The KamLAND-Zen experiment has provided stringent constraints on the neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay half-life in ^{136}Xe using a xenon-loaded liquid scintillator. We report an improved search ...using an upgraded detector with almost double the amount of xenon and an ultralow radioactivity container, corresponding to an exposure of 970 kg yr of ^{136}Xe. These new data provide valuable insight into backgrounds, especially from cosmic muon spallation of xenon, and have required the use of novel background rejection techniques. We obtain a lower limit for the 0νββ decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}>2.3×10^{26} yr at 90% C.L., corresponding to upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 36-156 meV using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations.

BACKGROUND: There is broad human exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), an estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemical widely used for the production of plastic products. BPA is reported to affect ...preimplantation embryos or fetuses and alter their postnatal development at doses typically found in the environment. We measured contamination of BPA in various kinds of human biological fluids by a novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. METHODS: Blood samples were obtained from healthy premenopausal women, women with early and full-term pregnancy, and umbilical cord at full-term delivery. Ovarian follicular fluids obtained during IVF procedures and amniotic fluids obtained at mid-term and full-term pregnancy were also subject to BPA measurements. RESULTS: BPA was present in serum and follicular fluid at ∼1–2 ng/ml, as well as in fetal serum and full-term amniotic fluid, confirming passage through the placenta. Surprisingly, an ∼5-fold higher concentration, 8.3 ± 8.7 ng/ml, was revealed in amniotic fluid at 15–18 weeks gestation, compared with other fluids. CONCLUSION: These results suggest accumulation of BPA in early fetuses and significant exposure during the prenatal period, which must be considered in evaluating the potential for human exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

Development of radio-purification for the large-volume
liquid scintillator detector is a key to enhance search
sensitivities in neutrino physics. In this paper, we describe
laboratory ...studies on the radio-purification of the liquid
scintillator detector by using the metal scavenger, aiming at the
improved search for the neutrinoless double beta decay in
KamLAND-Zen. In the purification tests, the

Pb reduction
efficiency was evaluated. Based on the purification performance in
small-scale system, we designed a large adsorption column for the
metal scavenging applicable to the KamLAND purification system. We
produced the column and constructed a purification test bench, and
confirmed the
212
Pb reduction efficiency, the process speed,
the LS contamination and quality changes, and the stability of
chemical components in the Xe-LS. We found that the metal scavenging
is a practical method for the large-volume LS purification, and will
be effective to reduce metallic radioactive elements.
To evaluate the usefulness of synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed before the initiation of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in predicting whether breast cancers can achieve a ...pathological complete response (pCR) after the completion of NAC.
This retrospective study investigated 37 consecutive patients with 39 breast cancers (pCR: 14, and non-pCR: 25) who underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-MRI and synthetic MRI before the initiation of NAC. Using synthetic MRI images, quantitative values (T1 and T2 relaxation times, proton density PD and their standard deviations SD) were obtained in breast lesions, before (Pre-T1, Pre-T2, Pre-PD, SD of Pre-T1, SD of Pre-T2, SD of Pre-PD) and after (Gd-T1, Gd-T2, Gd-PD, SD of Gd-T1, SD of Gd-T2, SD of Gd-PD) contrast agent injection. The aforementioned quantitative values and several morphological features that were identified on DCE-MRI were compared between pCR and non-pCR.
Multivariate analyses revealed that the SD of Pre-T2 (p=0.038) was significant and was an independent predictor of pCR, with an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of 0.829. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the SD of Pre-T2 with an optimal cut-off value of 11.5 were 71.4%, 80%, and 76.3%, respectively.
The SD of Pre-T2 obtained from synthetic MRI was used successfully to predict those breast cancers that would achieve a pCR after the completion of NAC; however, these results are preliminary and need to be verified by further studies.
•Accurately predicting tumour response to NAC in breast cancer is crucial.•Synthetic MRI can obtain some quantitative values during a single scan.•SD of T2-Pre of breast cancer was successfully used to predict pCR prior to NAC.

