The final results of the EDELWEISS-I dark matter search using cryogenic heat-and-ionization Ge detectors are presented. The final data sample corresponds to an increase by a factor five in exposure ...relative to the previously published results. A recoil energy threshold of 13 keV or better was achieved with three 320g detectors working simultaneously over four months of stable operation. Limits on the spin-independent cross-section for the scattering of a WIMP on a nucleon are derived from an accumulated fiducial exposure of 62 kg.d.

We report photoemission experiments revealing the valence electron spectral function of Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni atoms on the Ag (100) surface. The series of spectra shows splittings of higher energy ...features which decrease with the filling of the 3d shell and a highly nonmonotonic evolution of spectral weight near the Fermi edge. First principles calculations demonstrate that two manifestations of Hund's exchange J are responsible for this evolution. First, there is a monotonic reduction of the effective exchange splittings with increasing filling of the 3d shell. Second, the amount of charge fluctuations and, thus, the weight of quasiparticle peaks at the Fermi level varies nonmonotonically through this 3d series due to a distinct occupancy dependence of effective charging energies U(eff).

We report photoemission experiments revealing the full valence electron spectral function of Ce adatoms on Ag(111), W(110), and Rh(111) surfaces. A transfer of Ce 4f spectral weight from the ...ionization peak towards the Fermi level is demonstrated upon changing the substrate from Ag(111) to Rh(111). In the intermediate case of Ce on W(110) the ionization peak is found to be split. This evolution of the spectra is explained by means of first-principles theory, which clearly demonstrates that a reliable understanding of magnetic adatoms on metal surfaces requires simultaneous low and high energy spectroscopic information.

In the spectral density of Cr(001) surfaces, a sharp resonance close to the Fermi level is observed in both experiment and theory. For the physical origin of this peak, two mechanisms were proposed: ...a single-particle dz2 surface state renormalized by electron-phonon coupling and an orbital Kondo effect due to the degenerate dxz/dyz states. Despite several experimental and theoretical investigations, the origin is still under debate. In this work, we address this problem by two different approaches of the dynamical mean-field theory: first, by the spin-polarized T-matrix fluctuation exchange approximation suitable for weakly and moderately correlated systems; second, by the noncrossing approximation derived in the limit of weak hybridization (i.e., for strongly correlated systems) capturing Kondo-type processes. By using recent continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo calculations as a benchmark, we find that the high-energy features, everything except the resonance, of the spectrum are captured within the spin-polarized T-matrix fluctuation exchange approximation. More precisely, the particle-particle processes provide the main contribution. For the noncrossing approximation, it appears that spin-polarized calculations suffer from spurious behavior at the Fermi level. Then, we turned to non-spin-polarized calculations to avoid this unphysical behavior. By employing two plausible starting hybridization functions, it is observed that the characteristics of the resonance are crucially dependent on the starting point. It appears that only one of these starting hybridizations could result in an orbital Kondo resonance in the presence of a strong magnetic field like in the Cr(001) surface. It is for a future investigation to first resolve the unphysical behavior within the spin-polarized noncrossing approximation and then check for an orbital Kondo resonance.

The electronic structure of the Cr(001) surface with its sharp resonance at the Fermi level is a subject of controversial debate of many experimental and theoretical works. To date, it is unclear ...whether the origin of this resonance is an orbital Kondo or an electron-phonon coupling effect. We have combined ab initio density functional calculations with dynamical mean-field simulations to calculate the orbitally resolved spectral function of the Cr(001) surface. The calculated orbital character and shape of the spectrum is in agreement with data from (inverse) photoemission experiments. We find that dynamic electron correlations crucially influence the surface electronic structure and lead to a low energy resonance in the dz2 and dxz/yz orbitals. Our results help to reconvene controversial experimental results from (I)PES and STM measurements.

The ANTARES Neutrino Telescope was completed in May 2008 and is the first operational Neutrino Telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. The main purpose of the detector is to perform neutrino astronomy ...and the apparatus also offers facilities for marine and Earth sciences. This paper describes the design, the construction and the installation of the telescope in the deep sea, offshore from Toulon in France. An illustration of the detector performance is given.

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at the GANIL facility, Caen-France. This set-up exploits the stable and radioactive heavy-ions beams delivered by the cyclotron ...accelerator complex of GANIL. Additionally, it benefits from a large palette of ancillary detectors and spectrometers to address in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The set-up has been designed to couple AGATA with a magnetic spectrometer, charged-particle and neutron detectors, scintillators for the detection of high-energy γ rays and other devices such as a plunger to measure nuclear lifetimes. In this paper, the design and the mechanical characteristics of the set-up are described. Based on simulations, expected performances of the AGATA 1π array are presented.
