were 0.31 per 1000 at the prevalent screen and 0.38-0.74 per 1000 at subsequent screens; they increased with successive screening rounds. Among the 40,779 control women, 32 women developed ovarian cancer. The proportion of stage I ovarian cancer was higher in the screened group (63%) than in the control group (38%), which did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.2285). This is to our knowledge the first prospective randomized report of the ovarian cancer screening. The rise in the detection of early-stage ovarian cancer in asymptomatic postmenopausal women is not significant, but future decisions on screening policy should be informed by further follow-up from this trial.
We have performed in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of cesium(Cs)-deposited FeSe thin films on SrTiO3. We found that Cs deposition enables heavily electron doping into ...the FeSe layer. In properly doped films, we also revealed the occurrence of superconductivity accompanied by the suppression of electronic nematicity. The present result demonstrates that Cs deposition is an effective way to realize and enhance superconductivity in FeSe.
The Aeolian Dust Experiment on Climate Impact (ADEC) was initiated in April 2000 as a joint five-year Japan–China project. The goal was to understand the impact of aeolian dust on climate via ...radiative forcing (RF). Field experiments and numerical simulations were conducted from the source regions in northwestern China to the downwind region in Japan in order to understand wind erosion processes temporal and spatial distribution of dust during their long-range transportation chemical, physical, and optical properties of dust and the direct effect of radiative forcing due to dust. For this, three intensive observation periods (IOP) were conducted from April 2002 to April 2004.
The in situ and network observation results are summarized as follows: (1) In situ observations of the wind erosion process revealed that the vertical profile of moving sand has a clear size dependency with height and saltation flux and that threshold wind velocity is dependent on soil moisture. Results also demonstrated that saltation flux is strongly dependent on the parent soil size distribution of the desert surface. (2) Both lidar observations and model simulations revealed a multiple dust layer in East Asia. A numerical simulation of a chemical transport model, CFORS, illustrated the elevated dust layer from the Taklimakan Desert and the lower dust layer from the Gobi Desert. The global-scale dust model, MASINGAR, also simulated the dust layer in the middle to upper free troposphere in East Asia, which originated from North Africa and the Middle East during a dust storm in March 2003. Raman lidar observations at Tsukuba, Japan, found the ice cloud associated with the dust layer at an altitude of 6 to 9 km. Analysis from lidar and the radio-sonde observation suggested that the Asian dust acted as ice nuclei at the ice-saturated region. These results suggest the importance of dust's climate impact via the indirect effect of radiative forcing due to the activation of dust into ice nuclei. (3) Studies on the aerosol concentration indicated that size distributions of aerosols in downwind regions have bimodal peaks. One peak was in the submicron range and the other in the supermicron range. The main soluble components of the supermicron peak were Na
+, Ca
2+, NO
3
−, and Cl
−. In the downwind region in Japan, the dust, sea salt, and a mixture of the two were found to be dominant in coarse particles in the mixed boundary layer. (4) Observation of the optical properties of dust by sky-radiometer, particle shoot absorption photometer (PSAP), and Nephelometer indicated that unpolluted dust at source region has a weaker absorption than originally believed.
A sensitivity experiment of direct RF by dust indicated that single scattering albedo is the most important of the optical properties of dust and that the sensitivity of instantaneous RF in the shortwave region at the top of the atmosphere to the refractive index strongly depends on surface albedo. A global scale dust model, MASINGAR, was used for evaluation of direct RF due to dust. The results indicated the global mean RF at the top and the bottom of the atmosphere were −

with cloud and were almost half of the RF with cloud-free condition.

We have performed an in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of undoped one-monolayer (1-ML) FeSe film on SrTiO3 to elucidate the nature of the parent phase of high-temperature ...superconductivity. Accurate tuning of carrier concentration at zero doping by low-temperature postgrowth annealing of the film enabled us to observe a linearly dispersive Dirac-cone band and a pointlike Fermi surface on the ΓM mirror reflection plane arising from the nematic order. Intriguingly, the low-energy excitations of this material are solely characterized by the Dirac-cone band, since no other bands cross the Fermi level unlike its multilayer counterpart. The present result strongly suggests that undoped 1-ML FeSe is a two-dimensional Dirac semimetal with a mirror-symmetry-protected Dirac-cone band.