We report two microlensing planet candidates discovered by the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) survey in 2017. However, both events have the 2L1S/1L2S degeneracy, which is an obstacle ...to claiming the discovery of the planets with certainty unless the degeneracy can be resolved. For KMT-2017-BLG-0962, the degeneracy cannot be resolved. If the 2L1S solution is correct, KMT-2017-BLG-0962 might be produced by a super Jupiter-mass planet orbiting a mid-M-dwarf host star. For KMT-2017-BLG-1119, the light-curve modeling favors the 2L1S solution but higher-resolution observations of the baseline object tend to support the 1L2S interpretation rather than the planetary interpretation. This degeneracy might be resolved by a future measurement of the lens-source relative proper motion. This study shows that the problem of resolving 2L1S/1L2S degeneracy exists over a much wider range of conditions than those considered by the theoretical study of Gaudi (1998).
To evaluate the utility of synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast in predicting the Ki-67 status in patients with oestrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer.
Forty-nine patients ...with 50 histopathologically proven breast cancers who underwent additional synthetic MRI were enrolled in the present study. Using synthetic MRI images, T1 and T2 relaxation times and their standard deviations (SD) in the breast lesions before (T1-Pre, T2-Pre, PD-Pre, SD of T1-Pre, SD of T2-Pre, SD of PD-Pre) and after (T1-Gd, T2-Gd, PD-Gd, SD of T1-Gd, SD of T2-Gd, SD of PD-Gd) contrast agent injection were obtained. These quantitative values were compared between the low Ki-67 expression (<14%) lesions (low-proliferation group: n=23) and high Ki-67 expression (≥14%) lesions (high-proliferation group: n=27).
The univariate analysis showed that the SD of T1-Gd (p<0.001) and T2-Gd (p=0.042) were significantly higher in the high-proliferation group than in the low-proliferation group. Multivariate analysis further showed that the SD of T1-Gd was a significant and independent predictor of Ki-67 expression, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve of 0.885. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the SD of T1-Gd with an optimal cut-off value of 98.5 were 77.8%, 87%, and 82%, respectively.
The SD of T1-Gd obtained from synthetic MRI was useful to predict Ki-67 status.

We report the discovery of a gas-giant planet orbiting a low-mass host star in the microlensing event MOA-bin-29 that occurred in 2006. We find five degenerate solutions with the planet/host-star ...mass ratio of q ∼ 10−2. The Einstein radius crossing time of all models are relatively short (∼4-7 days), which indicates that the mass of host star is likely low. The measured lens-source proper motion is 5-9 mas yr−1 depending on the models. Since only finite source effects are detected, we conduct a Bayesian analysis in order to obtain the posterior probability distribution of the lens physical properties. As a result, we find the lens system is likely to be a gas-giant orbiting a brown dwarf or a very late M-dwarf in the Galactic bulge. The probability distributions of the physical parameters for the five degenerate models are consistent within the range of error. By combining these probability distributions, we conclude that the lens system is a gas giant with a mass of orbiting a brown dwarf with a mass of at a projected star-planet separation of . The lens distance is , i.e., likely within the Galactic bulge.
The decay of the primordial isotopes 238U, 235U, 232Th, and 40K has contributed to the terrestrial heat budget throughout the Earth's history. Hence, the individual abundance of those isotopes are ...key parameters in reconstructing contemporary Earth models. The geoneutrinos produced by the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium have been observed with the Kamioka Liquid‐Scintillator Antineutrino Detector (KamLAND). Those measurements have been improved with more than 18‐year observation time, and improvement in detector background levels mainly with an 8‐year nearly reactor‐free period, which now permit spectroscopy with geoneutrinos. Our results yield the first constraint on both uranium and thorium heat contributions. The KamLAND result is consistent with geochemical estimations based on elemental abundances of chondritic meteorites and mantle peridotites. The High‐Q model is disfavored at 99.76% C.L. and a fully radiogenic model is excluded at 5.2σ assuming a homogeneous heat producing element distribution in the mantle.
Plain Language Summary
The energy to drive the Earth's engine comes from two different sources: primordial and radiogenic. Primordial energy comes from the added heat by collisions of accreting material and less so by the energy accompanying the sinking of metal to form the core. The radioactive decays of heat producing elements (i.e., potassium, thorium, and uranium) also generate energy and some of these decaying elements produce antineutrinos (geoneutrinos). Geoneutrino measurements provide the Earth's fuel gauge for its radiogenic power supply and insights into the planet's cooling history. The measurement accuracy of the KamLAND experiment has been improved by an 18‐year long‐term observation and a reduction of the significant background generated by commercial reactors. Consequently, modern geoneutrino measurements have entered an era of distinct spectroscopic contributions coming from uranium and thorium. The KamLAND result is consistent with compositional models for the bulk silicate Earth (the crust plus the mantle) predicting low to medium radiogenic heat (10–20 TW (1012 W)) and disfavor high concentration models (30 TW). This constraint sets the best limit on the permissible radiogenic energy budget in the Earth. Geoneutrino observations now begin to make significant contributions to the understanding of fundamental driving forces powering the Earth dynamic behavior.