Macroscopic and microscopic dissipative structural patterns are formed in the course of drying an aqueous solution of n-dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride on a cover glass. Broad ring patterns of the ...hill accumulate with detergent molecules to form around the outside edges of the film solution in the macroscopic scale. The drying time (T) and the pattern area (S) decrease and increase respectively, as the detergent concentration increases. T decreases significantly as the ethanol fraction increases in the aqueous ethanol mixtures, whereas S increases as the fraction increases. Both T and S decrease as the concentrations of KCl, CaCl^sub 2^ or LaCl^sub 3^ increase. Cross-, branch-, and arc-like microscopic patterns are observed in the separated block regions. The convection of water and detergents at different rates under gravity and the translational and rotational Brownian movement of the latter are important for macroscopic pattern formation. Microscopic patterns are determined by the translational Brownian diffusion of the detergent molecules and the electrostatic and the hydrophobic interactions between the detergents and/or between the detergent and cell wall in the course of the solidification.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

In clinical trials, eyes transplanted with cultured oral mucosal epithelial cell sheets have shown increased neovascularisation compared with eyes treated with cultured corneal epithelial cell ...sheets. As reported recently, soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (soluble VEGFr-1) is a main factor to maintain a corneal avascularity.
To investigate soluble VEGFr-1 of cultured corneal epithelial cells (CCE) and cultured oral mucosal epithelial cells (COE) in vitro.
Rabbit corneal and oral mucosal epithelial cells were co-cultured with mitomycin C-treated NIH/3T3 cells on culture plates. After CCE and COE were multilayered, culture medium was replaced by basal medium and incubated. Protein secretion of soluble VEGFr-1 was assessed in conditioned medium from CCE and COE by ELISA. Angiogenic potential was examined by invasion, migration assays with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in addition to recombinant soluble VEGFr-1.
CCE secreted a significantly higher amount of soluble VEGFr-1 than did COE. Recombinant soluble VEGFr-1 significantly suppressed HUVEC migration induced by COE, without suppression in CCE. In conclusion, these findings suggest that low protein levels of soluble VEGFr-1 may lead to corneal neovascularisation after COE sheet transplantation.
Background & Aims: The c-
kit gene encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase (KIT). Recently, we found gain-of-function mutations of the c-
kit gene in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). All mutations ...were confined within the 11 amino acids (Lys-550 to Val-560) in the juxtamembrane domain, but one GIST showed a novel deletion-type mutation at codon 579 (Asp) in the juxtamembrane domain. The aim of this study was to clarify whether the mutation is activating.
Methods: Mutant c-
kit cDNA was transfected into an interleukin 3 (IL-3)-dependent Ba/F3 murine lymphoid cell line, and the magnitude of autophosphorylation of the mutant KIT was examined with or without stem cell factor (SCF), a ligand of KIT. An in vitro kinase assay was also performed. The biological behavior of the transfectant was estimated by both an in vitro proliferation assay and in vivo transplantation to nude mice.
Results: The mutant KIT exhibited constitutive phosphorylation and strong kinase activity without SCF. The transfectant grew autonomously without IL-3 and SCF, and it formed tumors in nude mice.
Conclusions: Deletion at codon 579 (Asp) in the juxtamembrane domain of the c-
kit gene is a novel gain-of-function mutation other than the region between Lys-550 and Val-560.

The labeling of foods containing material derived from crustaceans such as shrimp and crab is to become mandatory in Japan because of increases in the number of allergy patients. To ensure proper ...labeling, 2 novel sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits for the determination of crustacean protein in processed foods, the N kit (Nissui Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd, Ibaraki, Japan) and the M kit (Maruha Nichiro Holdings, Inc., Ibaraki, Japan), have been developed. Five types of model processed foods containing 10 and/or 11.9 microg/g crustacean soluble protein were prepared for interlaboratory evaluation of the performance of these kits. The N kit displayed a relatively high level of reproducibility relative standard deviation (interlaboratory precision; 4.0-8.4% RSDR) and sufficient recovery (65-86%) for all the model processed foods. The M kit displayed sufficient reproducibility (17.6-20.5% RSDR) and a reasonably high level of recovery (82-103%). The repeatability relative standard deviation (RSDr) values regarding the detection of crustacean proteins in the 5 model foods were mostly < 5.1% RSDr for the N kit and 9.9% RSDr for the M kit. In conclusion, the results of this interlaboratory evaluation suggest that both these ELISA kits would be very useful for detecting crustacean protein in processed foods.
